An enjoyable podcast. I could relate to many of the talking points. Though a few remarks compelled me to respond. First, the Nazi regime did not produce great art, it looted great art. The Führer kept the artwork he liked and destroyed what he deemed inferior. Secondly, In regard to the career paths of gifted children: Meritocracy gives way to rhetoric in capitalistic societies, which obliterates the intrinsic value of creative works, in favour of extrinsic market demands (NFTs are the most obscene example). Gifted children come to believe the quality of their work will determine their future success. They are ill equipped to navigate highly exploitive environments. Lastly, the glass is a prime example of why artists in our society are devalued. The average person is unaware they are immersed in ubiquitous aesthetic. Each product they buy is designed to express their individuality and their status within a tribe. Every aspect of their presence is defined by: the car they drive, the house they own, the furniture they choose, the clothes they wear, the stories (books, films, games, etc) they mirror, the recipes they make, the music they listen to, the city landscapes they inhabit and many many other objects like that unassuming glass - are created by artists - to foster our wellbeing. If you wonder what life would be like without their creative talents - live in a prison for awhile (though even in prison inmates adorn themselves with tattoos).

My child was identified by testing in pre-school as "highly gifted" and we allowed her placement in a "highly gifted" program in elementary school which had many benefits--small class size, specialized curricula, French classes, etc. but, in hindsight, I regret our choice for several reasons--she had to be bussed out of our neighborhood and found it more difficult to develop friendships close to home; she reported to me much later that, throughout her elementary school years, she didn't know she was smart because compared to some of the other kids in her class (one was taking college-level mathematics in elementary school), she felt "stupid." I regret our decision to place her in a special program.

Talking about my life… To the point of no recognition of nor the interest , only disappointment, and by rule , a kid without direction especially from those that supposedly raised me, does have the distinction to go astray because being rejected as a way of life does have a tendency to make trouble in ways that are cliche in practice, and communicated in expressive ways which turned out in some measure of success depending upon the effort spent. Healing from self harm is … So if your kid has talent in visual arts , let them create, if they receive joy from it let them create. Don’t stifle it through your ignorance of what it is to be that state for hours, and only get them fed with nutritious genuine foods. Some exercise, and allow their path as it shows itself to the child. Certainly beware of problems that they haven’t any life experience with , and learn for yourself to some knowledge that’ll assist your understanding of their abilities and nuances of perception and personality. This woman knows her stuff. Don’t let it die out just because you have a different notion of success of your child. In some ways it could have a catastrophic outcome in their life.

Surely there is a difference between talented and gifted? I'm thinking this based following comments about magic. Also, Does getting in a flow state relate to being gifted at something? The one track giftedness seems similar to people on the other end of the extremes - the knowledge that people who have learning difficulties tend to have a spiky IQ and can score highly in certain areas but this might not translate into an actual outcome?

In reference to Empathy and art I do think if you read allot of novels this will likely increase it. I think art is more linked to emotions as opposed to empathy.

The glass by itself is a design therefore connected to art, it's never not art.
