This is literally the best video of its kind that I've seen. It managed to be very comprehensive without losing its audience because of the jargon.

When I first started sculpting, my major focus was on the breasts and the hips. Little did I know I'd end up focusing on the face and hands. amazing hands and faces make the sexiest of characters!

Thank you so much for this informative video and your insights about the field! I'd love to become a real-time game character artist but often feel like I'm too slow with learning everything bc it takes me so much time to learn all the skills and it gets quickly too overwhelming which often stress me out :') So far I've used MD and 3dsmax the most, then Substance Painter and briefly learned a bit of zbrush and Unreal engine; Atm I'm only focusing on my clothing skills in MD and after that I'll either move on to improve Modeling skills in Max or properly learn sculpting in zbrush and hopefully get there one day! xD I'd love to see any tuts related to real-time game charac art, like maybe how to optimize and retopo clothes from MD for Unreal engine or so on!^^

Thank you very much for watching and your comment! I'm glad it was helpful. I can relate to every word. It can be overwhelming indeed. Keep in mind that you do not have to know it all. I for instance belong to the old-school CG Artists line-up who has started out long before RU-vid was a thing, back then when tutorials or courses where scarce. So I used to print out and read the entire handbook of each software I was about to learn. It worked very well back than, but today, it would be a total waste of time. Knowing it all is a habit that is very difficult to get rid of. Once you realize that perfection means to get things done and not to make everything perfect, life becomes a little bit easier. Unfortunately I haven't perfected that yet 😅. I would focus on one great portfolio piece in your case. Search for a top-notch artwork and use this as your quality benchmark. Then try to find a way to get close to this by channeling your efforts. Take ZBrush for instance. You probably need to learn only 10% of the available tools and functions to create a great 3D model. Same goes for many other programs.

@@3DGladiator Thanks a lot for your helpful advice! Yes, I totally agree with the knowing it all habit. And also with trying making everything perfect is just not possible. I especially realized that when comparing my own work with characters from the industry like Ellie of TLOU2, where multiple skilled artists work on the same character, it'll be never perfect doing the one man show xD Looking at my old work of a 3d not-game-ready character there were just soo many problems I had and skills and knowledge that were missing (I'm a 3d student atm in a uni). So that's why I've decided to work on clothing first (bc it's the easiest topic for me) and after that I'll focus on making a good character face so that at the end I'd make 1 clean game-character as a project after gaining more knowledge! ^^

Thanks for the presentation and tips 3D Gladiator, speaking of ZBrush and training how goes your "Master Human Figure Sculpting!" videos?
@3DGladiator
@3DGladiator 3 года назад
You're welcome Robert, thanks for watching! I have decided to put the project on hold for several reasons. According my numbers, I was already niching down too much, which means that there is no real market for such a highly specialist course, especially when it's only about sculpting. The idea emerged from my love and passion for anatomy. This type of knowledge is still very valuable of course, but things have changed quite a bit on the production site. Looking at the current technical development, there will soon be no need to create humanoid characters from scratch anymore.

@@3DGladiator Hi 3D Gladiator, true things like scanning, character creator etc may facilitate the creation of character models for games and films but there is still a love for the fine art of sculpting in the art community. I understand your shift in focus though as this is a business. That being said are you not concerned that real world mechanical objects will either just be scanned or the 3D cad files provided by the source companies from their own engineering files and than downsized for game/film use will become the norm if it is not already? Ex. Ford providing Mustang blueprints etc.? Love your work though and your joy of teaching, take care and have a great week. Cheers.

Thank u for sharing this with us! I wanted to ask u, i am a design student in Rome and i did mostly product design, so i kinda have a little knowledge of 3D modeling but i also like drawing, in your opinion can i mix 2D and 3D and become a concept design for videogames?
@SADYT-be5qe
@SADYT-be5qe 3 года назад
This might sound a lil confusing but what i am asking is: can i be a 2D concept designer (like Feng Zu says) and a 3D character artist?
@3DGladiator
@3DGladiator 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and your question. Absolutely! In this case, keep in mind that the strict lines between 2D and 3D diminish more and more these days. As a 2D concept designer, 3D applications can play a big role in your daily workflow. As a 3D character artist, 2D skills are super important too - and I'm not only talking about texture painting. If you cannot only design a character but also actually build it, you will be a very valuable employee for every studio. I just came across this video today: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q6pq1DKV-oI.html This is what I consider as 2D concept art nowadays. Hope this answers your question. Best, Ben

Yes, CAD. The term is a little bit misleading in this context, because what we do in the entertainment industry can also be described as "computer aided design". By CAD I mean everything related to the production industry where 3D is used as tool for production.

Thanks for your comment and for leaving a like. There are still thousands of people trying to get their foot in the door. Most of them haven't done their homework by any means and are applying with half baked work and weak portfolios. I don't want to sound offensive here, but you wouldn't believe what people think is good enough to get a job. Despite expensive college degrees and fancy titles, you can tell from 2 miles away that they spend only a few hours per week improving their skills. On the other hand, the bar is rising every year and it's hard to keep up and meet the requirements even if you go all in. I wish you all the best and good luck! Best, Ben
