What Does It Take to Make an Icon (When Everyone is an Artist)?

In the future will only 15 people become famous? Artists and designers have made some of our most enduring iconic images- from Rodin's Thinker to Carolyn Davidson's graphic Nike "swoosh." Today in age of Kimye, how unlikely is it to make an iconic image? How does a work of art get traction? Are Jeff Koons' flower Puppy or Kara Walker's Sphinx in sugar new icons, or do they pass by us like floats in a parade? Who generates enduring images, and how are they distributed or displayed today. Marilyn Minter whose art explores taste and vulgarity, Jerry Saltz, New York Magazine art critic with over 100,000 face book followers, and Thelma Golden, Director of the Studio Museum and icon herself will discuss.

Not a single word on how in the modern world, icons are now predominately made through marketing and advertising.

Jerry Saltz is an absolute scream, when he really gets going on full form he reminds me a lot of a mix between the very best of George Carlin and Woody Alllen :))

I'm blown away by all the meaningless people (icons) they are exalting. Warhol was right, he perfectly identified the "empty plate culture" we inhabit and the lack of inspiration offered by these types (the panel) for an alternative to a desperate and depressed population. SO SAD -

I wanted to listen, but as soon as she mentioned Lady Gaga, I had to stop this video. Though I like Jeffrey and his distaste for Jeff Koons

Listening to artists talk is excruciatingly dull. The art critics... not so.
