Looking at the salary cap situation for Vegas, Colorado and Tampa it's pretty clear how a team should be built to win. Less greed, more winning mentality. Why does the Toronto management think they can reinvent the wheel and have 4 players on 10 million+ and with that be competetive?

I do disagree a bit with what Hayes says, that they could have gotten him for cheaper if they signed early etc… I mean yeah it’s true, but that’s all in hindsight. If Willy played worse this year his contract would have been less. Similarly, just because they give him 10 and say “show us how much you wanna stay” or whatever, Willy could just not take the deal, play until his contract goes out and take the chance to increase his value based on his play. So in the end it probably would have been the same or a similar number for Willy, no matter what the Leafs did as long as they didn’t want to let him go

"Pay me first, then I'll deliver." Something wrong with that logic. Leafs have done nothing in the playoffs yet and basically have liked what they've seen enough to pay Nylander that kind of money. Nylander is a good player having a career season, but 11.5? Way too high. They should have seen what they could have gotten for trade value, two strong power forwards and a D or a goalie. Nylander is great offensively, but a very poor two-way player. That's not worth 11.5 and doesn't help solve the Leafs playoff problems.

Nylander is the one among them who has consistently risen to the occasion in the playoffs so this pre-emptive panic is weird. Also yes he is a wealthy man but keep things in perspective, NHL salaries are low in the world of pro sports. His salary would make him a bench player on the Raptors.

You have flashy stars, okay, well the rest of your roster is filled with call-ups or contract minimum. Let's talk about Ottawa spending the same as the Leafs and missing the playoffs again. They're EQUAL! There's no, "Can't believe the Leafs still haven't won a cup with Matthews." There's maybe 28 teams playing with a full cap and only one can win the cup. This isn't 1990-whatever where you can buy championships like Detroit. There's only two advantages you can leverage in this league to give you an advantage: 1) You drafted superstars and are not paying for their full contract yet....and 2) You live in a market that doesn't care that much about hockey, the media is kind, and you have zero pressure to win (Colorado, Tampa, St. Louis, etc).

Absolutely braindead take on the salary cap, the salary cap is the reason why there's so much parity in the league. Toronto shouldn't be able to pay these exuberant contracts just because they're a huge market. The salary cap is what makes team composition in the NHL so much more interesting than in other sports and removing it would only make the league worse. You don't dislike the salary cap, you dislike that your favorite team is spending nearly half its money on four players.
