The results stay the same....The Leafs don't win yet they keep giving the players that don't win for us huge raises and that in turn hamstrings the team from making other meaningful transactions. Why should failure upon failure result in major contracts?
No failure? They blow chunks in the playoffs. They won a series last year where they only played 1 good game. If Vaselylevski hadn't been injured, they wouldn't have won that series.

These days, no movement clauses are just a back end payout... if the team wants to dump his contract in year 5 or whenever, they just have to pay him (probably a $2-3m lump sum on expiry in exchange for waving his NMC). And then they trade him to some no hope team and keep half his salary... NHL GMs have made expiring boat anchor contracts a valuable commodity! Just like the NBA...
I'm with Bob, this is absolute lunacy, these guys have won FUCK ALL and they keep getting paid. How can you honestly expect they will win anything when they've continually showed they can't, and now there's even less cap to go around. Don't you watch the highlights to see what each Leaf was doing just before a goal? I'd argue their top 4 suck. You see that 7th goal that Columbus scored on then a week ago? No such player exists(to good no to trade). Would you pay him $20-50mil a season? Where is the line. To be fair, it was 10mil with that term(8yrs) and a NMC. Besides the fact that they gave him this massive contract they also gave him the no trade clause. He now has them by the short and curlys. I don't think the league should allow these no trade clauses. If you sign a contract for a certain amount and term that is fine,but the team should have the option of trading that contract to another team should the team decide that that is in the best interest of the team. With this continuous signing of no trade contracts the teams hands are tied.
Love that bob is pulling no punches, but nylander needed to be retained, he’s a top scorer. It will seem crazy next year but Tavares is off the books the season after and with a growing cap they’ll be poised to add to their d core. I’m more concerned Treliving won’t target the right players

Lol. I have agreed with Bob ZERO times in the past so I am going to flag this day, I totally agree with him today. They had a chance up until July 1 last year to move Marner. This Willy deal locks him in for 8 "no move clause" years. We all know the holes that keep this team far from real cup contenders, this deal has done nothing to address our weakness's which are SIZE, NASTY D-MEN and GOALIES. In fact it has just put more constraints on our ability to go out and get those pieces. Love Willy but this deal does nothing to convince me that management is trying to build a bonafide cup contender. But in retrospect, the seats continue to be filled so you get what you pay for.

The cap creates parity. Everybody has the same cap. Small market teams are still at a disadvantage when it comes to gate receipts. Actually, I'd moslty blame GMs for the cap. If these idiots hadn't signed idiotic contracts all the time there may never have been the necessity of bringing it in the first place. It's not like hockey was perfect before the cap. And maybe they should tighten it up by eliminating the LTI loophole. They don't even want to do that.

This contract won’t age well, guaranteed. You get rid of Marner is always the comeback. Marner drafted 2 years After Nylander and still leads him in points. Marner the fastest to 400 assists in Leafs history. Marner helped Mathews get the Rocket and Tavares career high 47 goals. Marner led the Leafs in points in last seasons playoffs. Marner has the PP run thru him and is on the #1 PK. Mathews has 30 goals this season with the most coming with Marner. So ya, get rid of Marner, so he can go win a Cup.
Sooooo ..... Is Nylander worth 11.5 mil? And would other teams see value in an 8 year Nylander contract? if Nylander has a Modified No Trade Clause for the balance of the season, its still possible, an up and coming team might still want his services to lead their team, and now they would have him under contract for 8 years at the 2023-2024 Sal Cap % right. By signing Nylander at an early time period prior to Trade Deadline, and at the 23-24 Sal Cap % does, saves close to $500K on 87 Mil Sal Cap. Its a 10 team Modified NTC. The "Tkachuk" effect and Treliving did that deal. I guess a more interesting question could be, who's on that 10 No Trade List?
Absolutely no team is trading for Willy with how that contract is structured, he's the Leafs problem now until he's 36 and we blow the team up having done NOTHING.
I think what he's getting at is they maxed out the bonuses so Nylander gets all his money as soon as possible while not violating the cap rules. So only ridiculously profligate teams would be interested. Put another way, he's getting more that $11.5 million a year because he will have the money at the beginning of the year so he'll enjoy investment returns during the year or spend it on hookers and crack or whatever. Imagine, he could OD a few games into the year and the team would never get what they paid for.
@@2Jim2u Cap space is one thing, paying cold hard cash on July 1st is another. Plus his contract is skewed so he makes an absolute buttload of cash early on. Not a lot of NHL teams can or are willing to put that amount of cash out in 1 day, compared to monthly over a whole season.

All Leaf fans should be as frustrated as Bob. I don't have a problem with the Leafs signing Matthews and Nylander, if those are the two forwards they want to build around. However, the problem now will be if they sign Marner. If they do that, they're insane! I'm not even a Leafs fan and this franchise is frustrating. I don't know how people can cheer for this stupid team. All you have to do is look at how NHL Championship teams are built. They're built around 4 players, 2 forward, and either 2 defensemen, or 1 defenseman and a goalie. The money the Leafs can free up not paying Tavares and Marner, they can put towards defenseman and a goalie. If the Leafs sign Marner, they've screwed themselves, again.
How close have they come to winning a cup with the "core four" - they lost in the first round three times to teams THAT EITHER WENT TO THE FINALS OR WON!! WTF is wrong with people - the NHL playoffs are a second season where you only play the good teams - and one of the teams in each conference goes to the finals. AND it could be argued that it was not the Bolts that put them out of the playoffs two years ago - it was ANDREI VASILEVSKIY. They dominated and outshot the Bolts that year and Campbell played quite well - but Vas is Vas (though maybe not anymore - sadly - he seems to have a nagging injury). 2023 they beat the Bolts and came up against a crazy, rough, hungry Cinderella team in the Panthers that NO ONE saw coming. The Cats beat BOSTON for crissakes! 2022 they lost to the Bolts who then lost in the finals to Colorado. 2021 they lost to CAREY PRICE at the top of his game - the Habs then lost to the Bolts. The Leafs had no choice. He may not be exactly worth $11.5M but close. The problem is the construction of the team. Even with the cap increase, less money next year to pay the rest of the team.
