In this video I explain 'stimming' or self-stimulatory behaviour in young children and why children with autism engage it more often than typical children. I've included footage of my son stimming between the ages of 1 and 3.

Beautiful Video. I am 61 with Aspergers and this is a wonderful video on stimming. I still stim after all of these years and like you said it is important! Anyway thanks for posting!

Finally, someone with examples instead of just descriptions of stimming. Gee whiz. A bit frustrating when you're trying to find out if your kid has asperger's and everyone is saying 'It's sort of like this. You know when you do this? Well, it's like that but different'. Okay. Thanks.

I hate how confusing all this is. You can also stim and not be autistic. My son hand flaps When excited, walks on his toes, and I think vocal stims but not sure. He squeals a lot. Mostly when playing with the dogs. He’s been assessed by a developmental pediatrician however and she said he isn’t autistic. Slightly speech delayed but doesn’t meet the other criteria. People who are adhd or spd also stim. I hate how we have to evaluate and worry about every thing our children do because it’s possibly ASD.

How old is he? Higher functioning autistic kids often don’t get diagnosed until preschool age or later when the signs become more obvious. I would definitely get a second opinion as well AND follow up in a few months with your dr. Early intervention is key so if a child does have autism the sooner you start treatment like aba, the better outcome for your child. My son’s DI pediatrician also told me he didn’t have autism only a delay when he was 3. I got two very reputable second opinions after that who gave him an ASD diagnosis. Pls do your homework! U can’t always trust every dr’s judgement (u have to be your child’s number 1 most informed advocate and know him better than anyone else), and again the “diagnosis” matters less than the funding you get through the diagnosis- quality aba covered through your insurance which will help your child forever even if they are just “delayed.”

Whatever helps him, encourage that and even do it with him! I think no matter what he is diagnosed with or not diagnosed with, I think encouraging healthy stims would be good 😊 in other words, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. But you worrying about your child shows your big heart ❤❤❤

I’m grateful to have found your channel. My 2 year old son is undiagnosed, but has shown many signs of ASD. He is about to begin play therapy, and hopefully will receive speech therapy soon. Unfortunately, Medicaid where I live no longer covers speech therapy for delay, so our journey to early intervention has been a hard one so far. Thank you for having the courage to share your personal story with all of us.

Search for Early childhood intervention and your state. In GA they have Babies Can't Wait and in TX it's ECI (early childhood intervention). I was told every state has them. They may be able to get him some speech therapy and other help. At 3 the public school is required to give therapies including speech, you can write a request for an evaluation and send it to the school board. www.understood.org/en/school-learning/special-services/ieps/getting-an-iep-for-your-very-young-child

Ahhhhh nooo u must interrupt the stimming and redirect constantly- that is the only way to reduce it. Then u get a trained bcba and rbt or behavioral tech on your aba team to help you replace your son’s repetitive behaviors or stims w/more functional Or socially appropriate behavior. You want your child to function as independently as possible. When a child repeatedly stims he is NOT learning from his environment. He is tuned out. U want him learning and engaged w/u and others as much as possible. That is the goal.
@whitneymason406
@whitneymason406 2 года назад
@@wayforward5563 No, suppressing stims can cause PTSD over time and ABA is falling out of favor because of this. Society just needs to be more understanding, people with autism don't need to behave in a way that is "socially appropriate" just to appease others when all they are trying to do is self regulate.

Our little (age 7) still stims when excited or when something is intensely visually stimulating - he has been doing it since he was a baby. He does not have autism. Once when he was watching tires spin on his truck and started stimming I asked him if he was excited about the truck and he told me he was pretending he was the tires/gears spinning around.

Humming was the first “stim,” for us as well. I have videos of our son at one years old stacking blocks and humming away. Brycen will be turning 3 in June. The only time I redirect Brycen is when we are doing an activity that is meant for a learning purpose, but I also have learned some activities are not “suited” to try and “suppress” his stims. For example Brycen loves to climb up on his dad and then have his dad flip him or have his dad put him upside down (I say his dad because our boy is on the bigger side and this mom can only do it for a little bit before I feel like my arms going to fall off) HOWEVER this activity motivates Brycen to verbally communicate , we are still in the prompting stages but we get words like “climb” “flip” “up side down” - if the activity has anything to do with putting objects into something or he is playing with play dough it’s very hard to get him to verbally interact, Brycen usually goes right to humming. I am going to add this book because I was suggested it by our doctors during diagnosis and it has opened my eyes to how my son thinks it’s called “overcoming autism” it’s co written by a doctor in the field and a mom who has raised a child with autism.

@@alexsingh9313 do you only do those things when you're anxious or is it sometimes an impulse that happens randomly? I have a tween with autism and he can't explain why he does it, it happens all throughout the day and seems pretty random usually, especially when he plays video games. He hums and presses his hands to his face and makes noises that most people have never heard, so they tend to stare. He's "high-functioning" and incredibly verbal and intelligent, but he struggles to express himself.

@@jaxmom09 It kind of just happens like an impulse, I usually try to explain it as a way my thoughts express themselves I stim when im thinking and it helps me. since you said he stims while playing video games it could be happy thoughts cuz he got through a level or task in the game or he could be frustrated about something in the game. @@jaxmom09 my 15 yr old mostly stims when he is in "creative mode", we call it a "walk about", he paces all around the house with a rocking motion and hums in a droning rythm. He has done it forever, but maybe around 11 or 12 he was able to explain that's when he is thinking of his "books" (he writes books in his mind, massive, complex storylines). It happens less now, mostly in the evenings, I think it's his way of coming down from the stress of masking all day (as best he can) in school. But he also has more stress related stims like finger flicks, ear pressing and flicking, and a repetitive pattern of finger movements (that I personally find beautiful ❤️), these happen when he is working hard to maintain his masking, talking with people, or when is he preparing for a performance (he is in theatre arts)

He made unusual noises and had a very physical response to excitement from being just a few months olds. I think we noticed differences from peers in self stimulatory behaviour around maybe around 16 months but it didn't become really apparent until he was nearly 2. Hope this helps :)
