Though I am a 71 year-old Catholic, I have been unsuccessful in trying to find a thorough history about communion. I prefer to read something that is not Catholic, but something that is scholarly and completely objective. IMO, the Catholic's Sunday worship has been taken over by the Eucharist (probably has been for over a thousand years). By that I mean that the Eucharist completely dominates Sunday's worship and the preaching. I wonder how it ever got to this point. Surely, when Christians gathered in the first couple of centuries, the focus of their gathering must have been teachings about who Jesus was and what he meant for us. I cannot believe that the gathering was mostly about receiving the bread and cup. Somewhere along the line the emphasis on the Gospel of Christ took a second seat to the reception of communion. I wish this had not happened, but it did IMO. Most of my childhood friends were Catholic (we all went to Catholic grade school and high school), but most of them have little to do with Catholicism or Christianity as they have grown older. IMO, the most logical reason is because we thoroughly learned about Catholic practices, but we learned very little about the essence of the Gospel. I suspect I will get push back from some Catholics, but I have been there and done that; and I am convinced that the Gospel/Scriptures are far more important in forming our faith in Christ than communion. Please do not tell me that the "Gospel" is read each Sunday. Listening to someone reading a few paragraphs from the Bible each Sunday is not sufficient.

Go to your local Calvary Chapel church. It is a Verse by verse Bible teaching, EACH AND EVERY WEEK. The Gospel take a back seat to nothing. The Eucharist is simply infused into the sermon. I pray you find the truth you are seeking. I am an ex-Catholic and it took me years to realize that Catholicism of today does not respect the Holy Scriptures and rather bends a knee to man made traditions. Also, the church fathers said a lot concerning the Eucharist. Look up all the key phrases they all said.

This is how I felt in the Catholic church. I really didn't feel or learn a scripture filled time within the Catholic mass.

@@danapriess8860 Thanks for your reply. As I approach the latter years of my life, I realized that I did not grasp the Gospel. What was good about it? So I went on a search starting about 6 to 7 years ago, and now several times a week I discover something new and beautiful in the Scriptures. I say to myself, "I should have heard or known this years ago." I was so hung up about "doing the right thing". But "...this is the deed that is required: believe in the one whom God has sent". Just two weeks ago I read 2 Timothy 3:15-17 and it hit my like a ton of bricks. Knowing the scriptures are paramount. Then a few days ago I read something that gave me a good laugh. Peter (I think in his second letter) wrote that "Paul can be difficult to understand". That was funny. Again, thanks for your comment.

I used to be a Catholic until I started reading the Bible for myself. I then saw all the discrepancies that catholic teachings have, most of them don’t line up with scripture. I then started to go to a Protestant evangelical church and later got baptized. This happened eleven years ago. This church is very faithful to Bible teachings and I have been attending services regularly since then. I still keep on reading the Bible. Even though I have read it many times, I always find deeper revelations each time. There are many layers to it as you keep on digging. It also brings me closer to God while enabling me to worship Him in truth and in the Spirit.

@@flutep2069 I often have said, "finding Jesus in the Catholic church is like "finding Waldo". He (Jesus) is there, but he is hidden among all the other stuff....." Thanks for your reply.

The Bible tells us to take on the first day of the week (Sunday) Acts 20: 7. Note the same wording is used for the weekly contribution 1 Cor. 16: 1-2

"Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died."

On the contrary, the Bible do say how often. Corinthians states that "as often as you meet"

Jesus instituted the Memorial of his death on the date of the Jewish Passover, which was replaced among his disciples by the Memorial of Christ’s death. The Passover was an ANNUAL event, celebrated on Nisan 14. Similarly, the Jewish Festival of Unfermented Cakes, the Festival of Booths, and the Day of Atonement were all held ONCE A YEAR! Even if a married couple loves each other, do they celebrate their anniversary on a daily or weekly basis? No, because it would diminish the importance by celebrating it frequently.

@@sunnyjohnson992 You're right on Lord's supper equivalent to Passover but you're wrong on the frequency. There's a backing of more than one book in the New Testament on how often we should observe the Lord's supper. First, the early church in the book of Acts states that in the first day of the week (Sunday) then Paul says that "as often as meet" in Corinthians. How often do we meet as ecclesia, Sunday. Get your facts right

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, if He intended to establish this as a symbol, why did He let all the people who were shocked by his words "walk away and walk with him "no more," and try to stop them by saying "I was just speaking symbolically: come back! You don''t understand" No, he let them walk, and "they walked with Him no more". They could not accept this like small children, that all things are possible through God. The dissenting disciples were the first protestants. Think about it honestly, take off your anti-Catholic defenses, and yes, pray on it.

some people believe its just a symbol and nothing special, which is offesive towards christs sacrifice.

Too often it is just another routine ritual. I believe that it should be a "special" event. I am uncomfortable with this constant reference to drinking blood and eating flesh.

Fruit of vine is a symbol of Jesus’s blood as the bread represents His body. By this we remember His sacrifice He made for our forgiveness of sins.
