PRS "tap" the coils by using a standard split wiring, but they put a resistor between the bonded wire goes between the coils and the ground so you get a bit off the off coil when "tapping" it.

Very well described. I believe it’s often called a “partial tap resistor”.
@ChrisShortyAllen
@ChrisShortyAllen 4 месяца назад
Similar to how coil splitting essentially halves a humbucker, coil tapping cancels out the full length of the pickup magnet by taking the signal from a shorter point in the wire (usually around the midpoint). It can be utilised in both humbucker and single coil pickups. This reduced output affects tone slightly differently to splitting. In theory your guitar is more versatile.
@zanzabar4ky7
@zanzabar4ky7 4 месяца назад
@@ChrisShortyAllen the way prs does it they essentially have a fixed volume on one coil. That isn't really a tap. It makes what is a tap vs a split even more confusing

I never knew that! Thanks for sharing that bit of knowledge! I suppose if you were handy with a soldering iron, you could get really experimental and get some very unique tones.

14:50, Technically, that is a Resistor. The Resistor's colored bands denote it's Ohm value. The Capacitors (yellow) are flush against the bottom of the control cavity and typically are wired between the Volume and Tone Potentiometers. The purpose of the Resistors in this PRS Control Circuit are to reduce the Tone Potentiometer's overall value by being wired in parallel. What this does is allow the Humbucker pickups to see a 500K Ohm Tone Pot Load (as is normal for a Humbucking Pickup). When the Push-Pull Tone Pot is activated the Pickup's output is reduced (either Tapped Coil or Single Coil), the single coil signal now passes through the extra Resistor's parallel circuit and reduces the Tone Pot's value to better match the single coil output (as Single Coil Pickups typically require a 250K - 300K Ohm Tone Pot load). All of this extra circuitry keeps the single coil and humbucker modes from sounding too bright or too dark giving them a balanced tonal output.
@Aubrey_Yates
@Aubrey_Yates 4 месяца назад
Thank you for pointing this out. My OCD mind went straight to "That's not a capacitor, that's a resistor." Your explanation totally makes sense why you would use a resistor in that circuit.🤣

@fairguinevere666
@fairguinevere666 4 месяца назад
Definitely not for that, although you could add that to the circuit if needed. I think it's somewhere around a 8.8k±5% going off grey grey red gold, you'd see a yellow on one of the 500ks needed for that circuit to make it in the 100kohm magnitude, I think it's a red for 1kohm. That'd also give you a voltage division in the range needed, and PRS is known for using partial coil splits. And ~9k would give close to the 5 and a bit k out when tapped. A bit much for my ears, I think you get more single coil sparkle with something closer to a 1.2k with that circuit, but regardless better than a pure coil split as it adds beef to an otherwise anemic sound.

Love your show Trogly. And I love PRS guitars. But that is not a black gold "wrap "- wrap means that the natural binding is covered up by the paint. So that's just black gold. And as a wood library owner, I believe that all of the wood libraries are indeed 10 tops. That's kind of the point, the dealer is choosing a sick crazy flame or quilt top to be part of the run. 👍🏻

A coil tap & coil split are different things. A split is what the name implies: shunting one coil of the humbucker to ground (in this case, PRS uses resistors in-line to make it a partial split. A coil tap uses multiple hot wires that can vary the output (after so many windings, they "tap" off that output, and then continue winding the pickup).

That 594 Hollowbody II isn't semi-hollow actually - its fully hollow! The only piece connecting the top and back are for the bridge to remain stable. They actually do make a Semi-Hollow 594 in singlecut and doublecut, where they have 1 f-hole and have the center-block ES-type construction! :)
@mikeomatic9905
@mikeomatic9905 4 месяца назад
I mean, it's still not fully hollow, it's just nearly fully hollow :P A big part of actual hollow bodies is the top being able to vibrate up and down, which the HB2 just doesn't do. It's extremely resonant of course, but it's quite different from a fully hollow body.
@NewPraetorianBlues
@NewPraetorianBlues 4 месяца назад
@@mikeomatic9905 Interesting, I was under the impression that all hollowbody guitars had that support chunk under the bridge. They're clearly not my area of expertise I suppose lol. I guess this adds some kind of redundancy with the semi-hollow 594? I wouldn't put it past PRS since they use the same body shape for nearly every model haha
@mikeomatic9905
@mikeomatic9905 4 месяца назад
@@NewPraetorianBlues so the semi hollows (594, CE24, Special, etc) all are chambered out a lot around the sides, but are more solid than the HB2. Something like an ES335 is actually a little more hollowed out than a semi-hollow PRS, as it only has the center block. If you look at, say, a true hollow body Gretsch, (like the Chet Atkins, IIRC), you'll see the entire top is floating. That's often why they have a trapeze tailpiece -- the top is too thin to anchor the bridge to. One issue these can have is that the tops will vibrate in certain conditions, causing some feedback. The PRS HB2 solves that by having that one block under the bridge that connects top to bottom, and keeps the top from vibrating.
@NewPraetorianBlues
@NewPraetorianBlues 4 месяца назад
@@mikeomatic9905 Wow... interesting... This may be a little off the beaten path but if you're familiar with Languedoc guitars, I believe those employ a trapeze tailpiece as well, are you aware of that being the case there? I'm curious mainly because Trey Anastasio is a tone hero of mine, and I know Paul from Goose uses a HB2 for very similar tones to Trey's early 90's stuff, but Trey seems to be like a lion tamer of harmonic feedback (with a non-obscene amount of gain) and I'm wondering if that detail in construction is a differing factor in the feedback response of something akin to a Gretsch Chet Adkins or "archtop construction" (?) guitars
@mikeomatic9905
@mikeomatic9905 4 месяца назад
@@NewPraetorianBlues To be honest, I don't have any experience whatsoever with Languedoc guitars. The trapeze tailpiece looks pretty cool (IMO) so it wouldn't surprise me if some guitar makers just opt to have one if it's not strictly necessary. One thing that might matter depending on Trey's rig is what the stage volume is. If it's a fairly quiet stage (no big amps, drums further away or isolated) then having a fully hollow body should probably be fine. It's only when things get pretty loud that feedback starts being an issue.

Trogly, the best strap to have for a 'heavier" guitar is the widest one you can find, and wear it out towards the end of your shoulder, so the weight is resting on bone, and not on the muscles and nerves closer to your neck. About the Brazilian rosewood; PRS do sometimes make them for sale overseas. For example the recent Joe Walsh signature model was available in Europe with the Brazilian board. I assume PRS felt it worthwhile going to the trouble of the certification for that model. And the rosewood headstock veneer is a standard thing. I’m assuming though that it would also be Brazilian to match the fingerboard on this guitar; the standard would be Indian rosewood.

The artist package meant that it was a finish that was not normally available, it had hybrid nickel/gold hardware, and it had a special artist-grade top that is supposedly higher than 10-top. (But below Private Stock.)

Some of these trim finishes have been discontinued, like the artist package was only done for a few years and then I think they stopped doing that one and started the wood library package. The artists were nice. But I think the last year they made them was 2018? I have a 2021 wood library with a one piece quilt top that is insane.

@@robertkalmey5270ah yeah, I checked get email I got from PRS with the specs, and it's an artist-grade top. So still between Private Stock and 10-Top. That being said, it was a 2017 Cu24 IIRC.

I think it means it is only for sale in the USA. Could it be because of the woods when that was a big issue? I read somewhere Gibson was actually 24 & 9/16 or something like that at some early point.

I love the service from Wildwood Guitars. They will set up, even used, guitars how you want them before shipping them to you.

A Wood Library PRS ($4k-$6k) is just a more affordable Private Stock ($12k+) Guitar. Wood Library and Private Stock are PRS' version of Custom Shop Guitars. A beautiful PRS doesn't meed to be a Wood Library. If you will be getting a high end PRS, always look for a Quilted Maple Top. Most PRS' come with nice flamed maple tops. A TEN Top is better book matched. A nice new feature to look for is a satin or color-matched (with the top) flamed maple neck. You can also get a satin rosewood neck.

I've seen dozens if not hundreds of "10-tops" from prs and in my opinion it means absolutely nothing when coming from them. I've seen so many non 10 tops that line up and have better figuring so it makes no sense how they choose.

You are missing the S2 and the CE lines that are between the SE and Core models. Both great lines but offer different specs to the big boy guitars and the student guitars.

Beautiful guitar and congrats to the buyer! Hopefully someone has you review a private stock soon. When I bought my lp custom last year from sweetwater, the sales rep recommended I consider a private stock for a next purchase.

One thing interesting about the bridge is that the "giant" saddles/blocks were changed to be smaller (more similar to Gibson) at some point after 2019. I'm not sure why, and I kind of prefer the bigger ones, personally.

A viewer sent it to me a few years ago. I believe "centerpoint" is the search term you're looking for to find one

Congratulations David. Beautiful guitar. Some great design improvements compared to a Les Paul.

Such a great guitar, unfortunately with a deal breaker pick up switch location on a double cut.

They did that to mimic the Les Paul. This is basically the most Les Paul type guitar of all the PRS guitars. The single cut shows that better but I like double cut PRS.

I have a PRS 408 wood library edition.. its pretty damn nice. The built for USA only is because of the rules with the Brazilian Rosewood laws.
