He set up the coast guard and the treasury. He was active in securing foreign incvestments in our nation. He was active in educational development and had an exemplary college record. He fought for social equality and justice. Hamilton understood both the law and business. He wrote and spoke elegantly. He was a leader of good moral principles and family values. A couple of things that Prof. McConnell mentioned need clarification: Hamilton wasn't necessarily IMMEDIATELY noticed by Washington. He served as a captain in the New York Train of Artillery through the New York campaign of 1776 all the way through to the battles of Trenton and Princeton at the turn of 1776-77 and it was only after that he was invited to join General Washington's "family". Washington had taken command in late 1775 during the siege of Boston, didn't likely meet young Captain Hamilton till after the disastrous retreat from Long Island and so it's not like Washington just saw the dynamic young artillery captain and immediately asked him to join his staff. When Hamilton did join his staff he was only ONE OF SEVERAL aides de camp including his friend and close collaborator John Laurens, George Baylor, Edmund Randolph, Robert Hanson Harrison, George Lewis, Stephen Moylan, William Palfrey, Thomas Mifflin, Tench Tilghman, even the painter of the Yorktown surrender, John Trumbull at one point served as Washington's ADC's. Hamilton became one of Washington's closest collaborators but wasn't "running the army for Washington" - Washington ran the army, Hamilton did the paperwork and plenty of the behind the scenes stuff including prisoner-exchange negotiations, negotiating with the intransigent congress in Philadelphia for money and supplies, etc. etc. Hamilton's early experience as a clerk with (and at one point personally managing the entire trading operation for) the trading firm Beekman and Cruger in the West Indies stood him in good stead to manage the logistical affairs of the Continental Army - and would later be utterly invaluable in setting the nascent United States on a firm financial footing after starting out in a position of impossible bankruptcy. Hamilton did not lead "three infantry divisions" at Yorktown and the usage of the term "infantry division" is extremely misleading. A modern US Infantry Division numbers several thousand men. Hamilton led the American contingent of 400 Continental Light Infantrymen selected from General Peter Muhlenberg's division, a force that originally was supposed to have been led by one of General Lafayette's French Officers, Colonel Gimat. Hamilton is said to have protested so fervently and it was decided that since Redoubt Number 9 was to be assaulted by French Army troops under Major General Baron De Viomenil, it would look bad if another French officer commanded the American troops detailed to storm Redoubt Number 10. Thus command of the important night assault on Redoubt Number 10 was given to Colonel Hamilton. The name of the anti-slavery group was the New York Manumission Society, not the New York Anti-Slavery Society. The group worked toward gradual manumission (Manumission, or enfranchisement, is the act of freeing slaves by their owners.)
