In a world where the word genius is subject to terrible inflation, Glover is an actual genius. I've never liked surrealism before, but he uses it as the condiment it is supposed to be, to express the absurdity that is mixed into reality. Most other artists make surrealism the main dish, to impress with weirdness, easy and empty. Glover's surrealism is dosed to perfection. It makes me feel less lonely and confronts me with myself. Class art can do one of those two, Glover's writing is the rare art that can do both. Thank you for this video.

When i see Atlanta, i feel seen, even the FX trailers/teasers you can see Donald standing still but falling into the next day, or when he walks backwards with Darius & Paperboi. It makees you acknowledge "something aint right here". Whether its the moral compass thats out of whack, or the culture we create then profited from, the systems we are embedded into with invisible chains, etc.

The term Awkward black comes to mind. I was and still am a awkward black guy and i felt thisbshow to and almost spiritual level. Being from the black community but not being fully accepted by the black community hits hard. Like they said earlier in the video you just want to belong. Too nerdy for the black kids, too ethnic for the white kids, the mexican kids usually kick it with themselves. My father made it his lifes goal for me and my sibling to have and use our extensive vocabulary but to the other kids you are white washed, or speak white. Donald Glover just nailed it perfectly.
@katykatforeverx
@katykatforeverx 7 месяцев назад
You're pushing and uplifting the stereotype narrative of blacks when you call yourself an " 'awkward' black". Move past people less educated than you (black AND white and others) that want to put you in a box and just be you. A black person. Unapologetically.

Its truly sad that some "awkward black guys" feel they cant be themselves and have to conform to their environment/peers.
@jozzz222
@jozzz222 6 месяцев назад
So do you feel because you are intelligent, proper, and unique that makes you awkward? Make it make sense. The black community has a sinister way of having this linear limited way of thinking. Like there’s such a problem when it comes to being inclusive to all different types of black ppl. I don’t see other cultures do this with their own as much smh. But if you’re a sexyy redd or a blue face you get multiple passes. That’s dysfunctional, awkward, and cringey asf if you ask me. I hope you don’t think your awkward because the black community said that you are.

I am latina who's a proud geek but grew up in a dominant black/hispanic hood environment , has adhd,depression and anxiety, all my life i never fit in to any sort of group . I came to the conclusion...it does'nt have to be all or nothing. Just be . As humans we tend to rely on tribalism to feel secure and psychological shove people into categories which makes us think we're in control of our understanding of reality we need to analyze what we want in community we need to expand our interests and include different people's backgrounds and requires stepping out of our comfort zones. Of course this takes a great amount of self awareness, taking courage and therapy to practice self healing.

As a huge Donald Glover fan who started watching Atlanta when it originally released, up until it was completed, and then again from the beginning recently (I was like 14 and now I’m 22 lol), I really just came here to say how much I appreciate all the time and effort you put into this. I’ve always told people I love Atlanta and that it’s a really good show but when they ask me to describe what it’s about I always find myself at a loss for words, or rather stumped because I don’t know how to. This is the best essay and description of the show I’ve seen online including published articles about it, and I really really think you did an amazing job at putting everything into words. The show spans such a vast range of topics and has super unique perspectives and it’s really a lot to take in all of it. Thanks for this content, I know the writers would be proud

thank god im seeing someone else out there with some critical thinking talking about atlanta lmao, i mean ive some reactors have some really good opinions, but no decent video essays or anything similar until now. i mostly just find people talking about his art style rather than the actual meanings and implications. the show makes such important, poignant, thought-provoking, yet overlooked messages, and the mindsets of lots of the fans (epsecially white, appropriating fans) prove the exact commentary that donald glover is giving. at the same time, it is most certainly "airing out the room," releasing racial tension, and helping many fans be more honest and open-minded towards these issues. plus i find the show as almost more philosophical than commentary-focused; it's posing more questions than answers. plus it focuses on extreme big-picture issues that can apply to almost anyone that's in an oppressed state of class or humanity.

Great breakdown! I remember hearing Donald describe the show Atlanta as wanting people to feel what it's like to be black, but I didn't really get that from the show. But now I understand he meant 'this is what other people feel & look like from the perspective of being black in Atlanta'. The show was so surreal because it's about getting across how these situations feel. Now I gotta rewatch the series with that in mind. Originaly I went in expecting more inside jokes about being black in Atlanta or some fresh perspectives, but now I see it was more about accurately getting the experience across of how it feels.

Life for a black person is transactional is an idea i always felt but i never heard anyone say it out loud. I made a video called the insanity of race that would paor really well with this, i basically found out how race was started in America and how absurd and ex0loiative it was. The race of black and white did not exist officially until the 1600s-ish. Everything we were taught about race is a lie, literally everything. I love how Atlanta shows the effects of this manipulation and how this channel explains it so well, your vince staples video really showed me a new viewpoint also.

as a white immigrant who grew up in the south tampa ghetto, atlanta is my comfort show. as my mom’s immigration status became more legal our economic status went up. i could never really bring myself to fit in with the suburban white crowd and that brought me such a sense of carnal rage. i could never be one of those white kids that pretended to be black because of the pride i feel in my homelands culture, yet i couldn’t act like the white kids in knew because it made me feel like a fraud. this dissonance really bothered me and i could never understand why until i watched atlanta, it was a beautiful reminder of my childhood but it was also an avenue of growth and introspection. I’m a white woman who was in a years long relationship with a rich trust fund guy. I didn’t grow up with much and my family still doesn’t have much. My friends look like a fuckin Benetton advert. lol His friends were rich boarding school people. I could never quite articulate how it felt to move among those rich people all those years. I also work on the staff side at a college (as a former first gen college student). My dad also worked on a college campus for years doing maintenance for the dorms. One day I was with my ex going to a work event and walking across campus with him. We walked past a group of construction workers taking a break. SUDDENLY it dawned on me that I had always, for all the years I worked at that college, felt way more akin to and comfortable with those construction workers and the maintenance staff and cleaners at the college than I ever had with the Deans or faculty. And I knew my boyfriend literally didn’t even notice them. To me, I saw them as familiar guys like my uncles, and to him they didn’t even register. I’d have similar thoughts at restaurants if him or his parents were being impatient I’d remark, “well the host just double sat our server so he/she is probably overwhelmed, but their other table just gave their drink order and that third one just had apps dropped, so they should be over soon.” They’d of course never worked in the service industry and would not have noticed or watched any of the restaurant staff except when they were at our table. I never said any of this to him of course but god his family was insufferable. And I learned to always bring a $20 bill to any dinner with them and I’d find our server, apologize for them being horrible, and give the waiter/waitress the bill. Anyways your comment just reminded me of all this. Wild how moving through a whole different culture of your own people can feel so surreal.

Thank you to talking about this, as once I'd finished the last episode I was left wanting to reflect and connect with others on how the show made other people feel, because it was so profound, silly, harsh and beautiful all at the same time. So deeply touching. Atlanta remains one of the bravest dramas ever made. It goes out on a limb confidently taking us through a world that seems surreal, wild and crazy only for it to gradually dawn that no matter how leftfield the show was, all it was ever doing was holding up a mirror to reality. The height of inspired creativity that is seen in this work stands alongside the very best drama in film or TV ever made. And it's not given even a third of the respect it deserves.

That scene you pointed out where the guy questions Earn feeling like an outsider hit hard for me when I was watching. Had literal flashbacks of my childhood, and my struggle with identity as a biracial person (Black and Polynesian). Didn't help that I went through that same "you talk white" criticisms on top of that. Made me feel alienated from my own people. Then on the other end of the spectrum I was sometimes perceived as only being Black to some of my friends who weren't Black. Well, either that or incorrectly labled as Arab or Indian in regards to strangers. Some people just straight up ask me what my ethnicity is to this day. So I've learned that my perceived racial identity to others just seems to be contextual. Just grit my teeth and bear with it. I know what I am. But I think it made me stronger and more open minded in the end. Helped me focus on finding my true self as opposed to trying to mold myself to be perceived a certain way. And in the end my real friends have always been there. Still are to this day.

Great video! Makes me want to watch Atlanta, I have never watched it before. Plus I like Donald Glover from the movie Solo and his song This Is America. He is really a smart and talented person.
