After the Dance of Dragons started, Prince Daemon was looking for any advantages the blacks could get. Vermithor was King Jaehaerys’ dragon and at the start of the Dance, he was only outsized by Vaeghar. Who was ridden by Aemond One Eye and his fabulous chin. After the death of King Jaehaerys, Vermithor remained riderless for the entirety of King Visery’s rule and made his home on a volcanic island off the coast of Dragonstone. There it is.
After the Green’s initiated their coup putting Aegon the Second on the Iron Throne, Jacaerys Velaryon set out to find more Dragon Riders seeking out bastards with blood of old Valeriya. A lot of men were absolutely nuked by Vermithor. That was until Hugh Hammer, that’s the horniest name in Westerosi history. There is a lot of lore beyond this point, so to sum it up, Hugh Hammer and some of his fellow bastards dubbed Dragon Seeds, defected and joined the Greens. This was After Rhaenyra had finally won back Kings Landing.
At this point in the war, Aemond and Daemon were dead as were their dragons, Aegon the Second was missing so Hugh just went ahead and declared himself King since he now had the largest Dragon in the realm. Hugh died trying to mount Vermithor during an ambush and I won’t spoil what happens to Vermithor from here but if the fables are true, it will be heartbreaking.
