Narcissists can have insufferable levels of self-importance, to the extent of truly convincing themselves of their superiority over you. What's that all about? Dr. Les Carter offers keen insights about a predominant characteristic that props up their false narrative. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

After someone whom I had just met warned me that the man whom I used to babysit is now a jerk while he was being a research geneticist it was at that point I finally stopped worshiping all of my teachers and the very well educated whom I thought were always going to be way more intelligent than me. I haven't interacted with them since then. While wondering what she meant by that remark. However I am so grateful to her. That one comment of mine changed my whole life after in grade 3 I had flunked the screening test for being an idiot. Which of course later got disproven well enough to then be regarded as being normal and within the average range of intelligence for a college student. However until then when I was found reading at a grade 6 level in grade 3 before that I was often the target of derision when being called retarded, slow, with a sloppy walk (while recovering from an ankle sprain) etc. Was a good lesson for me. Made me less into a less assuming person too whenever hearing gossip about someone else. Less complacent when seeing a child or student being overdisciplined too.

@@francesbernard2445 I regard a strong sense of self and worth the best defense against this type of marginalization. The type you experienced. I am sorry you had that to deal with from a young age. We all have inherent worth - from birth - some share their gifts for the greater good, others indulge in mockery, belittling, gossip, and other unsavory behaviors discussed here in Dr Cs channel. That's the free will piece we also inherently possess. My 2 children, both on the autism spectrum, were often bullied, had things thrown at them at school and we're also called retarded. They just had a different affect. My oldest now runs a business in Canada, writes fan fiction and can quote chapter and verse on all things world history or Star Wars related. Einstein was also not a "good student" by the metrics at the time. What we need most is belief in ourselves and to know we are never defined by others opinions of us. We are the authors, each day a clean new page. Keep writing your story. You are the only one who can, and others need to hear it! Be Well, Be Blessed!

This describes my husband 100%!!!! Thank you, Dr. Carter, for this explanation. I admitted myself in the hospital last week. I had an absolute nervous/mental breakdown! It was the best 4 days! The doctors and psychiatrists were so caring and validated all of my emotions due to the gaslighting and exhausting 24 years of marriage. I've been called crazy almost every day. My therapist has told me for 2 years that I am perfectly sane. The psychiatrists told me I am certainly sane, and they could tell I had been mentally abused for many years. 😢 In the hospital, I felt calm, at peace, no headaches and no muscle aches, no brain fog/confusion. I was able to realign and reset. I came home feeling stronger and more assured in my thoughts, opinions, and emotions. I pray I will never "break" again like I did a week ago. It is a dark place I don't ever want to be in again.

What’s really hard, DrC, is when that’s all you have. When it’s what you’ve grown up with and married into, it’s so hard to leave. And for awhile it’s hard not to go back to. I finally stopped going back. But it sure is difficult to make new friends, especially ones who feel like family. Still, being lonely and away from all of that is still far better than the alternative. At least I am lonely and at peace instead of with people who constantly chose their hubris over their relationship with me.

He replied with simple directions. Instead of saying "thank you" or kindly inquiring more if she was confused, my mother asked him in a very haughty manner "What is your job here?" He replied "security parking guard" or some variation. She left the lot. And proceeded to come home and tell me about how she'd treated him. This was during a period after I broke up, and he wanted to work things out. Absolutely no interested in self retrospection. The only thing he ever admitted to being wrong about was a text message that he’d sent… everything he’s ever said or done was supportive… and yes, there was obligatory support in between the false accusations and treating me like a child and needing constant assurance and questioning my integrity and demanding everything his way.

I've had to deal with a lot of hubris from my parents and employers. I joined the US Army when I was 18 years-old as an E-1 Private. All the E-4 Specialist and above ranks treated me as they would treat a slave. My platoon Sergeant made me scrub his floor with a toothbrush when we first met and I didn't do anything wrong to deserve that punishment. He was just enjoying the feeling of superiority and being arrogant(Hubris). My father owned a construction business and was using me for cheap labor because he didn't want to obey the law. He didn't want to use an employment agency to get workers because the agency required him to carry Workman's Compensation, healthcare insurance, pay taxes, pay into social security, and pay into medicare. He could skip all of that by using me for cheap labor. Then he acted like he was doing me a favor. Basically, my parents and employers showed such hubris that they wanted me to get on my knees and worship them. Looking back now that I'm 43 years-old, I just see a lot of people in their 20's and early 30's, that had power over me when I was 18 years-old and were lacking in self confidence.

@@GwenKellerAs a scapegoat she expected everything? Like what tho, I’m really curious. Mostly scapegoats don’t expect everything, they expect what is normal to be expected like love, loyalty, compassion and support from family but don’t get it. The golden ones expect everything like they want an inflated ego, want to be served and sometimes feared because they think they’re above everyone, they want to control others.

Dr. Carter, for a while now, I've been wondering about this trend of the "Go Fund Me" campaigns. I guess I understand if it's a child who needs a new heart or something like that - medical bills that the people can't afford, for instance. But......wait for it! I know a couple with young children who started a "Go Fund Me" so their children could have private school and horses. If this isn't hubris, what is?? When I raised an eyebrow at the parents, their answer was, "It's only normal for parents to want the best for their children."

You have completely summed up my ex partner in this video. It’s shocking when you are just being normal and asking for a normal thing like that young man did and you get met with that level of aggression. That happened all the time with my ex partner as well as the other things you mention here. It’s so great to have it laid out in front of me as you have just done. Every day I get stronger and can integrate what has happened and think no no no when it comes to this person. His behaviour is repulsive.

I have experienced this with my cousin, who has demonstrated full-blown NPD, for years. I didn't know what it was until I ran across people like the Doctor here on RU-vid about three and a half years ago which just the time he stopped speaking to me because he crossed the line one time too many and I corrected him. This is an example of his personality that I've dealt with for years. He carries a gun that he accidentally misfired three times. I have another friend who is almost an expert with firearms. He told me that I should advise my cousin to get some instruction. I replied, " Me tell him that he needs training! ". My friend didn't understand that my cousin is not a person who one can advise about such a matter. Let me tell you his reaction towards me over a lesser matter. I'm a diabetic and I never cut my own toe nails. I see a podiatrist regularly. My cousin is also a diabetic who cut his own nails and got an infection. I told him that diabetics should have professionals do that for them. He paused and got this look that spelled disdain that I told him a better way of handling his feet. I mean, it was chilling. Needless to say, I don't advise him of the weather report if I know what is coming. All I can say about him is good grief! He started acting like this in his twenties, and I thought it was a phase. Something he would eventually grow out of in time. I know for a fact that he has gotten worse, and he is months from being seventy. He acts nuts sometimes. 😮

The kid might have been very condescending and illicit in its behavior and i can really only imagine that is the case, being that in that sense, the home owners response is quite warranted. There is no premise of corruption in the story and this seems important. To have a negative implication without* the premise of corruption seems to be superficial convience.
