Cells at Work isn't just an educational tool - it's a surprisingly effective work of art. And like any work of art, we can hold it up like a mirror to examine ourselves as easily as we can its subject matter.

For me the cancer episode has other allusions. I'm a nurse, so I was surprised to see that the cancer cell expressed a lot of the exasperation and frustrations that actual cancer patients have. For example, a cancer patient might feel angry at the fact that cells of their OWN bodies are working to destroy them. Or in the episode where Cancer says something along the lines what has he done to deserve this, he was just born from another mistake, It isn't their fault they have this disease, it's not fair, that their sadness and anger might not be remembered when they are gone-- that, too, is something patients might express. Young, old, any gender, these patients suffer and go through a lot of emotional grief and strife. It was quite shocking to see Cancer itself express the same sentiments many patients have, and I thought that was a neat, clever parallel. Cancer Cell didn't exactly remind me of feeling like some sort of outcast or invalid, instead it reminded me of how human cancer patients may feel as they go through this disease.

I haven't even watched this show why are you making me tear up like this EDIT Watched the first 8 episodes all in one go and yeah, the way they handled cancer is neat. One of the things that puts cancer apart more than anything is that it's your own body acting up and not an outside threat, so it makes sense for there to be a lot more mixed feelings involved. Cancer in itself (in real life) isn't evil, it's a mistake. A horrible and potentially lethal mistake, but a mistake all the same. That's not an easy thing to cope with for anyone in the equation. I hope there will be a more nuanced view of some bacteria too since, while foreign, there is a lot of bacteria in our intestines that are beneficial. Not sure how that would be shown though, since most episodes seem to be centred around enemies that the RBC can be threatened by and which the immune system can then take down.

As someone that who has lost multiple relatives to cancer I feel that the tragedy that this episode conveys or tries to convey is that the tragic nature of the cancer antagonist is the tragedy of the disease itself and how it affects its host, as well as in broader terms the nature of other auto-immune diseases. I cannot say that I particularly felt sympathy towards the cancer in the episode but I felt an extreme amount of sincerity in the his (its?) plight
@Neko141212
@Neko141212 5 лет назад
Yeah, I think that's what the show wanted. It wasn't about sympathy, but about understanding what's going. That cancer isn't 'evil', but instead an awful mistake that can ruin lives.

I'm a bit amazed that so few people see the parallel to how certain people behave IRL. What is it that cancer cells do? Grow fat by consuming the fruit of other cell's hard labor while contributing nothing themselves, which results in them literally eating the body to death. There are so many people IRL who have this exact parasitic behavior, and yet most people refuse to call them on their bullshit. To me, the cancer episode shows why you can't just accept destructive behavior even if those who do it have a real sad sob story. Because such acceptance inevitably leads to the destruction of so many important things.

As a biologist I honestly wanted to see more of a character arc for bacterial infections, instead of cancer... I feel like bacteria could play that role a lot better than cancer really. We have a gut microbiome, bacteria are basically part of us (we actually have more bacterial cells in our body than we have our own cells), and these aren't bad, these help us. So it's not a black and white thing for bacteria, even pathogens, since E. coli both helps us with our digestion but can be a very nasty infection. Out of all diseases, bacteria really aren't out there to kill us, the contrary, smart diseases keep their host alive because they need a host, deadly diseases come mostly from other animals and are therefore adapted to those animals, they're less adapted to us and they can kill us. A true human disease is leprosy for example, it's not a deadly disease, it's a very smart disease. I think it's a major flaw of cells at work that bacteria are the moustache twisting bad guys, every microbiologist can tell you the wonders of prokaryotes and phages, how they can cause much harm but also infinite good, both within our body and outside of it. I hope we'll get an episode where bacteria are good guys or at least neutral but harmful characters.

I've come to think of making Cancer sympathetic in the show as a narrative trick to symbolize the genetic damage that causes a cell to malfunction and become cancerous. Even though each cell has a singular purpose and goal, they all have sapient personalities that do make them unique from one another. A cell that becomes cancerous is just a regular cell that is genetically damaged to not self-terminate and thus causes further damage by spreading that malfunctioning information. This is translated narratively into the story turning genetic damage into psychological damage. He's given the sympathetic backstory that so many monsters have: Something that did not choose to be horrifying and misshapen but intends on taking revenge on the society that shunned him.

As someone who worked in the medical profession for a while. I would say in a few instances human society and the body can be a one to one. The body can and will attack itself preceiving itself as a threat, aka auto immune diseases. We can as people attack and harass others who are doing nothing wrong are trying to live their lives as best they can over really pretty things such as politics, beliefs etc. Another thing is not all of the body works in conjunction with one another for the purpose of helping one another. When you look at a city we have many different people with many different goals and aspirations filling many different jobs that individually dont look like they do much but as a whole keep the whole chain working together. Groups of cells creating tissues, groups of tissues creating organs, groups of organs creating systems, systems creating organisms. Like how we have people are individuals, groups of people can create communities, communities can create cities, districts, states, and nations (not completely accurate but you should get the point) There are many more examples that taken at face value where human societies mimics how the body can work. In the past we had people who grew up got a job with one company did the same thing for 30 years and retired because that's what they felt they needed to do for their families. So I really think your off base here. Mind you again not everything is a one to one but their are a lot of parallels. Edit: the whole beef thing is not as bad as some "health foods" that consume more water and space than cows do. There are plenty of "healthy" foods that are killing our planet faster than beef products. And my bringing this up is not to bash meat eaters over non meat eaters, as a whole we're both pretty terrible, we both have ups and down. Vegetable, and fruits spoil much faster than meat does, meat can lead to unhealthy lifestyles. On a whole our society is not on the verge of collapse, (though storing information purely on the internet is a terrible idea, this was something one of the founders of the internet said and I agree with him)and if it does we'll figure out a way to bounce back, as humans we're pretty good at that. My whole point is that. We are neither as a whole good or evil, lawful or chaotic, we are neutral. The world will not be overpopulated because we'll have slowed and stabilized our birth rates long before then. Greedy companies will not lead up to a dystopian future of waste cause those same companies concerned with profit are always trying to cut costs and resource consumption, and there will be people to try and check others who take things too far. When one thing swings to far left, right, up or down, there will be another side to try and return it to the center. It's a concept called homeostasis, which is what your body is always trying to do. This kind of grouping together to create larger entities happens on a cosmic scale too. Planets, moons, stars, comets create planetary/star systems, these systems create clusters those clusters create galaxies, and those galaxies create the universe. Everything is a mirror into its self.

you mean... something like enthropy? everything as a median until it reaches it's consumption and goes back to step 1 to restart it all, never too much, never too little. still, i don't think that's EXACTLY what he meant, in good part what he said applies to what you said too, it's just the conclusion that was different... and with that i think i agree more wiht you than him. cancer wasn't just a metaphor for some parts of society, but for society as whole, we can have benign cancer cells in our body after all(that's what beauty spots are right? please do correct me if i'm wrong) if we want to compare cancer to people, people like me would be benign cancer(ones that live off of others but that do no harm, and in cases can even do good albeit in a very reacharound way as someone who lives off my parents job and the state's invalidity pension doing nothing but sleep and stay on internet all day) while the cancer we all hate and despise would be criminals, drug addicts and pushers, radicalists like hitler and the leads of isis, that would be a better comparison, i mean think about it, how many people do you think ACTUALLY want to fight for isis, rather than having been forced by circumstances to fight for them and been radicalized into it? yet we still kill them ruthlessly if they're in a terrorist attack... and for good reason i'd say. assuming what little i know about the other kinds of tumors/cancers is correct, that feels like a better comparison to me. it's still sad af, but ironically, in this context people would feel worse for malign cancer than benign cancer.

Basically, Cancer is one of the places where the show's central metaphor totally breaks down. Real Cancer Cells are just mindless, destructive entities that do nothing but drain and ruin the body. The idea of a defective, mindless cell that can't do otherwise is not troubling in the slightest (at least not morally, ie most people don't find the fact that cancer cells don't have free will to be deeply troubling, only the actual effects of cancer), but the idea of a sentient creature, with free will, who nonetheless cannot do anything but destroy the world by existing, is absolutely horrifying.

I've watched very little of Cells at Work, HOWEVER, at the first episode the first thing I could think of was my favourite cartoon when growing up: "Once upon a time... Life". It's quite old (1986) and at times simplistic (meant for children), but it was very educational and entertaining (to the point of me rewatching it several times when it launched in Netflix). It's originally a piece of french animation and due to the time that has passed since it's first airing I wouldn't doubt much that the author of the manga (Cells at Work) has come in contact with it. I'm not going to accuse of plagiarism, the both are sufficiently different and separate in time so that it can't really apply, but I'd say that both are great in being educational and that I have a soft spot for that first animation.

This is an infinitely better analysis and review than the one that Anime America put out. Unfortunately, Robyn wasn't able to view the show objectively and thus failed to do a proper review, since she took the characterization of cancer personally. Which is unfortunate, since I normally really enjoy her reviews, but she allowed her biases to step in before she could objectively analyze the show. I particularly like your comparison between Cells at Work, Psychopass, and real life. Those shows demonstrate how a strictly utilitarian world might work and how individuals that don't necessarily fit in struggle to even survive and may even be eliminated by the system, which resonates in a gut wrenching way with the viewers.

@karasawnmckinley1173 5 лет назад
She gave her honest opinion about what she saw in the series and a lot of people attacked her for it. Yes this video was more in depth and positive, but its no excuse to trash other peoples opinions. You're terrible.

@@karasawnmckinley1173 The way cancer was portrayed in the anime was more or less accurate if cells were people. Robyn didn't like that it was accurate and would've preferred that they just butchered it and made it a cliche bad guy
@ProfessorTenebrae
@ProfessorTenebrae 5 лет назад
Karasawn McKinley I understand what you're saying but what Jay Hill is true. Cancer was given the viewpoint of a tragedy, not because we're supposed to sympathize with cancer, but more sympathize that it's no fault of the cell. Or the host of said cell. If you get ill from eating bad food, that's bacteria or viruses at work but the deal with cancer is upsetting because we rely on our bodies to protect and support us, and it _is_ a tragedy when it fails in such a significant way. The cancer is still destroyed (mostly), it's still clear that the body still does its job and there's nothing you can do and you shouldn't feel bad about it. The problem Robyn has is she seems to see it in cliche anime terms. She gets the idea that the writer wants us to feel sorry for actual, cancer. The malignant killer that strikes horror into the lives of thousands of people every day. That's not the point the writer is making, and if she read the manga in a little more depth, she'd have noticed how incredibly focused it is on how cancer is so frustrated at his lack of place. Cancer cells don't _know_ they're a problem. Unlike viruses and bacteria which are programmed to multiply and proliferate, the cancer cells are just the result of an error. Also stating, "Why is cancer hot?" what do you mean why is cancer hot? Is cancer hot? Are the cells hot? The point is that cancer looks almost exactly like other cells, with more facial detail since he's the main antagonist of the episode. That's talking about anime tropes on a whole, not the show. The biggest crime of hers is that she says the draw is _only_ the glorified violence against invaders, the skimpy outfit of the main character, and the cute loli platelets. This is just asinine. People watch because it's interesting, and a great take on human anatomy. White blood cells are insanely violent against invaders because they're raised with a one track mind to kill. Neutrophils IRL are so unbelievably drawn to this role that they have to be suicide once they finish attacking foreign objects so they don't damage the body around them, because they won't stop. The outfit of the main character is very intelligent, the cap she wears is a clear parallel to the shape of red blood cells, and she wears a light fitting uniform, suitable for a courier since that is what her job is! Are any of the female characters sporting tops that gloriously reveal their 'assets' to be seen? No! And platelets are depicted as lolis because they're *_tiny,_* do you have any idea how small a platelet is compared to a red blood cell? About 4 times smaller! And white blood cells are larger than red blood cells, hence why they're always taller than them! Skipping these details to just state "people just watch because of these common anime stereotypes" is just flat out laziness, it shows she didn't really watch the show or note the basic details. It's obvious what the show is about, and in so many other animes an average viewer asks, "Why is that like that?" and in this, it never occurred to her why. The other issue she has is how she states is "Who asked for this?" pretty clearly in the start, pretty much stating it's an anime version of Osmosis Jones or Cranium Command. This is reducing the show to its basic level, which is incredibly unfair. If you look at the doctor's notes on the show the writer is very obviously _incredibly_ passionate about human biology, taking the time and effort to research a heck of a lot for the sake of the details. Even referencing a recent study on how Streptococcus pneumoniae Invades Erythrocytes to sneak further into the body (used in episode 1 when the bacterium hides in what Red Blood Cell is carrying), and a lot of forms of art don't need someone to *ask* for it. It's about the passion they have for the medium. So many fans of anime as a whole complain today about how the industry has been brought to its basic level, how it churns out shitty anime to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and that while there are gems, you have to wade through a lot of shit to find them. Passion and care are what makes excellent art in all forms, whether it is film, cartoons, TV shows, music, or anime. She ends by saying it's a miss, just because of the cancer thing. That's personal bias right there. No-one is saying she *has* to like it, and while she does say "to each their own", she doesn't even have the decency to point out the good parts, the details and the work that went into it, which is not doing it justice. Judging the entire show on one episode is poor no matter what you say. I don't like Attack on Titan, a supremely popular show, but I have to admit it has its moments. By your argument, a person who might have had someone close to them killed by a serial killer has all right to yell how bad the show Dexter is, but is that the shows fault? Were the writers or the show responsible for that loss? No. Was Cells at Work responsible for the suffering of those who lost their loved ones to cancer? No. Does it make them bad shows? No! But saying it is because of that is bias. Heck, I lost my grandfather to skin cancer. It's just a show that exists for entertainment with the passion put into the details. Do you have to like it? No. But if you're in a position to affect whether people will give the show a chance, like Robyn, you have a reponsibility to be unbiased. And if don't even cover the good, you are biased. Unbiased means you give the good, and the bad.

I really used to love watching these growing up, it really was 'fun' learning and I still remember learning things from it way before I did in school or from modern science shows. "He was born imperfect and people didn't like" This is not a correct summarization of the beliefs of the characters. It's not him being imperfect that causes them to not like him (the main character, after all, is imperfect), it's because his survival necessitates the destruction of the world around him. It becomes an us vs. them scenario; either they kill him, and all other cells get to live, or they let him live and all cells and the body die. You shouldn't minimize the severity of the situation.

im not a big anime watcher, but the ones i do enjoy tend to be like this, something with a lot of heart.. no pun intended. after watching the cancer episode i really resonated with that heart this show just pours out with and a big part of that comes from the fact that im higher up on the autism spectrum and appear normal for all intents and purposes to the so called normal society. this feeling of not belonging because of forces outside of your control, being what you are and wanting to fit into that mold is fucking painful but man when it comes from fucking cancer and i can not only empathize but relate.. man that's a good show. because i understand those feelings, non verbal speech makes up about 75% of all communication and when you do not have the ability to read that massive chunk it can totally make you feel weird and misplaced. can't believe i'd actually relate to fucking cancer...

As a literal biologist and sociologist, this fascinates me. I'm amazed I haven't heard about it until just now. I think a lot of the impact with the cancer idea comes from the fact that cancer stands out from other conditions by basically being "too much life". You know, you have diseases who are "attackers", you have conditions that cause "degradation", basically every other threat to the body is something either trying to overpower it or wear it down in one way or another. But cancer, on the other hand, is simply this glitch where a basic essence of what we define as physical "life" just goes out of control and overwhelms itself. To me, it's similar to how we are made of mostly water, yet we can be poisoned to death by an overabundance of water. I guess what I'm saying is, even the things we value the most can go wrong sometimes, and even the things we tend to hate can have a positive purpose every now and then. This is a dynamic I wish more fiction would touch on, and I'm glad to see it represented in this way in particular. :D

Ozzy and had politics Ozzy and Drix was the perfect balance between cells at work and inside out . your body talks to you all your urgeses cravings many ways brain does fontion as a democracy . unless a stubborn person then it's a dictatorship . But cells are more you United culture. From Inside Out . How offten does this show go into the brain or mind . Accidents like white blood cells striking nerves going after germs . Some body do go into civil war organs and cells compete like doing seagures fat cell banks can get greedy and embessal store calories away from you cells so your cell call and demand you eat more making you fat . What he discribed at the end was cancer it in episode most crush Sprimin they didn't come out and say it was cancer but look that guy . And red blood cells really are masses of protiens compared to other cells

I know that a lot of people said that they'd boycott the show since it portrayed cancer in such a way. As a cancer survivor myself plus living with a father who battled cancer for 18 years before he lost, I actually would prefer if they took a more tragic angle. I'd be a lot more offended if they portrayed him as a comedic Saturday morning cartoon villain. I feel like the mangaka knew what a serious topic cancer was and acted accordingly.

Edutainment? Ok, I'll toss one out: Mythbusters! Mythbusters and the lesser known Popular Mechanics for Kids, both shows about explaining how the world around us works in a cool and accessible way, were hugely influential on who I am today. The hero Bill Nye is to some is the hero that Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman (along with Grant Imahara, Kari Byron and Tori Bellachi) are to me. And they're all artists! Just like me (kind of; illustration and graphic design vs Special fx for film). A team of special effects artists taking on science advocacy taught me that art and science are not a hard dichotomy, that you can have both. They also got me interested in the process of filmmaking, which is hugely important as a writer and comic artist. Also, School House Rock. I still play the songs for multiplying threes and fives in my head when I'm doing math. _Three is a magic number~_ EDIT: ok, so I wasn't as done rambling about Mythbusters as I thought I was. Adam Savage? He's a nerd just like me, a guy old enough to be my dad who's the kind of adult who constantly takes utter (if occasionally destructive) delight in the world around them. I looked at that as a kid and decided then and there "that's the kind of adult I want to be". And he cosplays! He's infamous for cosplaying incognito at Comic Con! I highly recommend his TED Talk vid, "My Love Letter to Cosplay". Honestly, he only had to start out how he found joy and connection through cosplay and crafting with "I had a lonely childhood" for me to, right hand to god, almost burst into tears in the graphic design lab. He's my hero, honestly.

@noskalborg723

how can we save the planet when we can't save ourselves or even grow a garden? Colony Colapse Disorder is more man made of a phenomena then Global warming, but it gets ignored because it is harder to exploit for profit. When the world ends, the planet will burn, the Bible says so in many places. Our Magnetic poles are in the process of flipping, thereby reducing our magnetosphere, and soon a wayward solar Corona will be a furnace instead of a lightshow. Long Story short, get over global Warming and do your part to reduce waste, maintain sustainability, and make the world a little greener(with plants).

The cancer arch brought up so many mixed feelings for me. It worked incredibly well to get the sympathies going for the cancer cell, and brought up areas I paralleled them in my own life, mainly with the career path option. but also I felt a great amount of unease because, im sympathizing with cancer. the thing that killed my grandma, the thing that nearly killed my aunt and I thank God she is still in remission to this day. So seeing a part of myself in the method of death and pain that affected my loved ones is kinda resonating like the thoughts of "Im hurting people by being myself" and being gay in a catholic family, i've felt that a fair bit. I love this show and pretty much all its doing, but the heavy philosophical stuff is really throwing me into discomfort, which i guess can be a good thing depending on how i take it. the one thing i do realize though, is that anyone that cosplays as Cancer better be ready for some mixed emotions and potential negative outbursts from those that had to deal with it first or second hand.

Wakaru Shinryounaika (Comical Psychosomatic Medicine) is an edutainment anime about a psychologist and his nurse explaining different mental illnesses and disorders in a lighthearted but pretty clear way. The episodes are pretty short, though. And it’s not as good as Cells at Work, but I find it pretty nice to see a show that tackles mental health in an educational and a (despite being a comedy) respectful note. (They also troll you by putting sexy big breasted girls in the op and then being like *sike bitch* right after in the first ep)
