Nothing has changed (except the level of undress). Growing up in the 70s, boys would have posters of football teams and Bob Marley (or other bands).Girls would have posters of David Cassidy or Donny Osmond. These days girls will have bare chested posters of Harry Styles. Who objectifies who?

The endorphin rush when I fixed my first washing machine or dishwasher was tangible. Same with my first DIY project. And no, this wasn’t a social construct as at the time I had no one to impress, I lived alone. It tapped in to something deeply imprinted into my biology that this was what I needed to do. That sort of deep instinct isn’t something that is just passed on by culture.

I had superb counselling a few years ago for a case of acute depression. I really wish I remember his name because he was an older bloke, and his approach was simple. a) get patient to explain a problem b) repeat an understanding of that problem with different wording so that the patients feels listened to and understood c) ask patient if they have any ideas how to solve or move passed that problem d) if they do have an idea, celebrate that idea and demonstrate to the patient that not only did they come up with a solution themselves but they should feel proud of that approach and keep trying e) if they have a bad idea or no idea, work with them and try to get them to come to the solution themselves or the realisation themselves. Ask questions to guide them to the right answer.

@@Hana-su7zg Lol what a great response, I thought you were taking the piss at first, too much internet correspondence! For context, dad was a bricklayer from the 70s, and back then they did everything, plumbing, electrics and so on. I looked at listened. I am 5ft 2inches, and small build with chronic physical health issues. So, if I can do it, most people can. But there was a film called The Edge in which Anthony Hopkins says, "What one man can do, another man can do." I honestly believe that. I have researched online and used RU-vid tutorials a lot, but nowadays things like plumbing are done with flexi push fit joints and things like that. I can't see the problem with giving it a go, then calling someone if it proves beyond me. You will get people saying that tradesmen don't want to follow peoples DIY and fix their mistakes, but it's your home and your decision if you want to try it. I've done some small electric works and called my electrician to check and sign it off. I wouldn't touch any major electric works but light switches and blanking off I've done. It saves a lot of money, and feels great.

Scenario: it’s pissing it down with rain but the tent’s blowing down, or something needs fixing, or there’s a scary shadow out in the woods, 99% of the time men are called on to sort it out without flapping around and making the situation worse for everyone. I’ve also seen a few women rise to these occasions but they are very rare. Just saying how I’ve seen it.

There was a young man, only about 19 years old and he worked at Ford in Daggerham, in the seat manufacturing area. Nearly all women in there. I've seen women like that. Women in their 40s losing their minds around a 19 year old boy. Gosh, can't you see he could be your son? I don't even have children myself and I have zero sexual interest in a young boy. On the other hand it's not exactly the same as men acting like that towards a young girl. The worst those women can do is to make the boy feel uneasy. Occasionally there might be one that will try to seduce him. But the young man won't normally be in any real danger of physical harm by middle aged women.

The point on crying is interesting. A therapist I went to once explained that whilst a lot of male crying is a genuine expression and outlet for frustration, grief and all that, and sometimes women have this too, a lot of female tears is performative as they seek assistance from the group. And importantly, this is mostly subconscious and isn’t being used as a weapon in most cases. Overall it shows that men value self reliance as often they are the only one that people turn to when things go bad, and so they NEED to grow up to be self reliant, women value the support of the group of other females, and so have evolved mechanisms to activate that support. Thus, as my therapist concluded, men and women are NOT the same despite what some crazy lunatic Marxists would have you believe, and we need different types and modes of support.

Here's mine: my dad, a proper bloke, trawlerman come tradesmen, now retired, came back from Specsavers and couldn't see through his new glasses. After a chat, he explained, really proudly, that every appointment, he looks at the plaque on the wall and memorizes the last line of letters, and pretends he can read them. He then spends the rest of the time trying to figure out what the correct answers are because he wants to pass the test! Blokey or just mental, I'm never sure.

I've been thinking that the Sopranos style slap on the back and vague hug is a recent import into this country. Blokes of my age ( I'm not a bloke btw) never did that sort of thing.

The difference between British and American men is that the former are mostly “cavalier” down there, and Americans are “round top”. Shitty deal for the latter, but in the USA, everything is up for sale; even body parts.

btw previous to this ad campaign I used Gillette exclusively for 30 years. Haven't used it since this ad was aired ... and I will NEVER EVER use ANY Gillette product again as long as I live.

I've been called out for not dealing with things early enough. People could see I wasn't going to get something done. I didn't. And it frustrated them that I seemed to just let it happen. That's not what it was tho. I had the highest intentions to get it done and yeah maybe I do bite off more than I can chew but without that tension in the system I won't make it as far as I did. When people see me do something good they are like wow... How... And in truth it's because I was aiming to do something 5x as good, and this is where I landed. This feels like the same vibe Geoff hits when saying he doesn't want to feel weak in counselling. If you start there then you have already given up on being your best. Building from nothing is for some. Aiming for the moon and still landing in the stars is for others.

18:15 Cars in the UK don't have spare tires (tyres?) any more? Thankfully, we still have them in the US. I had to change the tire on my Honda a few weeks ago.

My family always sing this at get togethers, I grew up with it, and its incredibly sad. The family are largely West Ham supporters, but not exclusively! I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" I'm forever blowing bubbles, Pretty bubbles in the air, They fly so high, Nearly reach the sky, Then like my dreams They fade and die. Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere, I'm forever blowing bubbles, Pretty bubbles in the air. When shadows creep, When I'm asleep, To lands of hope I stray! I'm forever blowing bubbles, Pretty bubbles in the air, They fly so high, Nearly reach the sky, Then like my dreams They fade and die. Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere, I'm forever blowing bubbles, Pretty bubbles in the air.

You talked about physicality...men used to touch each other. An arm around the shoulder, or a couple boys lying next to each other in the grass, but now, none of that is permitted, because you're automatically labeled as gay. There's no room for simple, everyday touch when appropriate, because if you do, it comes with a whole host of baggage that gets thrown upon you. Rumors, suspicions, questions.

I always make sure there’s a spare tire in my car and everything needed to change it. I’ve changed my tire in freezing rain in winter weather. It’s not that difficult with the right tools. I have to because I deliver medical supplies and the AAA (American Automobile Association) often takes too long to respond.

I went to the same high school as Geoff, 10 yrs earlier, if you read this Geoff, I was in Crusaders house. I bet that was expunged by the time you were there (political reasons, sigh), and I worked for BT like his old man, so I have a strange affinity with him. I would like to say though, I've never done therapy (man up bruv, lol) and I've only cried 3 times in my life, when my mum, dad and sister died.

Interesting discussion. Thank you. There seems to be blindness around Starmer on the part of the participants in this interview. He is not meant to be a person with ideas and policies. His job always was not to be Corbyn, to purge the party of Corbynites, ensure there is no opposition to the Tories in Parliament, tide the Tories over to the next election and to be the Blue Labour PM if the Tories don’t win the election. As such, Starmer is doing his job well. Corbyn was dished through a concerted campaign of lies around him being anti-Semitic and his proposal for negotiating a Brexit leaving package combined with a referendum on its acceptance.
