Steady rhythm and control over dynamics.
Being intentional, and making artistic choices about what we're creating.
I try to pin down buzzwords and catchphrases like "tone is in the hands" - what specifically do we mean by that?

Better than anyone, Eric, you teach me HOW to think about guitar (and music) instead of just what to do.

I try! I really do. People often ask “what should I be working on?” To me, it doesn’t matter. As long as we GO SLOW AND PRETTY.

My _practice_ has gotten so much better from lessons like this, Eric. It’s so much more enjoyable to work on improvement when my head is in a better place. Lots of instructors teaching licks and scales, etc. I can get that anywhere. I come here for lessons because it’s also about _how_ I play, _why_ I play, and most importantly, it’s about _play_. You remind me of how fun it should be, to have fun, and take the practice seriously, but not my relative goodness or badness. I just play now, because my practice is play. Things are always better when we’re not looking for reasons to beat ourselves up. ✌️😌🎸

Dude, I just spent my Friday evening (not eating pizza but... ) watching your guitar philosophy videos and now I'm going to try to be more excellent to myself and others. I'm a big fan of your TrueFire CAGED course, and now I'm thinking I should check out your Patreon and work my way up to booking a private lesson with you. Your philosophy is priceless! Thanks for doing what you're doing!

I like the way you have addressed melody and feel, there are so many who think shredding is the way to go, I personally think after a while shredding all starts to sound the same. Good for you, I really enjoy your tutorials.

I get it - it’s actually easier to mentally check out, and just run scales as fast as you can. It’s much harder to leave to space, and put meaning into what we do!

This lesson fits perfectly with the Sigur Ros concert I saw last night in LA. No solos by any instrument, just slow to mid-tempo grooves with lots of breath from each instrument/note/chord. Also, I had loved Eric's Bennie and the Jets arrangement (it was a challenge to learn). These Elton arrangements are also inspiring. Patreon'd and True Fire'd.

That bit at 4:00 where you try to play badly reminds me of Julian Lage who tends to play staccato a lot and drifts in the tempo. And his playing is very tasty! He knows exactly what he’s doing and why. I guess that’s the point.

The most frustrating thing about getting good feel is that when I'm really feeling it and getting in the moment/music, I don't look as cool on stage. Priorities.
@EricHaugenGuitar

Hence "guitar face" - it always frustrates me that the general public thinks we make those faces on purpose. We can't help it!
@misterknightowlandco

Step one for good feel… feeling good. You can have all the technique in the world and know what you’re doing, but if your phoning it in cuz you don’t want to be there or aren’t in the right headspace to play… people will know it and feel it too. I tell my buddies I play with that you either get lost in it or just get lost. I’m in my late 30’s with kids ain’t got time for people who don’t want to be there. Great video as always.

Not really, the most Important thing about feeling vibration Is the source frequency. I.e why you're more likely to feel the vibrations of an unplugged electric bass, versus an unplugged electric guitar. In the case of basses, they're more easily felt bc lower frequencies are literally more powerful than higher frequencies. Secondarily Is the object (In this case the strings) that the vibrating force Is attached to. I.e why acoustic guitars are louder than electrics. Just saying I'm dubious about neck-through guitars making you feel the notes more. While there's a possible difference, there's probably not a noticeable one noticeable one. Cheers!
@smelltheglove2038
@smelltheglove2038 2 года назад
@@vasilias2230 I’m not sure you’ve ever played one. There is a world of fucking difference. Every one of the many, many, firebirds Ive ever played has done it. It’s something I haven’t felt in any other guitar. It has to do with the bridge, nut and tuners all being attached to the same piece of wood.
@vasilias2230
@vasilias2230 2 года назад
@@smelltheglove2038 I can't prove/disprove your personal experience. I was pointing out purely from a Physics point of view. Again while there may be some difference I'm dubious about their being a large resonant difference between other guitars. Do you hold the same view with other Gibsons?

4:01 - 4:10 Yeah that's me at the moment. It's exaggerated, but that's what time away from the instrument and the stress of middle-age responsibilities can do to a musician. Back to open chords and no funny business for a week or two. You just got a new Patron, mate :) Figured it was about time!
