The Curse of Oak Island is a multi-season reality television that follows Lagina brothers Rick and Marty as they try to solve the mystery of Oak Island, one of Western Hemisphere's most intriguing mysteries. The brothers, like many before them, are in search of a hidden trove that is believed to have been buried on the Oak Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, almost 200 years ago. This trove often referred to as the Money Pit, is believed to be many things -- pirate treasure, Holy Grail, Shakespearean manuscripts and treasures hidden by the Knights templar. The Lagina brothers first read about the treasure trove on the island in a 1965 issue of the Reader's digest and became obsessed with the treasure. They decided to buy a small share in Oak Island Tours, which owns most of the island.
In a total of 7 seasons, there are quite a few facts that fans don't know about The Curse of Oak Island. The reality series follows a team of treasure hunters, led by Marty and Rick Lagina, in their quest for the truth behind the mystery of Oak Island, Southern Nova Scotia, Canada.
The fascinating quest - which began with Marty and Rick much before it was converted into a show - entails stories surrounding the island, with the team speculating what is true and what is myth or conjecture as the Laginas try to zero in on the treasure. The Curse of Oak Island was first aired on January 5, 2014, and it is currently in its seventh season, which ended on April 28, 2020. Apart from the Lagina Brothers, the core cast features Dan Blankenship, Dave Blankenship, and Craig Tester.
Much like any other show, there's so much more happening with the cast of The Curse of Oak Island than what meets the eye. And the 57-hectare Oak Island's mysterious history and supposed curse add more intrigue to the interesting happenings beyond what we see on the screen. Let's go ahead and talk about some interesting facts that fans don't know about The Curse of Oak Island.

I tune in now and then for more of the "best of" BS, but I lost interest when season two started out with a re-time-stamped and dated season one. Leave it to the discovery channel to shuffle content around, make something out of absolutely nothing, and generally screw things up in the name of the almighty dollar when there's really nothing going on there yet. ...and I first heard about this in 1959, in grade school. I'm sure we'll hear about it when they actually DO find it.

I had no idea that Marty was that wealthy, during the start of the series i think they mentioned they had accumulated a few million dollars after a life time to be used for the excavation. I assumed initially the money would eventually run out, which is why they had to make cuts to reduce the costs. But if Marty has a net worth of 40-100 million, they were never in any danger. And the money they earn from the show itself could fund this project indefinitely.

The island is recorded in papers in the British Library as being the home of a ship breaking, ship building business, going back many generations and small subsistence farming. It is no surprise that they keep finding tools and detritus related to both industries. It also perfectly explains traces of lost wharfs etc. It is also understandable that military finds are there, given they would have used the ship building services and camped there. The actual treasure being found is the native archaeology, and it is a travesty that the Canadian government allow them to destroy that in search of well documented European heritage, and a myth. The techniques used on the show are appalling. A full LiDAR scan, magnetometer survey, resistivity survey then test trenching and box pits would be the best method, what they are doing should be a crime. Having said that, the fact that they keep sinking bore holes and cans into an area of the island that has been disturbed by wholesale destructive digging over generations is hilarious. They keep finding the wood, boots, tools etc of the previous destruction, all mixed up with no clear stratigraphy and plotting their finds onto maps. It’s futile. But hey, let’s all pretend that wood they pull up has never been dug up, backfilled and dug up again before, eh? Many years ago when I was reading for a postgrad in archaeology I sent the brothers a research paper with all the shipbuilding evidence, the location of lime kilns and other things, explaining the wood structures in the sea bed and more. I never got a reply. And I know others have reached out to them to offer archaeological support and research too, but they prefer all the knights Templar and other silly myths people bring to the show, because it’s just that, a show.

I read the original Readers Digest article back in 1965 also. It was interesting but didn't set me out on a quest. I wonder if this led the Lagina Brothers to be successful in business to then be able to fulfill their obsession. I've been interested in this thing longer than I thought as my father mentioned it in the 60's to me as a kid. I guess he read about it in readers digest. I remember him describing the tide trap and wood that blocked the way and how gold was found on the drill bit. It must be the same place I imagine. Now knowing a bit more it seems to be a deliberate trap that is accentuated by the stone found that said the treasure was a further 40' down which tripped off the water trap. Devious and cunning are words that come to mind. Now with the millions made from the series it seems that we have modern day pirates sitting around a table laden with booty! It seems they only want to hear what their take on things are. I have sent a message a year ago about the triangular swamp area. I have a nautical background and I am more than familiar with the careening of ships hulls. I mentioned how a ship could have been hauled in to that area at high (spring) tide the once in the entry would have been sealed at low tide, thus allowing the ship to be tilted on its side and the hull repaired and careened ( fouling such as barnacles removed. Presence of oak planking in the swamp more than confirms repairs being done. There would never have been a ship sunk in the swamp as it just isn’t deep enough, a ship entering during a spring tide would only need some 8ft - 10ft of depth in order to get into the area. More than 30ft depth is needed to sink a ship in there and that is not attainable. To date (over a year) I am still awaiting a response from ‘the team’. I expect I will never get my response.

Well, I’d like to know. I’m watching this video obviously, but would like to know if you’ve come across any scholarly literature on this fascinating subject. History and mysteries combined is fascinating to me. But, ultimately, I’m interested in knowing facts not a reality TV spin on the curse.
@homepage1566
@homepage1566 4 года назад
Hi Lori, unfortunately the facts surrounding this mystery are scant. I think a lot of what is being shown stretches from minor fact through informed hypothesis all the way to hare brained ideas. But a couple of things stand out. One is the similarities of the Mi’kmaq flag and that of the Knights Templar, the story being, by way of the Mi’kmaq that their flag was given to them by people who came to the region. The second is that the swamp is a key. As I mentioned sailing ships of old needed to be careened and repaired to maintain seaworthiness. The swamp, in my opinion was where the repairs were done. There is, I feel no mysticism in this apart from just who the people who came to Oak Island were. The web being woven has plainly become too tangled and at times becomes ridiculous. The answer lies in a better study of Maritime History and determinations of human settlement in the New World. The is so little empirical data that a lot of really off the wall theories are coming forth. I sent them my 2 cents worth and never got a response. Perhaps I may have come too close to the truth about the swamp (being used for careening) which didn’t fit with their need to continue spinning their tangled web of sometimes off the wall ideas.

The amount of work put into tunneling well below the surface makes the place significant, but the contents may well have been moved. In one episode the show identified a Knights Templar "fort" in degraded condition on private land about 50 miles from Oak Island. That lead seemingly died on the vine for unknown reasons while Templar connections continue to this day to be propounded, including recognition of a noteworthy Masonic presence in the area. The idea that a significant cache of valuables remains underground on the island in my mind is a conjecture. However, the seemingly complex history of the island is fascinating and makes for an interesting puzzle. I am not inclined to see things nefariously though there are times I think the show gets a bit vainglorious. When it does I go ugh, but it hasn't stopped me from watching. That said I prefer to take a balanced approach to the show, enjoying it regardless of any litmus test that can be made for any of the motivations of any of the actors.

The only 'treasure' of value on Oak Island is not in the 'Money Pit'. It is the 'Cash Cow' that keeps getting milked season after season. 9 years later, and many stopped watching show. Every week it's another 'Breakthrough Discovery' only to see something not related to show in any way. Example: AMAZING BREAKTHROUGH... they found Air on Oak Island. It is believed to be the same Air pirates breathed in the 1700's. They also found mud that was touched by a 'pirate' when he was digging a latrine.

I don't want to be a pessimist, it seems unlikely they will find much left since they've already indicated at least 3 people who shopped even often for their needs/wants in town(s) on the mainland: 1 or 2 of the 1795 discoverers that got whole thing started, namely the McGinnis Brothers, Samuel Ball, and just recently and later owner of many lots in the 19th Century who's name I can't recall, using old Spanish coins or other old foreign denominated (none of which would in today markets be useful in exchange for goods or services yet obviously was still so back then) gold, silver coins or valuables not in common current contemporary circulation to pay for these purchases. Moreover, if there were any deposits of priceless religious or cultural artifacts, regardless from which one or more potential cultures, or written documents (even possibly treated in mercury yet perhaps to a lesser extent, but still obviously seriously toxic, nonetheless), etc. other than the possible exception of crown or other nobel jewels, now after numerous sea flooding events and worse collapse cave-ins into random distribution(s) of debris; the likelihood of any such formerly historical important item(s) being anything greater than just that "debris" of more or less damaged beyond hope of repair if even recognisable identification can be made, yet still in fact even in perfect condition as even David Blankenship would have to disapointingly concede as "unspendable" bound instead for a museum for future generations posterity! IMO the area was a dry-dock to repair the privateer and pirate ships back when they couldn't go to legal ports. The 5 box drains would drain the water to an excavated underground cavern to get the water level low enough so hulls could be repaired. The vertical shaft had platforms every 10 feet so the fill would not slide down and fill up the excavated area. Really, think about it; no one is going to bury a valuable treasure 150 feet in the ground. Back then you spent your treasure quickly because life was short.

Yeah I look at the money pit as nothing more than just an underwater drainage system. As it would take a lot of people do even dig a grave back in the 1600's. And like said. Pirates couldn't have ships fixed at any legit port. So a port for only pirate vessels would be more logical. Then by the 1700's. The British would repurpose that port for military operations.

@@mr.willywinker4u849 if there ever was one. And to think, if there was such a treasure, the pirates themselves most likely wouldn't just dump it into a 150 foot deep pit. Also it would be too far fetched to deduce that by the 1600's Oak Island wasn't already established by other cultures. One fact is that Oak Island is in Nova Scotia, in fact the same area of the Vikings landings and colonization of areas of Canada. The Vikings were masters of navigation and sea faring ways. Wouldn't be to hard to believe Oak Island was already a sea port established by the Viking/Scottish descendents. Or other European people's.

I vaguely remember reading the readers digest article, way back in the day. I've watched since the start. I don't know why I still keep watching. They rarely find anything really interesting to average person. The speculation they do about most of their "finds" is ludicrous. About the legend. Dan spent his life looking for the treasure. Others before him have done the same, so why don't any of them qualify as the last" must die" person? . In the 2 years since this was recorded, they made a couple of significant archaeological finds and now the government has locked down the whole island, except for the immediate money pit area. Now they have to get permits. Typical bureaucratic BS. You have these 2 money bags who are willing to throw more money into the pit doing archaeological quality excavation and now they have to jump through all sorts of hoops. If the province had a clue they would fast track all requests. Let the brothers pay for archaeologists to do digs where ever they ask to. Make permitting simple and FAST, just include requirement to ensure the digs are up to standard. No one else is going to pay. It's a great make work project for archaeologists.

Now there was a ring from the treasure chest that was made for a exceptionally large finger that wound up in the hands of Rudy Giuliani in new york, traded to him for some legal work by the one who found the treasure chest, rudy still wears that ring to this day. The treasure chest was transported to the war room by the finder them marty and rick were called to be there then in the war room the chest was opened carefully to not damage the chest or the old pad lock that was still on it.
