There is no escaping the fact that English is the language of commerce, and there is no shame in embracing it.

Teaching the "indios" Spanish wasn't the goal of the Spanish empire until much later in their rule when their liason for managing the islands, Mexico, became independent and Madrid lost their Acapulco hub. This is why the Spanish grammar rules were lost to time and what words did survive were absorbed into the local languages instead of existing as a separate language. Meanwhile teaching english was one of the US's primary objectives from day 1 of power and they had the resources to make it happen. Yet even then Spanish remained a national language until much later when it was dropped because it fell out of use.

The various ethnic groups were not united prior to the Spanish.

They were always disunited and unstrustful of each other and "unpatriotic" because there wasn't even a united Philippines back then. The only reason the islands were "united" in the first place was because of colonial powers needing to put SOME sort of unity in their "assets" to make management easier. At least the hodgepodge mess that was the Holy Roman Empire was sort of united because they had a common language that they could use to get some headway. We didn't even have that.

If I remember correctly, there really wasn't such a thing as a "Filipino last name". Before the Spaniards came, our ancestors' local culture were mainly based from either Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, etc. depending on your location. Which culture and religion would you pick?

Manila has pockets of prosperity and is a microcosm of the rest of the country. It is a cesspool because of poor city planning and squatters. The Philippines used to be heavily indebted and is currently experiencing more than decade of economic growth. Overpopulation and it's ancillary issues are a concern. I think the government should do more to accelerate economic diversification.

@@rendelldraw Those habits that i've mentioned have strongly impacted the present day Filipino character and the Philippines society thats why at the present, the Philippines is lagging at any terms of progress and development compared to other Asian countries.
