Hey everyone!! For those of you who are fluent and KNOW you are fluent and FEEL fluent, please tell us what it feels like in the comments. When did you realize you were fluent? How did you realize? If you're not fluent... tell us how you know that. And, just a reminder... some of you ARE fluent, you just don't realize it yet. Hopefully my videos are helpful and guiding you to fluency and confidence, because that's what I want for you

I can talk about things that I know fluently and express them but when it comes to thinking (what would you do... what if... kind of things) it gets hard to think and speak. Half fluent? 😀

don't lose the opportunity to speak with your self, i get to talk almost fluent cuz i do that for a long time when i get only, awlays when I'm in the bus tripping, driving my car and anytime i speak with by myself, i tink this the only way if you wanna be fluent in English, sure you need to make others things but to speak lonely this is the way.

For me, the moment I realized I was fluent was one day sitting on a train I overheard two English speakers talking to the revisor and she couldn't understand them at all, so I stepped up and said I spoke English. The revisor was relieved, and I adopted the role of a translator between her and those passengers. It wasn't a conversation, maybe I spoke for two minutes or less, but being able to confidently say I speak English was something I really wanted to do for the longest time and even though I felt nervous I decided to do it anyway and ended up helping those people understand each other. It felt so good!

That's cool, but be careful to not get too much used to listen only people that speaks in the same way she does, because if you bump into a person that speaks not as clear as she does, you might get stuck. So, it's always good tolisten to other accents and people.

I was leaving France to return to the states after my year abroad. There was a group of French students on their way to some city in the U.S. for a summer exchange program. I was sort of bracing for my own form of culture shock going back, so I started talking to them about some of the differences between France and the U.S. Finally, one of the students asked me (in French), "How is it that you know so much about the United States?" When I told them I was from Texas, they were (as the Irish say) gobsmacked. For me, that was the greatest validation of my proficiency.

It happened to me about 2 months ago in the new job that I started. I had to speak with people from Holland there was an old guy who told me "your english is good because I can understand what you say and you understand what I say" I felt very good because I was speaking english fluenty. We were speaking for about 20 minutes about many things. But it took me 4 years practicing, listening, reading and speaking

Hi, Stefanie, many thanks for your incredible videos about learning English. I've watched all the videos on your RU-vid channel in the last a few weeks and it's like finally someone understands my feelings when speaking English. My native language is Chinese and I've lived in Scotland for a few years. I felt so frustrated because I barely understood the English of the local people, so I seldom participated in local activities, simply because I didn't want to be like an idiot in other people's eyes. I've already given up improving my English, thinking as long as it's enough for my work. It is your video on RU-vid that gives me the passion I've lost about improving my English, thank you so much for sharing all this with us. Watching your video is like talking to a good friend who can understand you and inspire you. Looking forward to more videos like this and all the best to your career as an English coach. Thanks again.

Hey Stefane!! To me Fluency feels like Freedom! I’ve been studying English for a long time but I just really felt confident and fluent when I challenged myself and started talking to natives. Nowadays it’s pretty easy to get in touch with native speakers through many apps like italki or cambly. Well, it really transformed my english and I strongly recommend it to everyone. 😀

I'm from Brazil, so my first language is Portuguese, but I'm fluent in both English and Spanish. Being fluent in a foreign language, for me, means be able to have a conversation with a native speaker, understand and be understood. Of course, sometimes I lack confidence. I get stuck and I make mistakes, but I don't mind about it. If you want to become fluent in a foreign language, you can't be shy or afraid of making mistakes, it's the ONLY way to learn, by making mistakes! I speak English with native speakers every day, 30 minutes each time and it makes me feel good and happy because when I was a teenager, it was one of my dreams. I know I'm fluent in English because native speakers tell me and it provides me the will to go on.

I'm not sure if I already fluent. That's not so easy to evaluate and I guess I'm rather critic about myself. However, if be able to talk during 2,3,4 hour along is fluency, so I reckon I'm almost there. A few months ago I was a little afraid to speak. I participated in your fluency breackthough challenge on Instagram and continue to talk to people who I met there. As a result I believe I'm not freezing anymore, so I'd like to thank you for that opportunity. Thanks Stefanie. It was really great!

Fluency for me is to be able to listen, read, speak (most importantly) and write. I produce sentences very easy, on the flip side it can be challenging sometimes and stressful because you feel like you want to be as fluent as the native speaker of that language. You want to produce sentences like them, you want to comprehend like them, you want to read like them, you want to write like them and talk like them. I feel great about being fluent, nobody will ever know everything about any language but if they keep moving forward with the language they're learning, they'll come off as great as in their first language.

Hi Stefanie. I just wanted to add something to what you said. The human mind has two main intelligences, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. When we are at the beginning of learning something, we have it on our conscious mind. But through repetition, we can have it on our subconsious mind and that's when we start doing it effortlessly. The subconscious mind is like autopilot. Take for example driving. When we are learning how to drive, we notice everything, rearview mirror, handbrake, gearshift and so on. We are using our conscious mind. But after a while say 2 or 3 months, we're gonna be able to drive from our subconsious mind and that would be super easy for us and we could do other things like talking on the phone because we are at the autopilot phase. Language is one of the things that needs to be on our subconscious mind and only then we will be able to speak without thinking about grammar.

I felt a breakthrough (not sure if I can call it “fluency realization”) once at the airport. I missed a connecting flight due to a delay in the previous flight, with the same airline btw, so the thing is, that I had another flight waiting for me afterwards and obviously I was about to miss it as well. So, I went to the counter and I just opened my mouth and I start speaking English, I complained, I asked to talk about with the manager, I ask for a hotel room (yes, I had to stay that night in that city), and so on. And once I finished and I calmed down, I asked myself “what was that?” I felt so good, I didn’t even think about what words I was using, I didn’t think about my accent, I didn’t care about anything, I just spoke my thoughts 🥳🥳🥳

I guess when we watch our steps way too much we stumble. When you were put in a situation where all you could think of was how to complain, at that point you could break loose from that tie and your words and phrases just came out of your mouth smoothly.

Speak Spanish With Paula That was a pretty inspiring story. Honestly that motivated me a lot, we tend to have obsession with the perfection when it comes to speaking English, well that’s not true. Just like you, English is my second language too & honestly it’s not an easy process to learn a different language however sometimes we need to trust on ourselves & speak out without thinking of consequences just like Paula did. Always try to be perfect will push you back in the first place. Think of all those achievements you’ve gained in your life, did it just happened like magic or you went through lots of tries & failures ? I think we should not afraid of making mistakes, it’s okey to make mistakes but you gotta have a spirit to learn from your mistakes. There isn’t any shortcut way to become fluent but to go through number of mistakes that teach you along your way to the accomplishment. Yet i need to make a confession i’m still trying to get fluent in English & i know that i have a long way ahead of me.

I have realized that I am another person when I am speaking in English, I think it happens because I don't like speaking in the way I speak Spanish and because I like imitating how Americans speak. Also, when I want to send a long audio on whatsapp I almost always want to record it two or three more times, even in my own language; lack of confidence haha. I know my weaknesses, and I don't think I am close intermediate, but I am still working on it; one day I will be fluent in English, I really love that language. Good luck to all English learners.

Stefanie, thank you so much, I enjoy a lot your tips and your videos. They are really useful for me in my English learning journey. I've already felt some of the feelings you said in this video. I feel I'm not fluent, but I realized there were some moments that the English flew out and I talked some words I thought I never saw before. These moments are mindblowing and we can only describe this sensation if we've already felt it before. It gives me hope to continue trying.

Renan Oliveira Hey Renan, Just like you & many others who are the subscribers of this channel, I’m also the one of the students & I’ve been practicing it with all my heart to get fluent some day. Though I’ve been looking for someone who would like to get connected in whatsapp to do speaking practice with me. If you find it interesting way to learn English then let me know. We could discuss about it & get into a constructive conclusion.

Effortless!! This is the word I was always looking for!!! Recently I had a chance to have conversation with native English speaker and she asked me that why you’re still learning English because she thinks I’m good enough to speak in English and my English is understandable. But that’s not my expected fluency! I still need so much effort to speak in English thinking about structure, grammar, and suitable words. At that time, I couldn’t explain my thought about fluency well to her. That’s again because I was not fluent enough. Now my goal is to be able to speak “effortlessly”!

Some time l feel that my english could be better... but the true is that we never stop learning. I have spent y whole life trying to learn english because i'm very lazy and slow to read and when l watch english tv with caption, l almost ever lose the focus in the items. So if l could master the lenguaje I will no longer read the subtitles. 😎

Reaching fluency in English demands effort and determination. Also, you need to know that we will always learn from our mistakes. It's impossible to better understand English without making any mistakes. In my experience, I've spent 9 years brushing up on my English skills. Learning a languange is a habit. I immerse myself in English through watching a wide range of platforms such as RU-vid and podcasts every single day. You can do it, guys! It's never too late to learn English. I've been there, done that. Good luck on your English journey!🙏🏻

Thanks Stefanie a lot actually I always turn off the caption and enjoy your speech and can catch all what you say and the addressed message at a 100% accuracy. To me I'm on my way to be fluent and I'm confident that one day I will say hey you did it man. To say what fluency means to me is it's the combination of all these factors together 1- to love the way you speak, Love your self speaking like "early bird's steps" and love the difficulties of learning lessons that your dad and mum teach you it's equivalent to "English Teacher" like you Stefanie. 2- Accept doing mistakes as long as you can deliver the message. 3- Delivering the message with different tones and intonations actually it's the most challenging thing for non native speaker but it could be learned and achieved by obtaining (1,2). I think if we could put a quote for non native speaker to motivate them during their fluency journey we could say "Absorb English by learning and consume it by speaking ". Thank you very much Stefanie actually your passion for helping non native speakers is luminous and appear in every video you did. Keep going.

I don't remember when and how I reached fluency in English. I can't remember not being able to hold a long conversation in English. But I remember that moment in German. I was doing the au-pair program in Germany in a tiny town in Saarland. It was the weekend, and I just agreed to meet this guy from a dating app. I was getting ready for the date when my host father came home. He asked me where I was going and I just started telling him about the guy, and the date, and our plans. I remember talking really fast because I was in a hurry but also excited. And I remember him looking at me observantly and saying: "Well, I guess you're fluent now, huh?". Unfortunately, I am no longer fluent in German as I don't speak it at all.
