What Game Genres Are Winning & Losing This Console Generation? - Next-Gen Console Watch 

Fighting games are definitely on the rise now. Excellent games and the big 3 all released recently.

Fighting games are clearly on top right now, its an FGC renaissance .

Fighting games are dominating this console generation because of rollback netcode, player feedback improving the game and lot of classic and new fighting games are coming out this year and in 2025.

Tbh this generation focused on integrating everything so much and putting all games on services that it caused the death of creativity in games

Not a fair question because it’s the legacy games that are winning when you look at the financial data. GTA V is how old and it’s still making money? Fortnite and so many other games that are legacy in nature same thing. They don’t have the development cost other games because they were made years sometimes a decade ago, but they still bring in money like a brand new game. They bring in more money than the new video games. Developers are in the tight spot cost are higher than ever and when you look back at who’s making all the money it’s not new video games. It’s video games yet we the gamers continue to tell them. This is the worst generation ever but that doesn’t explain why we consumers go back and play the old stuff .

The Nintendo Switch feels like the last really huge addition to the gaming world and that was back in 2017. Other than that it's pretty much console and game wise just been minor improvements of the same things.

We need more new IPs and new ideas, new genres even, gaming nowadays is rehashing the same ideas as 15years ago, making the same sequels and not doing anything new at all.

I'm a big proponent of linear games. There was a point in time when developers started ditching it as a design choice in the name of giving the player more freedom, and 'open-world' became the gold standard, forgetting that a lot of creativity thrives on restrictions. Linear games can also allow for better storytelling if done right. I'd love to see a resurgence of them outside of just traditional horror games / boomer shooters.

Fighting Games nuff said! Guilty Gear Strive is still strong, KOFXV is still breathing despite SNK's focus on Garou 2, Granblue Fantasy has a Rebirth. And obviously Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 are still rocking! Also MVC is back with a collection! Can't say the same for Mortal Kombat 1...

You're right, open-world RPGs are the king right now. Losing is always RTS. It's been an OK generation.

Not mentioning Elden Ring or fromsoftware games in general in the intro is criminal. They did so much to popularize open world action rpgs.

Souls games & rougelikes and fighting games dominating this generation in my opinion. MMO's & Battle royal's are struggling. RPG's and Open world always will be popular as thats a very wide net that can include other genres. Cyberpunk 2077 for example Is a RPG/Open World, FPS hybrid.

Roguelike/Metroidvania have been doing extremely well too

Funny how by now Ryan has stated multiple times that GT7 is cross gen and "does not look that next gen" in comparison to Forza Motorsport that only launched on Xbox series, and yet Digital Foundry has a detailed, in-depth comparison showing that GT7 is a slightly superior game in visuals and game-play experience.

The only genre this generation that's actually relevant is free to play shooters. The other genres people don't care about or not buying.

For 3D Platformers, Penny’s Big Breakaway is an excellent indie released in the last year! Like many genres, it seems it’s mostly the indie scene keeping them alive.

Racing games are getting a revival as there are 10's of new ones coming.

We need to get back to the traditional linear/wide linear action adventure games. Souls/Bourne genre is over saturating gaming.

Never got into RPGs...I dont need a 5 million hour game, that takes my whole life to finish 🙂. Its more action packed, faster paced offshoots RTS and TBS, or my top genres ironically 😂. More slam, bam, thank you mam!

GT7 in VR is the greatest racing experience you can have at home without totally breaking the bank (yes, it’s worth playing on controller if you don’t have a wheel).
