I was 8-9 years old at the time of that crash and watched TV coverage very keenly. I vividly remember general Zia drinking (I think it was milk) before boarding the plane offered by someone. I also remember Gen Zia insisting (multiple times)Gen Aslam Baig to join him on the plane and Gen Baig refusing saying I have a helicopter ready, Even to my 8 years mind that seemed all fishy that how someone can refuse the most powerful man and head of state. My assessment after viewing that conversation and face expressions of Gen Aslam Baig was that Gen Aslam Baig knew about what was going to happen.

I think they meant the start of the USSR defeat in AFG which was very much evident in 1988. USSR finally defeated & withdrew in 1989. It is possible the Soviets eliminated Zia because of Pakistani ISI's success in defeating Soviet Communism in AFG and thwarting Soviet attempts at gaining access to the warm waters of the Arabian Sea. This is definitely plausible. I do not think the US was involved at all. It is unlikely the Indians & Israelis were involved. If there was ANY hint of Indian involvement Pakistan would have immediately reacted. Zia had already privately threatened the Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi that he would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons if India dared attack Pakistan's nuclear installations or even through a conventional attack. Israel would only be in action if there was a US angle. US needed Zia to defeat the Soviets in AFG so it is out of the question. Most likely: Inside job by Pak Army higher command (Mirza Aslam Baig) and elements of PAF to remove Zia - who was perceived to be a liability. MAB would then become COAS. It was made to look like a foreign conspiracy in order to achieve the objective of plausible deniability.
