I've accompanied you on your "tour" of viewpoints and think you made a sound choice. My own takeaway was a set of principles around which I'm working, which are certain common denominators to the teachings of several of the instructors: (1) Focus on the arm swing, not the lower body, and you will get a good sequence, especially on your first move down. A seminal moment was Bobby Lopez' recitation of the first move down as explained by 6 pros. Forget turning the hips--let the lower body happen. (2) The swing is rotational--minimize any lateral movement, ESPECIALLY on the downswing. You MUST stay behind the ball. Moving laterally (usually as part of a weight shift) means there is no room for the hands to take the proper path to the ball (as demonstrated by Malaska and others). The result is a series of compensations, including a steep swing and early extension. The failure to stay behind it, what Lopez called "offsides," is THE major difference between good players and duffers. (3) The proof of the truths of (1) and (2) is in practicing and mastering the Flamingo Drill, which negates lower body and lateral movements while permitting you to hit it as good or better than ever (and proving the truth of the arms as the engine, not the hips). (4) You have probably arrived as a good player when you can swing the same on two legs as you do with the Flamingo Drill.

It's crazy how you answered the exact question I've been wondering about over the last week or two. I've seen your game improve tremendously over the past several months. Thanks for providing such great content for us. I'm in norCal but I'd love to get a lesson from you someday. My swing issues are almost exactly the same as yours.

I've mentioned this before but what I loved about your channel is you weren't the pro but the struggling student taking lessons. There are so many youtube pros but this channel was different. Please don't change this into an ad for your private lessons/swing tips channel.

I'm a Malaska disciple and have been for the past two years. I've always a fa of your page since your early days with Monte over about a year and a half ago. I love the concept behind your sight of looking outside the "norm" of golf instruction for those savants of instruction. Since your release of the source of power I got caught in the trap of taking pieces from different methodologies and ended up playing good golf but with some elements of my swing that were working against me. I've since made the same decision as you to stick to one method and have managed to drop my official (UK) handicap 2.9 shots down into category one in two months. All the instructors you publish on your sight are fantastic and fountains of knowledge but to pick and choose elements from each can be dangerous. It's safer and better to stick to one method for 6 months to see how it works rather than what many people do which is give a new technique one bucket of balls on the range to prove itself. Also, welcome to the Srixon Z irons family, it's much shinier than the Taylor Made one :-)

First off I think you're absolutely doing the right thing for your game by picking the one method that works for you and staying with it. Sadly though, I think the most interesting videos by far are the ones from the various instructors demonstrating their methods and talking golf swing. I've watched many of them multiple times.

Love your channel and don't want to appear to be piling on but I have to agree with the others here that Malaska is the genius. I took about two or three months to REALLY watch Mike's videos and understand his methods and a year later my scores plummeted. I had so many instructors in the past and got no real improvement. One year after using Malaska's methods, I saw improvement I have never seen and have talked to many who have had the same experience. If you watch his videos enough, you will learn more and more and see new insights that will lead to the next level. However, I do understand that you have to go with the instructor who suits your needs and Tony has done some great work. I wish you the best but I agree that you should not get too one instructor oriented on your channel. Malaska's system seems to just keep getting better the more you use it and you get continued growth which is very important to any golfer. Keep up the good work!

This dialogue only video was one of my favorites, primarily because of your unvarnished opinion of how these great teachers affected you. I saw Monte for a private lesson when I was in Irvine last August and no one has diagnosed my swing flaws and given me a simple focus point like he has. The flamingo drill of Tony's is also phenomenal. I agree it gives a real sense of free swinging. When combined with Lopez's reminder to stay on-sides it is very effective. You've been fortunate to have such exposure to some outstanding teachers. Thanks again for being respectful of these great pros but still being so forthright.

5 years of 2 days/week at the range and MUCH studying of some great guys putting up great content. I've really enjoyed your channel. I love this topic and agree completely, amateurs with limited time could do well to heed your advice re: arm focus not body. I've made HUGE progress the last few months with swing philosophy of Tony, Monte & Mike. "Malaska Golf - GENERATING SPEED BY PUSHING AWAY" gave me a way to accelerate the club without using the body like nothing I've tried before. Thanks so much for bringing these 3 to your audience!

While I have not gone too deep into the weeds on all of the videos you've done, I have seen most of them and agree that the reactionary golf method is going to be the easiest way to replicate a swing under pressure. The use of the dominate hand/arm/ side to create power and balance is exactly what golf instruction has needed. I have used Tathata to the extent that I can, but that frankly is not for everyone that does not have a love of martial arts, or adequate flexibility. After watching the flamingo drill and trying it on the range it immediately seemed to connect with the feeling that I get hitting a forehand in tennis and it has made me a much more consistent golfer. Looking forward to more good things from your channel

Everything you said rang so true to me. It isn't that what coaches are saying is incorrect, it's just that I'm not consuming what they're saying, or I am, but it's not the thing I"m doing wrong that's holding me back. For me, it was a STEEP SWING. After many lessons, one seemingly little swing thought completely changed my steep swing immediately. Afterwards, all of the other things made sense and I could actually notice a difference. Hip sway, solid right leg, weight transfer, posture, rotation...now doing those things correctly actually made a noticeable difference in my swing. At the same time though, using an actual good swing path now, if I mess up any of those things the results aren't all that bad. I don't have to be perfect with those things now to get a decent shot.

Great video Brendan! I've tried many of the methods you have previously reviewed, and I always end up with the same problem on the course. Focusing on positions, or sequencing or moves that affect only a part of the swing means that I seem to lose the ability to swing the club freely throughout a full swing.

Great video and topic, Brendon. I've cycled through many methods in my time. The two that have resonated most over the last few years are Mike Malaska and Shawn Clemente. That said, I've recently moved to Adam Young with tremendous success. Adam doesn't prescribe a method but a focus on centering contact on the club face, ensuring low point is forward, controlling arc height, and controlling face/path. He is an advocate of "variability training" which teaches you to control the club unlike any other instructor. He doesn't have a big RU-vid presence but has an amazing blog. Highly recommended to all of you searching for improving your game. You should connect with him at some point for the channel. Very analytical and unique take on getting better.

Great video Brandon. I have followed your channel religiously and its provided me with some of the most amazing shots of my life buts its also caused some of the biggest headaches of in my golf career. with tony's method i hit my wedges and short irons better than any time in the last 16 yrs. but my mid and long irons are absolute garbage right now. i can't for the life of me hit a stock 7 iron. has anyone experience this issue? whats also fascinating is with the mike malaska approach i absolutely strip the driver. it almost seems that ever teacher has pros and cons to their methods.

Hi Brendon Lots of swinging with the right arm only and hitting sponge balls helped get me down from 11-4 so Ive worked hard on right side control and the flamingo is a great drill so I get Tonys right side emphasis BUT when I found my left shoulder move (prob similar to youre Ninja star throw) I put 20yds on my drive! Do you still feel that move.

Good luck Brendan with your plans for the channel. I have enjoyed your vlogs quizzing the different teachers techniques. For me whatever method delivers the club to the back of the ball on a good square path together with good timing will give the best results. With all the different swings of Pro's out there, extremes of backswing it is the position of the hands in relation to the path/angle the club head takes 6" either side of the ball that seems to be the same and really matters to provide the required results. How effectively you can repeat this motion with speed and also having a "feel" for each shot required determines how good a target golfer you will become. Unfortunately most people will spend their lives looking for a miracle swing tip that makes it all click. Then there is chipping and putting to add to the mix. Golf sure is a frustrating game :)

I'm curious where you stand now. I totally relate to you in that I love to hear and learn about golf swing theory and ways to achieve the best swing possible. I am an over-analyzer who strives for the perfect golf swing; however, I keep changing my mind on the best swing method to get there. In the process, my contrasting styles or swing theory/approaches probably made my progress a lot slower. I have followed your journey and as you said in this video, I'm struggling to get my feel from a leg and feet-driven swing. I feel like I'm fighting my instincts in search of this mistake-proof big muscle swing that can't fail me under pressure. Consequently, I am about to purchase the Tony Luczak courses. I just saw this video, but I noticed the date, and I was curious if you'd do an update on your experiences and opinions on swing theory and how certain methods or even principles have worked best for you. Also, let us know if you still feel Tony's approach was best for you at the time. I know a lot of teaching depends on what point you are at in your journey, but I appreciate you giving us a look inside your quest, and for doing some of the digging for us golf swing geeks.

I have to ask can you update your thoughts on this topic? Your most recent content has not included much of Tony's method. I like done of Lopez concepts especially stay onsides you seem to be leaning toward Milos methods which aren't dissimilar to Malaska. I'm drifting between Malaska, Clemens and considering Tony's which I find similar to Clemens. Relatable drills not so position focused seems to work best for me and letting it flow.

Nice vid B. You have to be true to yourself and what works best with your own individual mind/body connection. I too have been plagued with way too many swing thoughts and have recently had my own epiphanies after reducing the noise in my head. For me it was an amalgamation of Monte and Mike's thoughts on preserving spine angle. Also, watching yourself on camera is a brutally honest way to look at all of your flaws. So far so good...

I'm with you about picking a swing method that focuses on the upper body. Personally methods that stress ground up confound me. I find that they increase muscle tension & inhibit the free flowing follow through. This is what I preached as a former tennis teaching pro. Let me know if Tony L & you need someone to promote or even teach his method in the NYC area. All the best!

You are right. The best thing about reactionary golf is that instant success you get. And still, to be able to do hit awesome shots very consistent, you have to put in consistent work. But the drop off after a break or on a really bad day wont be as hard because it is such a "natural" move. Few drills in the beginning and you are back to what is not awesome, but good enough for an easy fun round.

Interesting video.. I'm a total Malaska fanboy so i'm disappointed about your choice.. Btw I found your channel because i was looking for more Malaska videos.. I do agree you should adopt one swing / coaching philosophy and stick with it. So go for it! Your choice was an obvious one as you seem to have a good rapport with Tony. From my viewer/learner perspective Tony and Mike seem to teach the same right hand dominated swing. My problem is Tony's swing philosophy is eluding me as I have yet to find the aha moment from either his or your vids.. Mikes vids on the other hand are very easy to understand and i was able to go to the range and make his swing happen within 20 minutes of trying. You even you seem understand Mike's swing better when you describe their respect swings.. Please stick with the varied instruction don't turn your channel into the Tony channel.

I think the USGA is applying a pound of prevention for an ounce of cure in situations like amateur status. It's funny you mention the Mid-Am - I remember reading somewhere that its nickname is the "reinstated amateur" tournament - so many guys who turned pro, struggled on the mini tours, then end up applying for amateur reinstatement end up in that tourney. Anyway, I think the USGA is hyper-sensitive to the topic of amateur status due to a couple of scandals back to the 50s - the Eddie Lowrey/Harvie Ward situation, and the Deepdale calcutta scandal. I guess it's better to be overcautious about it than going the other way.
@pb236
@pb236 7 лет назад
Having watched a glut of RU-vid experts and tried just about everything it's clear there are only two swings...the rotational swing and the traditional swing. All the instructors are teaching the same thing, but in different ways. The key for everyone is to find the 'feeling' that resonates with you. Some will feel it starts with lower body, some with arms, some with upper body. If you task your brain it knows what to do....it's what you task your brain to do that's key. I doubt any good/pro golfer thinks about upper/ lower body. Most amateur golfers struggle with keeping their right arm in, and shoulder under the ball line. You've just got to find an instructor that explains a motion that resonates with you to achieve this. The flamingo drill is perfect example. For me it was the feeling of throwing club down the fairway. If you start to force all the specific motions in a swing your body can't react quick enough and it all goes haywire. It all has to be a natural subconscious motion. Keep doing the different instructors Brandon as they all have different ways of getting that feeling, some will work for some, and others for other folk. That's what's been good about your channel, different ways to achieve the same thing, no one way better than other, just different.

Good choice to go with one method and work at it, however, ref. too many swing thoughts and the reactionary swing etc. Don't forget, regardless of which method you choose, it's taking (A LOT) of time to practice those 'new movements' that is essential to create consistency. During that practice you may (will) use many swing thoughts, feelings and positions during training/practice sessions to make small changes or improvements to positions. That practice, will 'train' your body movements and (hopefully!) allow you to re-create those good movements on the course whilst having only one swing thought (or none!). Either way you choose, still requires different swing thoughts (and practice with those new swing thoughts) to produce a better swing. The on course stuff will be automatic if you put the work in. Slowly, slowly - catchy monkey! Keep at it. :)

I’ve been following your journey, and one thought I have is that RGS works well for you is because you have a very powerful hip turn already. So when you go to the arms first feel (that causes your hips to gear up for that swing even though you don’t think “hips first”) your hips are going to provide a much more powerful reaction than the weekend golfer. When I try that feel I tend to hit fat because my weaker hip turn doesn’t shallow my club and pull me through impact. Also I’ve seen you criticize the lower body focus by showing this wildly exaggerated hip forward, arms stuck sample swing. It’s a little overdone.

He covers full body geometry, biomechanics, ground pressures, torques and forces etc. all of his players have different swings, but he gives them the most powerful, and efficient matchups for their individual motions 💯

Tony and Monte seam to have much the same ideas but differently illustrated. I have found many similarities in with Tony as I watch Montes Drive 4 Dough video. As you say it's all about finding whats suits you but also a swing that doesn't injures you (spine, joints...) and what is repeatable for an amateur. This can, by the way be ideas taking care of in future videos. Good Luck

I'd like to be your first student! Some of the best swings I've ever done was just purely me trying to hit the ball as hard as I possibly could.. With NO swing thoughts what so ever. Just trying to literally break the ball.

Curious if you saw anybody that specializes in biomechanics like mike Adams, ea tischler, or wright performance?

Kevin Sheriff Agree 100% I’ve done BioSwing Dynamics with an EA Tischler pupil. It’s a great way to learn your specific biomechanics based on your body measurements and movement patterns. Helps a lot sorting through golf instruction because not everyone can swing mechanically the same.

I think any one would have been worth following--but I also think you must stick to one or go crazy with too many swing thots. For my swing fault, I really liked Malaska, Learned lots of good things from all of them, Thanks for the journey,

what part of your body would you think of when throwing to home plate from the wall in center field - you would not think of upper or lower body - your body would use the ground to generate the required force without thinking about anything but making the best throw to your target - sheesh - this aint that hard people

I am a little curious about the USGA's opinion on this. I would think that if one is an author, and they wrote books talking about the golf swing, and those books included some of the author's opinions, even if it was just about what swings they like, or what methods they like, could they really determine that this person no longer enjoyed amateur status? I would think you would fall into a similar category as this. Perhaps they would have even less justification for abolishing your amateur status than they would of an author, because an author is selling books, you are not selling videos. Can an amateur golfer not make videos talking about golf on youtube, and what it is they do? What if the US Amateur champion posted their win on youtube, do they lose their status? So by this logic, Bobby Jones would not be an amateur, because, he certainly made videos, and someone certainly made money from those videos, and one way or another Jones eventually profited from his fame. Seems pretty murky to me.

all of these methods will bring some momentary skills that vanishes overnight because you are not touching yet the singularity of the swing !

What swing method is best? Umm...the one that puts the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes haha. The golf swing is the golf swing. It's each person's swing issues that dictate their "feels." That's it. Some people hook, some people slice. Some people hook then slice or slice then hook. I don't get what swing method means. Sounds more like a review of instructors versus swings.

I think there is no great teacher. There are great lessons. 1 lesson from teacher A and another lesson fron teacher B. Also, some lessons will affect me at different moment of my development. A video seen 3 months ago suddenly make complete sense the second time.

Tiger's problem right now is his sequencing
@mitchy7051
@mitchy7051 7 лет назад
alot of Tiger's issues are by products and reminisce of his time with haney and sean foley. his hand path is quite different from all ball strikers, and is heavily reliant on super human timing to achieve any type of consistency. he was already a poor driver of the ball even when he won 14 majors and his philosophical approach to his swing doesn't make things easier.

Is seems the method you choose has as much to do with making money as improving your golf swing,maybe more so. If all the teachers could give you an unlimited amount of time would you have picked Tony? No offense to Tony, but I think not,I would rather you say because of Tony's ability to give me the time I need to develop my brand I choose him. Saying otherwise is a disservice to all the other instructors who have taken time to help you grow your channel
