25 years welding , and this happens to be the best explanation on youtube. Expecialy since most dont refer to metal as reactive , active... this clears up alot of argument between the tig welders at our shop...
I have been welding since I was 13 and lets say that I am VERY much older now and I have never heard such good information on TIG welding and the use of different size cups. HourGlassFab, you have a great video presence and your information is great. I will subscribe and comment. Keep up the great work.
Dude...I've been welding for years (10-15years) and most of this stuff I've had to find out on my own from just trial and error. These videos like this are awesome and super good. I think it's about time I start getting involved with helping the next generation! Nice job brother...keep'em comin!!
Awesome man, thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I have been a welding for about 2 years. I am one to scientifically pick the subject apart and truly understand what’s going on and I’m good at doing that. I’ve put 150% into welding over the last two years and I thought I’d put in my 2 cents. Thanks again for the support!
HourGlassFab Meee too!! I was never really that way but after finishing college I became so consumed with the scientific side. And it seemed like Jody was the only guy putting out great videos. So most things I did I had to come up with my own tricks and learn stuff. I have worked in so many shops and they've been across the spectrum...aerospace to heavy, heavy structural steel. Your doing it right brother. Congratulations on all your success with your business too. I've been following your IG for a while. I love those steady hands you built. Maybe one day I can afford one...hahaha
Love the beard bro! Well groomed! Most don’t keep it trimmed. Info was awesome. My thought is like Jody says, the gas swirls like a mushroom head or top of a nuclear blast if you have too much gas flow. Watch a nuke blast and notice the top curl up like a scroll. Keep the gas under control and prosper. Its a key secret not much talked about.
Seriously is this your first RU-vid video.. well done for look and punchiness. You come across like an old RU-vid content creator. Keep it up... pace yourself.. But keep uploading content... you’ll break through
HourGlassFab, Your the MAN. I just started learning TIG on my LOTUS 200 Machine bought it because of the reviews and Cost. I am making a JETJOHN Boat. Jetski motor and outdrive mounted inside my Aluminum Hull. I cut the hull to large as I was going to graph the fiberglass hull into the boat. I decided to weld up the hull and reduce my fiberglass area to the Hull surface substancially. I watched some youtube videos on welding Aluminum and started with the limited Supplies with the Welder but they worked. Holly Cow, My Aluminum Welds were somewhat washed out and I had some serious warping going on. So I ordered some more supplies with glass Cup lens included that just arrived this friday. I for sure thought that the glass lens cups was the ticket for helping my welding. My torch was all setup untill I saw your video. I immediately went out to the garage and changed from the glass to a smaller #5 cup. reduced my argon to about 12 cfm from 20. Set my amperage to 90 and laid down a stack of Dimes on my first pass. I have never been able to do that and no warping of the Metal. I am all Eyes and Ears. Thanks for the Great Advice
ntc3gtr that is absolutely fantastic man! I appreciate you taking the time to comment. 🙏🏻 it’s great that you took something from the video and I am super happy you were able to knock out the project you were working on. If you ever have any questions feel free to email me @ hourglassfab@yahoo.com
Thanks for info. WARNING: Do Not let the RU-vid haters you WILL encounter get you down! Be prepared to get some offensive, cruel and rude comments aimed at you. Thanks for making video.
Ken A Gahd, the 1st response to my first post on a well established welding forum was: "shut up fa***t, your welds suck". Naturally, I was heartbroken, so I looked him up on FB and it was a 19 yo knucklehead who'd been out of trade school for six months... I run 6 month long beads every day. I dried my eyes, unwadded my ruffles, and clicked away before begging him to reexamine my weld before making that his final professional opinion. I think I'm a better person having suffered and endured it. Yet still I dance...yet still I dance
so is chubby 8 better than chubby 10 in most cases, because its a bit smaller and uses less gas? or 10 would be quite nice for beginners anyway, because it can have more stickout for better visibility?
The video was so good I actually checked to see if this was your first video. Very well done. Nice short intro, keep it that way. Some guys think we wanna watch their long intros every video.EDIT: Well shit, your second video has a long intro. Come on man.......
So I am just starting here I am trying to eliminate all the work it takes to fabricate a bracket for new parts on antiques with only hucks all my parts get painted anyway so is it really gonna make a difference in a painted weld if I use a lens or traditional cup?
Hi, thanks for the information, I'll be saving this video for a quick go to. I recently started to practice welding aluminium, I found the standard #6 cup and standard diffuser easier that my gas lense.
Beginning welder here... well, self taught for the last five years... I learned a lot from your video as compared to many here on RU-vid. I appreciate the content and also that I happened to click on your FIRST video. I'll be watching all of them.
Good video. I actually couldn’t find anything wrong.;~) I’d like to give people an idea of a gas lens. When you have your water faucets at home, you know that there is a “gas lens” inside the tip of the faucet. It gets dirty and has to be cleaned after a while. You don’t need to clean a gas lens, unless you make mistakes in welding, and spatter and dirt gets inside. Take the end off your faucet, and watch the water coming out compared to with the tip and you’ll get a good idea as to what happens in your torch with and without a gas lens. Just be aware that Pyrex cups are delicate. If you drop a ceramic cup, you’re usually ok, but more often than not, a Pyrex cup will shatter. So be careful with them.
This helped so much I’m just beginning my GTAW journey in school and I ordered a super nice gas lense kit from yes welder. And when I try them out tomorrow im definitely coming back to this video. Thank you sir and subscribed for sure.
Video was put together very well! I don't need or want all that extra crap to make the video look interesting, i like technical, & this was exactly that!
Great video and just as a suggestion to mention that cup sizes even though its implied is that cup sizes are broken down to 16ths of an inch where as you said a number 8 = 1/2 ID
this is such an amazing weding channel unrushed and easy to follow didnt miss steps becuase you though oh they should know that you explained everything. well done new subscriber here
Great video.. I’m starting to learn how to weld I’m also on instagram @jc.tig not much on there but will start posting a lot more when I have a bit more time to practice Thanks man
I haven't tig welded in 6 years but I just bought a machine and the whole set up to get my hand back but for some reason I have been struggling a little. This is some of the best information that I have received since I have been watching RU-vid videos. Thanks man and keep the info coming
I’ve been a combo welder for about 10 years. Started out doing casing and pipe and now I weld all sorts of wild shit. This was suggested to me and I stopped by just to see the quality of the information and Hourglass knocked this out of the park. Clinical information here, explained simply and efficiently. Great job. Listen up, people. This man will save you some heartache.
Sir: I am a retired professor of physics (Electro-Optics, Plasma Physics and Quantum Electodyamics) and a Marine Colonel. NEVER in any technical field is the ancient Imperial system used. America desperately needs to eliminate the damnable Imperial system totally. I am a complete neophyte just starting to learn TIG welding at 80 years old. So much to learn in a very short time in order to do it extremely well.
Great information and well presented, answered the questions I had and much more. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, I'm off to look through more of your uploads.
Great job man! I’ve been playing around with tig welders for years at work and finally decided to buy my own. Your video gave me some insight as to which cups I might want to try out.
I’m new to your channel. New to welding too for the most part. Never had a formal lesson, I will be soon though. I’ve learned the little that I know through videoed and trial. I really appreciate the way you teach. School was hard to say the least. If I had your style of teaching for all my classes growing up, I’d be a lot farther than where I am now @ soon to be 43. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Very informative, as an okay stick MIG. Just got a Miller Dynasty 210 and am starting learning (I do have a very accomplished mentor .) But he is a busy guy, so in his absents your a great fill in.
YAY it's B-Rad on the mic! I found the same for Alum, no gas lens and you get a better controlled arc. Gas lens for everything else! I've been known to stick that Tung out well past the limit with great success, you just keep to cup your hand to help keep some Argon where you need it!
I weld stainless steel round bar in a few different configurations. What would you recommend on torch set up and machine set up? the welding area differs in each project, i can show you some pictures if need be. I typically weld 5/16", 1/4" and 3/16' round bar together to make horse bits.
I am new to the tig weld scene and im about to buy my first machine.. i wasnt aware about the id and the tip can be the same. I will be watching more of your videos
Just starting brand new & setup is a Parweld inverter welder. Came with a WP9V torch & a load of #4 ceramic cups. Got a lot of various aluminium coupons to get started & to practice. I’m worried about this gas/valve/ starting/breaking weld/ leaving gas on. I know it’s gonna have to be lift start & working this valve. Any vids on this? Any tips, thoughts & advice would be brilliant. Thanks in advance.
It might be a good content if you make a video for Gas lens ceramic cup, like what's the difference when welding with the different sizes of cup or etc. Ceramic cup gas lens is the easiest to find and cheapest to buy we could get from south East Asia areas, specially at my country 🇲🇾. So hopefully, there's a video content from your channel that show even a little information about that. Btw, this is a good video 😉👍🏻. Keep it up! ♥️
Awesome man ty so much for the info. Haven't picked up a tig torch in 15 years...been stick welding ever since I left the union in 2004... use to to high pressure steam..back at it now welding some 3" schd 10 pipe...first root no too bad...cap herendus 🤣
