My $30 baofeng UV-5R helped me and my family here in Illinois last week when a tornado was heading our way I had the 911 dispatch on one channel and NOAA on another going back and forth between the two getting updates in our basement!!!! The tornado touched down by Humboldt Il and traveled northeast about 7 or 8 miles from us!!! Thank God it traveled over mostly farmland and noone was injured!!!!

Hi Josh. This was a great video....we often don't consider the realistic use case when we buy equipment....and this applies to radios, amplifiers, antennas, etc. Your video is a great response to most "what is the best...." questions.

Am studying for my tech license now. I'm ready to take it, but the next test the local club is giving is in November. I looked up the active users in my area and I am fortunate to have a bit over 100. Also have access to 4 or 5 clubs in the area. I'll keep reviewing the test material online. In the meantime, I find videos like this very useful, since I haven't purchased anything yet. Appreciate what you do.

Great Video, Josh. Thank you. My plan for my amateur radio license, from the beginning, has been to start in HF. My CB & GMRS licensed forays in RF communications have pushed me in that direction. Your question is THE one I SHOULD HAVE ASKED MYSELF at the very beginning. Thanks.

My grandfather was licensed as was my father RIPx2. After over a decade, I am finally gaining access to some serious gear for my home. In fact, both my grandpa and father had dedicated rooms for their ham setups. It always fascinated me. Radio still does. Until I get into the attic and get the homebase antenna and 50's/60s/70s gear out, I got a Baofeng on the way. Studying right now for my license before I even have a radio in my posession. LOVE IT.

As a brand new Technician, your video convinces me I will need to upgrade my license. I want to talk to people well beyond line of sight. That is not a happy prospect as I'm 76 and had some difficulty with the Technician material though I passed first time. I guess I'll spend time getting used to the medium and it's permitted frequencies. Joining a club makes sense. Thank you.

Very good points raised Josh. What you said about the US also applies similarly (but maybe slightly different) in the UK. The point you made about the club is a useful one. Most clubs will lend you kit, most ops will tell you what they like or don’t like. Don’t splash out too soon even though you want to.

Cool video, very useful for newbies. I went through this in the past year - got my tech in May, passed my general last month. I started out by piddling around with an SDR dongle, a raspberry pi, and an old tv that I fixed. One night, I scanned across a ragchew on a local repeater - that blew my mind! I had no idea that was even a thing. I was down the rabbit-hole. This is when I started researching online. Next step I bought a cheap rooftop antenna, then a UV-5R. Took the tech exam and passed. Bought a bunch of cheap Chinese radios. Joined the local radio club. Went to a hamfest, bought an old multibander and a G5RV. Blew out the multibander experimenting, and the G5RV broke in a windstorm. But, now I have something to do - I have to fix the radio and cut the antenna down into a 20M dipole. I love a challenge. Not that you care about my experiences, but I have found that there are so many things to discover with amateur radio and tinker around with - setbacks, successes, experiments, ideas... There's the frustration of listening to the old guys on the repeater talking about their minor health issues or the crappy condiment selection at a local diner, but that is forgotten the next night by the excitement when you realize that the guy on your 10M radio is in someplace far off like Spain, Quebec, or The Caribbean.
@edenrose2374
@edenrose2374 2 года назад
I have to admit i get a laugh out of the local club members chatting about random things like their health and auto troubles. But sometimes i get to hear some amazing things like DIY instructions on making telescopes. Im surrounded by repeaters (closest being 5mi[9km] out, and furthest being 30mi[50km] roughly). There is usually something to hear on 2m in the evenings. (I am waiting for restrictions to lift locally for i can get my license. | but its enjoyable experience as is.) I only got interested into the hobby last year following, experimenting with trying to resolve bad RFI with every antenna i had for broadcast signals. Getting a SDR to learn more about it and later experimenting with decoding NOAA SSTV broadcasts. I was scrolling past 2m when i noticed just how lively it is. Since then ive bought several SDR's for more experimenting and even a few handhelds in preparation for getting my license. I may of not been able to resolve my issues with HF/UHF interference, but VHF is loud and clear (mostly) and this hobby is just getting started. | So i absolutely agree with you and these videos points. VHF/UHF is great to start out. (Note: my region doesn't have restrictions on HF/SW for our equivalent technician license. Just restrictions on what you can transmit and band-plan limitations similar to what the FCC has.)
@DellFargus
@DellFargus 2 года назад
@@edenrose2374 From what you stated here, you already have a pretty solid grasp on a lot of the tech license exam questions. You should try an online test to see how you do! If you go on ARRL's website, you may be able to find a test session over zoom. For your rfi issues, you may be able to solve them with some ferrite chokes, which are cheap. The trick will be tracking down the offender.

I'm in an area with terrible line of sight and hf is a little above my level at this moment but messing on Kiwisdr and using other people's sdrs is highly addictive to me. Listing to actual local chatter in texas from North West England etc, I've heard everything from town gossip to lasagne recipes lol. None of that beats finding the signals through your own equipment though. My mind is still blown listening to shortwave some days, Cuba, China and everywhere in between.

Disclaimer: I got into ham radio before cell phones were ubiquitous and were mostly limited to the wealthy or for business purposes. My reason to get into ham radio was to communicate with my friends that were already hams. I bought a 2m 5W HT because it was mostly my friends communicating with each other locally. My little Alinco DJ-195T is the only functioning radio that I use, and it still essentially meets my needs. My future radio needs are much more likely to pull me towards GMRS actually, for inter-vehicle communications on four wheeling trips, GMRS has proven popular in lieu of both ham and CB. For those that are looking to exchange QSL cards, or to use repeaters, or those that want to push their electronics bounds, different radios/systems may make more sense. And even I am not immune to considering buying more radio, a mobile tri- or quad-band radio with a repeater book offers a nice safety lifeline when out in the middle of nowhere away from cellular telephone service. But no one has made the radio that want, which would be capable of receiving commercial broadcast stations and properly using stereo or surround sound output in a car.

I live near Ft. Bragg. Occasionally Army or other active duty are WAY out in the boonies when stationed overseas. I used to know a guy who did shortwave so families could talk to their loved one overseas where cell phone is not available or discouraged for safety reasons. (Cell phone chatter can give away positions unlike shortwave.) THAT is what interests me. So what type of rig would you recommend for a beginner?

Perfect question. I got my license, got a radio, then spoke to no one. I'm just not one to gab and I have nothing to say unless there is actually something to say. I actually got the license through the hospital as I was part of the HazMat team, but gave up on HazMat, because the people I would depend upon for my safety had difficulty tying their shoes much less not cross contaminating everything. Gave my equipment to the local Ham club and that was that. I'm still registered technician class though - KI4LMH. I just felt like keeping it, because maybe one day I'd find something worth using it for.

I’m glad I found your video, it filled in a lot of unknown information for me. As for how many users in my area, I found 54, four clubs, and 10 repeaters in my state, with the closest one being 40 minutes away. I tried to make sense out of what you explained about users and repeaters, and am thinking it will not be worth it for me to proceed. It is also unlikely at this time that I will be able to install any kind of antennae, anyway. I had looked into the “beginner” radios, but after watching your video I’m guessing that won’t really work for me, either. Being able to talk with people around the country, and eventually possibly around the world is something I’m interested in but I may have to put that on hold for now. At least that’s what I got from your video.

A (friend) at the BestBuy store told me a few people asked them "what's the best ham radio" because some neighbor guy told them they will need it for when "the grid" collapses and even cell phones won't work. Why do people go straight to ham radios? They don't even know how to behave in an emergency situation. During Hurricane Sandy, City Hall in my town was FULL of people who just didn't know what to do. They were just sitting there eating donuts & coffee, when most people ion my street were taking steps to heat & power their own houses, except the people who just wanted a hot shower, and had no hot water left. There was warm food & drink at my house, as usual. We had plenty of firewood in the garage since the day Sandy was forecast!

Hey, I see your post all over RU-vid about Ham radios, I need some guidance. I came to you because you seem to be a straight shooter! I purchased a baofeng radio over a year ago. So far, I know how to turn it on..... AND THATS IT! So many are talking about taking the Technician test. Hell, I don't even know how to listen to the damn thing!. It "appears" there's an exclusive group of" Hammer's" who won't help anyone unless you meet their criteria. It's almost a superiority complex. I belong to a few gun clubs. Some members act like that also. They'd treat you like you're an idiot if you can't rattle off the grain size of a particular round of ammo. Knowing the velocity, rate, trajectory, and the projected drop rate taking consideration of wind, humidity, elevation. and barometric pressure I tell the beginners, if you have any questions, come talk to me.... I'll give them tips and straightforward info to get them started! I'm not asking to be Cottled. Just point me in the right direction.Of Who's gonna give me the meat and potatoes and not try to impress me with a bunch of jargon unnecessary for beginners. Who knows, someday I might save their lives Thanks for your time

Set a budget and get the best radio you can afford within that budget; I started with a budget of $100 for everything I need to chat on U/VHF so that was a Baofeng UV82, upgraded antenna, and extra battery. That may be a Baofeng for $25 or a Yaesu for $300. The best radio is the one that you'll use most often. If the radio is so expensive that you'll be afraid to carry it with you on a hike or experiment with it then you may want to get a less expensive radio. I can certainly afford the top of the line equipment but I tend to purchase equipment that's well below the mid-price. If I lose it or brick it I can afford another. Remember, you're knowledge will grow and your equipment will change. You may start out with a Baofeng but a year of two later have an near top of the line Icom. Just get started any way you can that won't kill the budget.

And my midsize sedan has virtually no space to neatly install a mobile unit's detachable head.. Solution: get a 2m/70cm handheld, with a cupholder-mount similar to those for cellphones. Add a speaker-mic and the HT can double as a substitute for a mobile rig. A little homework revealed a local radio club and several repeaters in my area, with most of the repeaters running System Fusion and a few supporting WIRES-X. That told me that I should consider a Yaesu HT with System Fusion to get the most bang-for-the-buck. The FT-70 would fit my requirements; but I'm 73 years old; probably not many decades left, I might as well get the best I can afford and get the most out of it. I checked my bank balance, vowed to give up Starbucks for a while, then ordered an FT-5DR and a few accessories (speaker-mic, better antenna, etc.). Separately I ordered a cupholder mount from Lido Radio Products; this model includes an integrated holder for the mic. While $400 is a lot for an HT -- especially my first one -- remember that it will also serve as a substitute mobile rig (and base station, for that matter). And the FT-5 will work with the car's Bluetooth audio system, providing even better sound. I could even use the VOX feature, but I prefer PTT. I'm still planning to go back and get that "first" HT -- maybe an FT-70 -- later as a backup. Yes, I'm doing things a bit backwards, buying a "step-up" HT first; but it just seems like the right thing to do in my case.

I guess as someone who is new to this. My main question is rather, why would I want to talk to anyone in the first place? I have a lot of interest in just listening to what's out there way more than communication. What kind of radio should I be looking for in that regard?
@RJMoreno

SDR my friend. He mentions the kit in the video. I'm a newbie too but I already downloaded the free AirSpy software to get familiar with it. Not as bad as I thought. Even without the antenna you can tune in to a Network of antennas and play around eth that.

You made a good point about how digital modes on VHF/UHF oftentimes is somehow internet connected, I think a lot of people tend to forget how nice it is for simplex use, especially with friends. I started using the YSF Group Monitor function with a coworker on simplex, and it's honestly much more fun than FM simplex, in my opinion.

In your opinion would ham radios be a good option for a few hunters going up north where there is no cell phone signal?

Very much so, but you’ll need a license to transmit. Of you don’t want to do that, Consider GMRS.

Good answer. However I view this differently. There are a few questions you should be asking yourself. One of them is “who do I want to talk to.” But there are others.

I bought my first piece of radio equipment item from you. My amazon account was immediately stolen, they canceled the order and shut the account down. I can not see any of the transaction information. There was no way to see that it was bought so I tried to cancel it at my bank. I recieved the item so I will hopefully be able to clear the money. Sorry if it becomes disputed someone is messing up my internet accounts. Let me know if you saw this.

The 7300 wasn't cheaper when it came out. Its now cheaper because its older and has sold tons and tons over. The 9700 is newer and has 2 independent transceivers with buzz word filtering. Also 1.2Ghz which is mostly a $pecial use therefor $$$

Older hams may give you a radio-- free. Whatever radio would be nice if it covered the HF bands and the VHF UHF bands as well. If they turn on and light up, 5 to 10 year old used second hand transceiver is nice too try out and maybe get. Don't forget you will need some kind of antenna, and the old rule the higher the better and in the free and clear surrounding area. Experienced, I said experienced, licenced radio operators can solve for you awesome seemingly difficult things so ask for help-- so invite them over. Welcome to ham radio-- a wonderful hobby that has sustained me for my lifetime and probably will yours as well.

If you're going to operate HF check the bands with a portable radio first!! You may find out your neighbors have solar panels with power optimizers!! These create massive broadband RFI!! You are screwed you won't hear will on HF bands and even 2 Meters in some cases

Thank you very much Josh, for this is a very thought provoking video. People definitely need to ask themselves what their end goal is when getting into this wonderful hobby. Since there is no broadcasting, you really need that two way communication. I have heard, and sometimes seen myself how discouraging it can be when becoming a Technician when you call out on 146.520 and get nothing. But when you do get a reply, often it is from someone driving through the area. That is cool. I think it would be beneficial as has often been expressed, to give Techs a sliver of alive phone HF, even if it is just on one band. I am sure this video will help point new viewers in the right direction! De K1MAZ

As you mentioned, people get interested because of a friend or family member who is a Ham. Like going to a car dealership, or a gun store, try before you buy. Using the radios that the Elmer (friend/family) has is the easiest way to find out what you like.

Screen is everything but you pay for it. Screen helps ALOT when your a beginner,I know cause I’ve learned ALOT on my own with a great screen and great programming software. ICON 5100…awsome screen for learning. Handheld, ANYTONE 878 awsome screen again. Both have great software to learn and program……getting contacts is different story AFTER you get a comfortable radio…..

What is your goal is then right answer...who do you want to talk to is a fail for me cause I dont like talking a lot. I prefer listening 90+ % of the time. HF or VHF I dont talk much. I'd probably be called inactive because I don't feel the need to talk much. I prefer to just listen to what's going on around me (my scan also includes local municipal frequencies. We do not have digital or trunked out here.) I have about 4 active repeaters I can hear. They are a bore fest unless so.ething like a severe weather scenario is occurring. I do tune around on HF but dont get too deep myself. I have tried but beyond a POTA attempt and fail. I dont get onto HF to do much more than listen. My radio time is minimal. I have more hobbies than I can count so I tend to bounce around a lot. Again I say identifying your goal is key. My primary goal is local comms with capabilities to reach out if things so sideways. I never leave the house without a 2m/70cm setup. I have a mobile in my truck and many mobile options If not.... I have identified my primary need. This helps for day to day usage.
