English pre war stanley and record planes had rosewood handles. When the war started the importation of rosewood ceased and both companies moved to beech handles. Beech continued to be used during and after the war. I have not seen an English post war plane with rosewood handles.

nice collection you have, John. Low angle plane are fantastic. I was lucky enough to find a second hand low angle jack with a 25° (for end grain), a 38° (for smoothing) and a 50° blade (for scraping). Now i more or less use only this type of planes, and keep the bailey's one for collection Alberto

I've bought a load of stanley resto jobs this past few years. I love restoring them but I've have more than i need now. The funny part is my wife has a little OCD and all I have to do is tell her that the planes should be flat and the sides should be 90 degrees and they're not , she can't let that go so that's half the battle 😂😂😂

Have you ever considered wooden planes like E.c.e or Ulmia? I know Germans swear by them.

I've not really looked into the wooden planes, I'll check those ones out.

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed They are a little bit more fidely to set up, but once you get the hang of it they work great. I personally find it actually a lot nicer to plane wood that way. It slides a lot easier (especially if you go for lignum vitae soles) and also burnishes the wood as you go. Another pluspoint is that the premium wooden planes are much cheaper than any decent metal bodied planes.
