This is my favorite movie. Spike Lee changed the way the movie looked to show a literal depiction of how Troy felt visiting a place outside the city for the first time. It was a culture shock for her. Btw the movie is a coming of age story for Troy. I don’t think it was necessarily void of a plot. I literally used to watch this and as soon as it ended rewind the tape and watch it again.

Yes Primm, this is Brooklyn in the 70s. I'm 46 years old and grew up in a "Spike Lee Joint." Loll. Our Hawaiian neighbors had a rooster. We had a shoeshine man (Mr. Flanagan) on the corner, a watermelon truck in the summer, splashed around in the Johnny Pump and ate black eyed peas for dinner. Right now, there's a man who plays his saxophone in the backyard behind me every morning. People are still loving and making big families. Crooklyn is a cinematic masterpiece. 🎬🙌🏽

thank you!!! I'm from the west coast, midwest, and the islands, and could relate to pretty much everything in this movie 😂 Primm missed out lol it's coming of age - it's remembering simpler times - it's black family chaos - there's the artist vs finances debate when raising children (he missed the scene where mom falls down the stairs and busts her ankle, then tells dad to get out) - there's the idea of a neighborhood where you actually knew your neighbors - kids still playing outside NOTE: the Auntie and Uncle that picked Troy up from the airport cooking back to Brooklyn was Spike Lee's sister Joy, she's been in several of his movies and does things behind the camera as well - and Vondie Curtis Hall, the dude who played the bathroom attendant that recognized Eddie Murphy in Coming to America (first thing to come to mind that many ppl would remember him from 😂 - though i know he's done plenty of other stuff - also in front of and behind the camera) AND this was the last summer he remembers before his mom passed away when they were all still tryna grow up there's so much to be had with this movie PLUS the sdtk!!!! **RuPaul** a bunch of All Stars in it... @Primm

Thank you for the fun fact about the eyebrows, lol. Now I finally understand that the change of lens represents a different Troy sees this new world she is in...still hate it though, lol This movie is my family to the T from the parents to the order and gender of the children to spending the summers with my only child girl cousin. Just like 😢 experienced the change of dress, hair, environment and lifestyle so did I. I don't even see groups of kids outside playing anymore unless it's school or organized and thats just sad. And just like the actors in real life, my oldest brother died, and I became a teacher like the actress. It was my father who passed away, not my mother. This movie means so much to so many ❤

It's boring. But boring doesn't really equal bad unless it's meant to be exciting. For example I just watched "Severance" it's nine episodes and each one is almost an hour. It's plot moves slowly and its main cast is very small with like 10 important characters with only 4-6 routinely being on screen most of the time. It's boring but it is good and popular among viewers.
@richknow
@richknow Год назад
The parents were fighting and considering divorce because dad wasn't bringing in any money. It's an important driving motif in the plot. As a kid, you miss it, but as and adult, it explains how Troy ended up going away for the summer. Send the younger kids away for the summer while we figure things out. Also, Troy going away made the camera stretch out becuase it was like a dream sequence. Nothing was real to her, everything was strange. The camera effect conveys that subconsciously. Or, that's just my interpretation. I love this movie.

i was born in the 80s, but my childhood was basically what Spike Lee depicted in Crooklyn. All except for the sounding of the horn for dinner, cat-throwing and the glue-huffing. 😆 BTW, Troy snuck out to the store that night. Our corner store was only four doors down from our house, but we kids were not allowed to go there after the street lights came on. What i don't understand is people dogging Crooklyn for not having a "plot". i first saw this movie when i was 10, and it never occurred to me that there wasn't a plot until i was a teenager. It didn't matter to me because the movie was so well put together. i understood it as it was and i loved it. Most likely because it resembled my own experience. You thought the Maryland segment was boring??? i think the "stretched effect" of Maryland was meant to illustrate how the Carmichael family entered into another world. It's kind of how i felt when i would leave inner city Philadelphia to visit wealthier relatives in the suburbs. It's an effect that i remembered seeing in 1960s/70s musical films as a kid. It didn't make much sense to me either, but i just accepted it as an "old movie" thing. Very much of it's time. i always felt that Viola killed the dog, but she seemed genuinely shocked to see Queenie pop out of the sofa bed. THAT scene kept me laughing for a good decade. 🤣 i am curious, Primm. How old are you?

This movie although it didn’t have a dramatic plot, there is one- a snapshot into a black family where the mom isn’t as valued as the glue until it was too late. Husband and wife dynamic as well when they have two different Approaches to a few issues shown in the movie and the strain it Could cause. It also highlights Troy coming of age as well as her brothers mn but specifically Troy in relation to her relationship to her mother and Her understanding Of being a young lady. There’s other themes In here but I feel it Beautifully showed the Stuff I listed. She becomes her mother/ young woman as she steps in due to her mother passing. His approach to tell the story to me was like making us another member of the family, we’re Dropped in the middle of their day to day. Two things could have caused the stretchy ratio: 1. It could've been a creative decision to signify how disconnected Troy's summer felt since she was away from her immediate family. 2. There could've been a technical issue during filming which resulted in stretching the ratio to fit the rest of the film's ratio.

I SWEAR the 90's was like this, but a bit more modern, everybody was outside everyday, it was always something. Kids, teenagers, young adults. Playing freeze tag as a young'n while jumping over the older kids playing craps on the sidewalk. the adults outside playing dominoes while the boombox playing Ice Cube in the background. I grew up in Inglewood, Ca. These kinda movies really make me appreciate my childhood and the 90's and the gift of life before the internet.

I think the film looks stretched in the Maryland scenes because it’s supposed to signify the days feeling longer (being outside the city in a slower, calmer- more boring place) I also recommend doing the last dragon, set it off, or low down dirty shame .. those are all great options for good hood movies with a lil bit of action going on

Growing up in the 70s was definitely unlike any decade Ive lived through so far. Shout out to anyone here who who remembers getting up early on Saturday just to watch cartoons until they went off at 1pm because that was the only day of the week that the ones made in your lifetime were shown. Can't forget the School House Rock commercials, which were shown because by law, there was a limit to how many ads could be shown during any programming for children....which is why networks weren't showing cartoons weekly. Then came along PBS with Sesame Street and all the rest of the children educational shows. It's interesting to now see how Gen X was developed as children with such a high level of socialization, nurturing, and emphasis on education. I'm not saying it makes Gen X better or worse, but now I definitely know why Gen X is different.

I remember actually half way enjoying the movie when watching it as a kid. It was also painful. It reminded me of a lot of aspects of my own childhood coming from a big family of brothers and sisters. One family member getting sent away to experience something new and different and kind of escaping the chaos of a poor big family. I also was curious about such a different setting as New York and the kind of life one in my situation would live in a totally different setting. It also made me never want to visit new York. It l looked rough. Idk why it was made and it's true there was no story line except random slice of life but it made sense to me as a kid and it made me appreciate my life and family more. It was an interesting look into a setting I had never experienced before and it felt real and relatable as if I was there. It somehow added to my knowledge and concept of living in the world because I was so young when I watched it in the 90s. It actually is kinda of a core part of me because it exposed me to another perspective of human existence when I was a still forming opinions and thoughts as a child.
