When the thruster fires, it changes the course of the asteroid, it only has to move a very small amount for it to completely avoid Earth. From what I remember, they could potentially build the spacecraft easily and we have landed a drone on an asteroid before, the major problem is finding potential asteroids early enough for us to intercept them.
