The last true Alfa Romeo was the beautiful Tonale, built on the FCA platform, designed with a pure Italian style, produced in the Giambattista Vico plant in Pomigliano d'Arco, Naples, Italy. After that, phagocyted into Stellantis (headed by Carlos Tavares) Alfa was forced to build this stylistic failure on top of the Stellantis CMP platform, with so much technical constraints that they gave birth to this genetic monstrosity, what's more in Poland. I say this as an experienced architect and as an proud owner of Giulia and Mito and also as your early subscriber: I don’t like Milano but I’m trying to understand it. First of all it isn’t fair to compare Tonale concept and Milano production version. Second, you know that everything in design is about proportions. For me, production version of Tonale is completely wrong and worst of all (Stelvio-Tonale-Milano) in terms of proportions. The last but not least; Milano tends to be best of the trend not to set the trend and thus achieve market success instead of be one more beautiful Alfa no one is buying. So, yes, it looks like 2008, but it looks better, not worse. Yes, it should have had the more simplified front look from Tonale (look at some Reddit posts) but it is still full of some good Alfa details, let’s see how it drives, after all, that’s what we love and buy them for even more.

Great video as usual, but one criticism from me. Although they clearly look alike, the Tonale concept and production versions differ substantially. The production Tonale is far more clumsily proportioned than the beautiful concept. The profile isn't nearly as successful with a taller, longer rear quarter section. In this respect the Milano is actually more successful than the Tonale. Some of the detailing on the Tonale also differs from the concept. For example the 3 element LED graphic that make up the front lighting signature are too far below the leading edge of the bonnet, compared to the aggressive squint of the concept. I'd have preferred you to use the production Tonale for this comparison, as we never saw a concept Milano, so it's not such a fair assessment. I do agree that the Down Road Graphic is overwrought. The 3 LED top section could've been just a narrow strip, drop the extra LEDs adjacent to and below the headlamp, and the house the actual headlamp (original BMW X5 style) within the red bumper. The rear lighting and 'spoiler' graphic is lifted directly from the 1970s Alfasud TI and so for me, there's heritage there at least. Similarly, and although the modern black glazing approach differs, the high-positioned, very flat rear lighting assembly also reminds me of the approach taken by Giugiaro with the 1970s Alfasud Sprint (later just called 'Sprint') coupe.

Bang on. The 4-ring wheels are playing on the Cloverleaf theme. It seems that there are 3-Rings on the Hybrid, and 5-Rings on the EV. The 4-Ring versions aren't available on the Italian configurator, so it seems those are for the 'Veloce' spec only. 3-Ring wheels were once available for the 147 and 156, back in their day. I thought so then, and - like you - I still think so now, that 5-Ring 'Teledials' look best.

I think what the Alfa designers are trying to do there is to hide the fact that the car has a very tall bonnet with a very short overhang (just looking at the Opel Mokka and Peugeot 2008 which is based on the same platform and you'll see what I mean) - if they have gone for the elegant lines of the Giulia/Stelvio/Tonale, that would look very obvious.
