What Happened to Ben Simmons?

Ben Simmons, once considered one of the top young players in the NBA, has seen a decline in his performance. His points per game have decreased every season since his second year, and his defense, a hallmark of his game, has also seen a decline. His defensive rating, defensive raptor, steals per game, and blocks per game are all the lowest they've been in the past three seasons. Furthermore, he has struggled in crucial fourth-quarter moments, causing the Nets to rotate him with Seth Curry and Tj Warren.
To understand the decline of Ben Simmons, it's important to look back at the 2016 NBA Draft. The Philadelphia 76ers had the number one pick and many were wondering how they would use it. In order to fully understand the current situation with Simmons, it's crucial to examine the decisions and events that led to this point.

Yup. I’m pretty sure he just doesn’t really love basketball anymore as much as people want him to. He saw basketball as just a way to make it out. Now that he’s financially secure he’s pretty satisfied with where he’s at and doesn’t really feel the need to work on his game. Wouldn’t be surprised if he retires in 2025 when his contract is up, but I’m sure if he can finesse a team out of another contract he will. Not sure if anyone will even want him though.

It will stick out anywhere he goes in todays nba to be such a black hole on the offensive side that the defense has to pay no attention to relegates him to being nearly useless. Anytime his box score numbers look good it’s because the pace of the game was fast with no half court to slow him down because he’s a breakaway merchant. The amount of defensive production that he would need in order to make up for he’s offensive weakness is astronomical. He’s a bad player he had all the potential in the world and for whatever reason it didn’t click I have my theories but I don’t think anybody can really say what happened. @@PossessedCreed You're kind of missing the point, he is eligible and would've been called up to Olympics had he not been injured. The thing is he's got 2 more years of his max deal, who wants him after that? Euro teams won't, NBA teams won't. If he wants to rehab his image he needs to get this perception of being lazy malcontent off him if he wants another big payday. (Though to be fair to what you're saying he probably doesn't, can actually see him retire after this contract, he's a guy who likes the NBA lifestyle but hates the responsibilities). The fact that he's not being considered anymore is the most important part, even the Aus National team doesn't want to deal with him anymore. I mean it's Aus - a good solid national team but certainly not USA level who can afford to leave talent at home.

Thank you! I've been saying this for almost two years. It's not "can't shoot." It's not "don't shoot." WON'T. SHOOT. He will not work on his shooting, he will not work on his half-court offense. Ben Simpletons got exposed. (Before anyone gets triggered, I call him "Simpletons" because he knows what his problem is, we know what his problem is, and yet, he will not work to correct that problem NOR attempt to do anything different to at least make opponents consider he may not be so one-dimensional.) Since you threw stats in the video, allow me to provide some of my own research... In his rookie season, he played 81 games and attempted 218 shots in the area between 10 feet from the basket and the three-point line, or what we commonly refer to as "midrange". He's also a 6'10" ball-dominant (given his usage rate) point guard. Less than three midrange attempts a game is low, but we were willing to give him a pass because he's a rookie. With each season, those numbers get lower and lower. In his _fourth_ season, he played 58 games and attempted--not made--44 shots...total. That's less than one per game, and he's playing 30-35 minutes a game. That's like starting the season in mid-October as normal, and not taking a midrange shot until _AFTER_ Thanksgiving. Then, he goes to Brooklyn, and almost shockingly, he's worse. The burden he placed on Philadelphia really didn't become evident until the start of last season when he sat out. Almost _everybody_ in sports media counted Philadelphia out before the first game. What they didn't realize was that Simpletons was literally forcing them to play four-on-five offense because he had to have the ball, but refused to shoot. As long as his opponent cut off his path to the basket, they could double at will or direct the pass wherever they wanted. Embiid and Maxey ran that offense successfully until the trade for Harden, so now it's just a matter of time. The answer to the original question: Ben Simmons happened to Ben Simmons. He can still work on his game if he wants to and if he cares anything about his team and the people doing the work to make that team successful. He wasn't motivated enough to do so while he was at LSU or in Philly, so I'm not surprised he's not doing it in Brooklyn. He loves having that money come in, though. Maybe in his final year he'll get his act together. The problem: Too many people have already seen the show.

@NeilTruick
@NeilTruick Год назад
@@JustaKarenDiscoveredTheIntrnet You are giving him _way_ too much credit, _way_ too many excuses, and you clearly never saw him play in Philadelphia. He never concerned himself with being good or getting better. If he did, he'd still on the Sixers and they would have gotten past Atlanta the season before last. His only concern was, is, and always will be getting paid. As long as the team he was had perimeter shooters he could dish to, he would be successful. The second he had to do any of the work himself, he couldn't do it. The bigger problem is he's _always_ known this is a problem, and refuses to do anything to fix. The wrong hand situation can be fixed if he worked at it. Look at Lonzo and Lamelo. Both of their shots could be easily blocked when they first came into the league. He just has to do the work to fix it, which he won't. Why do I say he won't? This is season SIX for him and we're talking about fundamentals.

I am reminded reading these comments that people forget how unbelievably young these players are. Most players learn to get over the pressure, some don’t. Ben Simmons got in his own head, and a weak mental state paired with massive expectations broke him. He’s a pretty one dimensional player who obviously tried to learn to shoot but had the shaq curse; pair that with the fact that he grew up always having the ball in his hand, and after a great season for Simmons the 76’ers pushed him to the side for the sake of running the offense through Joel. I think Philly made the right call, Joel Embiid is a generational talent, but we forget that the loss to Toronto could have been a win; if it was, Philly probably wins in the finals and Ben’s legacy is entirely different. He’s well paid and the expectations being high is part of the industry, but please remember he’s just a kid. Some players can’t handle the superstar pressure, especially when it’s clear the talent and athleticism are there.
@donaldpriola1807
@donaldpriola1807 Год назад
I think that's partially true. He's probably been coddled. But many of the greats were young, too, and they knew from the level of competition that they had to work to improve, or they'd flounder. LeBron, Michael, Kobe, Pippen, all those guys consistently transformed their game. Simmons is a result of bloated contracts given on potential, a common problem in the league. He won't learn, and his new contract, when it happens, if he's even in the league, will be much lower.

He’s always been, at his best - a tall Rajon Rondo. Standing around as a non threat is the best way to describe it. Zero offense outside of layups and tip ins - but generally a shot is throwing the ball in the direction of the hoop. Against teams that don’t play D, he can drive and get to the basket - in the playoffs when it drops back to 1/2 court - all he can do is screen and stand around. All of this is amazing knowing his father was a pro - and he can’t shoot - at all. No post moves, no jumper - no nothing

Absolutely. Look at Scottie Pippen for instance. He wasn't that different from Simmons when he entered the league--he was a smart, raw talent. Within four years, he increased every single skill set he had, especially shooting. Michael Jordan was the hardest worker AND best player in the league. Look at modern players, too: Ja Morant is tons better than when he was a rookie--even Lonzo Ball transformed his jumper. You can't have everything unless you work. Simmmons will soon understand that when his contract is up.

Game 1 with seconds left in the game nick Anderson a great free throw shooter missed 4 straight free throws which allowed Houston to win the game. Houston was getting smacked by the magic the entire game and came all the way back and nick missed the first two free-throws but got his own rebound on the second miss and got foul again and went back to the line only to miss two more. Dude was like an 85-90% on free-throws before that. Well after that he struggled with free-throws for years after that, he was never the same. I imagine Ben is going through something similar.

It's pretty clear that Simmons needs to be treated like early career LeBron. He's incredible defensively, has amazing passing vision and can drive the ball if needed. The problem with Simmons is he's not as hard working as LeBron was, nor is he as athletically gifted, so he's never going to develop his three point shot, nor is he ever going to excel at driving the ball like LeBron. On the Nets, Ben's whole role is just defend and get some layups here or there because the ball was mostly in Kyrie and KD's hands. In my opinion the Nets should've run 7 seconds or less as a system under Steve Nash (mind you this was Nash's system when he played for Phoenix) and just let the offense cook by allowing Simmons to control the ball and distribute it, kicking it out to KD, Kyrie, Joe Harris, Seth Curry and Cam Thomas. That didn't happen though sadly. Maybe today we'd still be saying Coach Steve Nash, but I doubt it because Nash didn't have any good plays to draw up when they really needed a bucket, but they likely would've won way more games this way instead of their eventual iso type of playstyle which got shut down rather easily by the league defensive leading Celtics. In the end, Ben just needs to go to a team where his role works as a primary PG and I think you will see the old Ben Simmons come out to play. He's only good if there's other perimeter shooters around him to give him space to drive through the lane and get layups by spacing the floor. I was really hoping the Nets would've hired a shot doctor, like the one that the Pelicans got for Lonzo to help Ben learn how to shoot. More than anything, I think Ben needs to go to a team with low or no expectations, a team thats basically not trying to even get into the play-in, where he can just chuck up shots and not have pressure to win every game. He's always been on a contending roster and that means he can't take risks like trying to chuck up threes and learn how to shoot in a game environment because he's too afraid to ruin his team's chances of winning by putting up bricks. But it's the only way he will become comfortable to shoot. His trade value's in the dirt now and the Nets bought a guy who they will now get pennies on the dollar for.
@SonnyK248
@SonnyK248 Год назад
Ben would have been an absolute stud in the 90’s. Firstly he would be athletically superior to about 99% of the league. He wouldn’t be scared to go to the line because you had to do more to go to the line back then so he could bully his way to the rim without the threat of the whistle blowing and him having to stop and walk to the line. And finally in those days the way they forced low percentage shots onto guys was to just protect the paint and get them away from the rim unlike today where they press you behind the three point line if you’re a bad shooter because today a perimeter shot for a good shooter is basically a dunk.

He got as far as he did because although he was never seen as a great shooter, it wasn't extreme like this. People thought "ok, maybe he's just going to be Giannis, and maybe if we're really lucky he'll get that shot as he grows and become more like Lebron." I remember him taking jumpers in Summer League. His shot looked ugly, but nothing like say Lonzo Ball, who became an adequate shooter mind you. There were some reports about him not really being passionate about basketball too, but I don't think it was known just how much of a head case he really is and how uninterested in even trying he would be.

I'm far from a fan of Ben Simmons but if you look at the different years where he's been good or he's been bad there's an easy pattern to see. If you put him out there leading the break with four shooters then the guy is elite. He'll get your rebounds he'll get you assist and he'll get you about 12 to 14 points. If you put them out there with two ISO players and a half-court offense then he's just a liability. It's never going to work in Brooklyn just like it wasn't going to work in Philly once Joel embiid became the focus of the team. There's got to be a setup out there or a team that needs a point guard so they can run the floor and has enough shooters so that he's not a liability. I'm sure the price for Ben Simmons is pretty low right now and there must be some team out there that could use a guy like that. If he ends up staying in Brooklyn or in a situation like Brooklyn he'll be out of the league in 2 years. Hell maybe one year.

No player can ever afford to miss the sheer amount of time Ben Simmons has and ever hope to be amongst the elite. New players with amazing skills are coming into the league too rapidly and the talent pool increases their own skill too quickly. Missed time on the court + a lack of love for the game = Ben Simmons
