Africa has always been referred to as a sleeping giant when it comes to basketball. A shortage of resources and coaching has inhibited the continent’s untapped potential. But thanks to Luc Mbah a Moute’s success in the NBA, the native Cameroonian has been able to give back to his homeland by setting up basketball infrastructure back home that has produced Joel Embiid and Pascal Siakam.
In this episode of THE WAY WE BALL, we follow one prospect’s experience and success through these camps-Joel Embiid.

Humble, humility, tough, aggressive are qualities everyone should possess and use them accordingly and selectively. What I see today with all people of African decent is aggressiveness towards each other with hate and animosity. A lot different from my growing up in Chicago. Everywhere it this hate and I'm more shocked when someone extend themselves in a humble, friendly way. Unfortunately, most of you take this as being a pussy, including women.

This is why I like foreign players. They don’t care about being in la or going to big cities. They play because they love the game they don’t care what city. Too many American players see an opportunity to go to a nice sunny place and jump on it instead of being loyal or building a contender

It's not always that simple though. You have guys that attempt to settle in a spot and be loyal like Isaiah Thomas, Kemba Walker, Russell Westbrook and Paul George. Then for various reasons management can't build a contending team, or they're kinda stuck trying to attract players because of the city they're in. Then you have dudes like Joel who landed in a fortunate situation in Philly or Siakim. My point is players can have all the loyalty in the world but management gets the final say.

Jo's mother and father are just _incredibly_ strong people. Wow. I feel so, so blessed to get to watch Jo play for my Sixers, and as such I'm grateful to Luc Mbah a Moute, his foundation and those running it, Jo's family, the coaches that gave Jo his shot, and _Jo himself_ for taking it with everything he had to give. Philadelphia loves this man, but _every_ NBA fan should love him, even when he's dominating your team on the court. The guy transcends the sport in a way nobody else ever has -- not to say he'll ever be as universally known as Michael Jordan, but it's true -- he absolutely transcends basketball in a _unique_ way, and if you're a basketball fan, you're truly privileged to get to watch this man play this game. It's unequivocally beautiful.

His mother's voice is so pleasing. Like, she could just talk and you'd fall asleep blissfully. I always knew growing up in the 80's after watching players like the Dream and Dikembe that African players would one day really vie for basketball dominance against African-Americans. They have the genes, they just don't have the resources and experience. But things are changing. There are SO many stars of African ancestry in the NBA from Oladipo, Bam Adebayo, Joel Embiid, Giannis, Biyombo, Luol Deng, Ibaka, Al-Farouq Aminu, Siakam, Evan Fournier, Ian Mahinimi,etc...

Those are the guys you want, who arent ashamed to empty themselves completely physically and emotionally to help the team win. And this is coming from a Raptors fan who went crazy after Kawhi's dagger and is grateful for the talents of Cameroon's Pascale Siakam. One thing Masai Ujuri has recognised is that its very beneficial for a team to have a working relationship with African emerging talent

shine my african brother shine. We have already seen what athletic beasts Cameroon are on the football field. I would love to see Cameroon also become a basketball force to reckon with..

If I didn't watch this I would of been very ignorant about how hard some paths are to being a successful superstar. No family, language barriers, no friends around so much easier to go back home and forget about it. But no, he persevered and didn't give up. Just makes me look at Joel with a lot more respect, he really is the dream.

9:40 If you grew up in Africa in the 80s and your family didn't have 3 or 4 of those old albums that you brought out EVERY damn time you had a guest, then you didn't grow up in Africa in the 80s.
