TL;DR: Those are not the same people who made old Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Simple as that.

Basically this. They lost all the talented people ages ago. Bioware is just a name now. And a tarnished one at that. I'd love to see what the Bioware of the old days (BG2/Kotor) would think of games like Inquisition and Andromeda.

I think that the problem lies more with BioWare than people realize. BioWare got 6 years to work on Anthem. How is a game that has been in development for 6 years with the funding of EA this broken and bad? I agrea that EA have been making BioWares games worse, but we have to remember that BioWare are the developpers not EA.

There were multiple red flags we heard about before it came out but people refused to see it. The moment they lost the main writer was when people should have jumped ship because they same thing happened to destiny and we all know how that turned out.

A lot of the "BioWare" sloths are EA interns. So point is moot. BioWare is dead, the original talent left, they had to beg some to come back to salvage stuff like Andromeda, including the lead ME writer.

1:30 "But it wasn't until they were acquired by Electronic Arts that they made the games we remember them most fondly for". I have to disagree with you on that one. There are people old enough that their fondest Bioware memories are from: Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 (Published by Interplay Entertainment / Black Isle Studios) Neverwinter Nights (Published by Infogrames/Atari) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Published by Lucasarts) Jade Empire (Published by Microsoft Game Studios) Mass Efect 1 and 2 and Dragon Age Origins are great games, but their success was probably built on the foundation laid by their great early library. It was well known that Bioware could make great RPGs by the time EA acquired them.

They really haven't been a great studio for almost a decade. ME2 and Origins were the last true Bioware games we'll ever get. It is an impossibility that the studio will ever release something of this caliber again unless they rehire all the people who were involved in developing and writing those games, as they are basically all gone. Truth is Bioware lacks the talent, plain and simple. Everyone always wants to blame EA. Yes EA is a bad company, but Bioware had 6 YEARS to develop Anthem and look how it turned out. Games like the witcher 3 and the division 2 took half of the time and they are way more polished. Bioware isn't the company we use to love. It's time to face the facts and move on.

I agree completely with you, BioWare as we knew them are gone. Mass effect will always be my favourite series minus andromeda and mass effect 2 will probably be my favourite game ever for a long time. But the people who made them games are not the same BioWare we have today’ it’s just unfortunate that they left mass effect in such a state what with the ending to 3 and andromeda. You only have to play the good mass effect games, dragon age origins, kotor, jade empire and baldurs gate 2 realise just how completely different BioWare is now.

@Eric Heinz Yes they lost a lot of great talent. Mainly their lead writer Drew Karpyshyn who wrote ME1 and 2 and all the good mass effect books. Him and other prominent Bioware talent have gone to Archetype Entertainment to work on a new science-fiction RPG. Bioware is garbage now, and the best thing they have released is a remaster of games that are 8-14 years old that have already been proven to be good 8-14 years ago.

BioWare has been dead to me for a long time now, too many of its talented and original members have gone and left, with some far-left nutcases here and there. Dragon Age has not been good since the first game and they let an inferior and clearly less-experienced branch of the studio work on Andromeda. It is going to be nigh impossible to ever expect another KOTOR in the true vein of the originals, much less with EA around.

Dragon Age 2 sucked major ass. Not only they retconned Ander's personality so hard he might as well have been another character, they made everybody Bi just because and then proceeded to restraint the whole Magic vs Normal issue to a single city, almost dismissing the big Darkspawn horde that tried to detroy the entire southern continent for a petty fight against a templar commander that lasted almost an entire boring decade. Not even mentioning the repetitive dungeon design, darkangst-teenager companions and limited dialog options that reduced your Hawke into either a witty asshole, and asshole or a saint. God that game sucked. Inquisition was so big and empty, retconned so much of DAO lore and characters while also ignoring the "problematic" parts that I barely even finished it. Haven't touched a Bioware game since then.

Baldurs Gate was almost 20 years ago. Most people are not going to work for the same company that long, and those that will probably lost the passion already. @@Tilted_Krow dude... DA2 is just bad compared to DAO... And Inquisition is a travesty compared to DA2. Character? What character? Where in that god damned SJW trash did you see any character? In the obviously transexual side-side-side-side-character that is obviously trans and did I mention she's trans? Because the game did say she's trans, have I mentioned she's trans again? Or let's talk about the romance options, the numerous 0 options... making the romancing of your god damned sister in DA2 look all the more justified, not like she had the only piece of valid personality and arc in both the god damned games. Okay, let's move on to the antagonists. Let's discuss how a whole god damned game built around one boss, who's disappointing, to say the least, because, again, it was done better in a DLC of the previous fucking game. The same boss... done better, with better story and development than the whole of Inquisition. And the story? Are you kidding? It's DA1+2 mashed together with cum-stained tissues and served on a brown-crusted, foul stench plater. Having elements of both and somehow making both feel worse for that matter. The only redeeming quality of Inquisition is its majestic fucking dragons. But even that is reduced to rubble by the fact that it's in this fucking game. Because let's not forget, while the dragon fights were beyond this dumpster fire in both magnitude and effort, the fucking horrible *grind* you had to do in order to get to them *barely* made up for the fight itself. To this day I still love the frigging desert dragon, but at the same time, I despise the fetch quests I had to do to get to it. And if I think better myself, this is the feeling this dumpster fire left me, disgust. Disgust that I finished this game. Disgust that I cannot ask for my money back, disgust that I didn't just fucking pirate it, disgust that even if I did, I still played it.

No, I do not think so. I think that the exponential growth of paying "gamers" in the past decade and a half has allowed a culture of wastefulness to grow and permeate in the games industry. Just like the "online journalism" industry have now faced reality, so will the games industry in large. When the world as a whole has legislated away some of the more lucrative abuses the industry currently employs, then wasteful culture will not survive. EA, Bioware, Activision, and so on. All of these companies will be forced into a brutal reality once their morally bankrupt method of making money is either illegal or taxed appropriately. Sadly, the effective and goal-oriented culture is nowhere to be seen in tripple A. Even CDPR, while being the least corrupt, has shown to have a culture of wastefulness. Of the big developers, CDPR is the only one that might survive the onsetting reality. But the rest will slowly die while refusing to face the reality that their world was a castle made of clouds. Reason is that the people in power of these cultures will work very hard at remaining in power. The talented developers who actually support the corrupt and leeching masses will find better jobs, and eventually the only people left will be the ones who contributes little and takes a lot. Once this becomes true, then the companies will go bankrupt in a few years while having nothing to show for it. Perhaps investors will become wiser and replace the corrupted and stupid people (note: stupid, not lacking in intelligence). However, I doubt it. EA and Bioware is the same. They are the children of a upwards unsustainable growth. Anthem has a core that is fantastic. But they need to rework how they employ that core fundamentally. Unless they provide expansions and fixes on a scale that has never before even been falsely promised, then Anthem is a dead game. I bought the game for the same reason I bought NoMan'sSky. I bought it because I wanted to play it. Not because I thought the game would be good, but because it is an important entry into the history of gaming. If I had been someone only looking for a good game to play as a hobby, I would have stayed far away from all EA games. Remember that developers has said that EA is not forcing them to do anything. The studio's are themselves are making these bone-headed anti-consumer choices. EA is simply not doing it's job right and allowing the studios to waste time, money, talent, and consumer good-will.

Bioware's problem is that it is a developer that specializes in making single player RPGs that is owned by a publisher that has no interest in making single player RPGs. The result is that EA makes them make games that are not in their wheelhouse and they end up not being very good. Having to use an engine that is unsuitable for RPGs just exacerbates these issues.

Anthem’s problem is deep to the core, there is no easy fix for it. I think the team’s original vision for the game is a single player story driven game, there are some people point out on reddit and discord says the story could be recycled and piece back in from a single player game. However I believe even thought the game was created as it’s original vision, I don’t think it would be as good as Dragon age Origin, mass effect 2, at max it would probably be Dragon age Inquisition level of a game.
@rthj6446

Tbh, Mass Effect 2 showed me why the "pick your own adventure" style of story-telling is so shallow. It is a massive effort that only produces an interaction in which you choose the dialogue that gives you the right type of Exp. It is a method of story-telling that is a frankenstein of movies/series and books. Games is a different medium, and it is better suited for different stypes of story-telling. Bright-spots already exists. Such as making the player feel responsible for the deaths in Spec-ops: The line. However, games has the potential to tell stories that cannot be told by books and movies. Imagine if MEAndromeda only had one predetermined enemy: The death of the frozen crew-members. And through a rogue-esque mechanic, each play-through saw you siding with different factions and doing missions that had predictable but dynamic results on fighting that enemy. Imagine being presented with the choice of either attacking your allies, or letting your crew-mates die in hibernation. And that attack can be covered up if you destroy the entire base with all the occupants (including children), which then retains your diplomatic contact with your allies, but will weaken them against their enemies. Add to that the RNG that someone perhaps survived, and that you risk being outed as the agressor when you try to silence that survivor. Imagine a MEAndromeda in which you actually had to fight to be truthful when making grandiose moral statements. Imagine a game in which if you can fail from refusing to do morally despicable deeds. Imagine a game in which you do not know if you will succeed no matter what path you take. THAT is what story telling in games could be. And that is why Mass Effect/Bioware style of story-telling should not be held as a gold standard, rather a well executed but inheritedly faulty concept. You can still have the binary dialogue interractions, but the characters react to what you the players has done, rather than what choice you picked from a list.
@Dibol1987
@Dibol1987 5 лет назад
Going to say “hell no” on RNG for story-based games. My success or failure in the story should not be dictated by the role of the computer’s dice roll. Mass Effect 2 would have failed badly with the fans and the critics if your squadmates died randomly in the suicide mission despite making proper preparations.

This is me reading between the lines, so take it with a grain of salt. The issue Bioware is going through is likely that they have an in-house culture that no longer think they make games for the consumers. My interpretation is that they view the company as existing for the employees, and their consumers/fans are simply there to pay into the revolving system. My reasons for thinking this is the hard-line SJW that seems to permeate both EA and Bioware, but that they at the same time has no real issue with incorporating gambling mechanics. In ideological terms they are employing the negative sides from to opposed perspectives: social responsibility and capitalism. My conclusion is therefore that each project starts out with a sort of exploratory surgery in which it is more important to foster a good employee - project lead relationship, than to rationalize and fulfill part-way goals. This in the end results in the rumored "closing team" coming in and sewing together a game from all the unfinished sub-sections of the original and forgotten vision. While this speaks to a greater part of the industry as well, the issue is that the end result has far to easy a time to make money no matter the actual and objective quality. The money-woes that the industry has, has nothing to do with profits, rather the comparative profits. What the industry needs is for economic reality to set in. Which means that the infested in-house culture will be shown as less important than producing a good and competitive product. What it sadly needs is for companies that waste time and resources pursuing lofty and unrealistic goals, to be faced with the economic down-wards thrust that requires firing and slimming down both in the executive sector as well as the department sector. Leaders of the type in control at EA and Activision needs to be removed from the industry. Culture that leads to the hiring of people like Anita Sarkeesiaan (or however it is spelled) needs to be removed in it's entirety. I bought Anthem, and the core of a fun combat mechanics are there, the implementation and polish is horrendous. I will keep an eye on the game, but I do not think they will be able to fulfill the promise. So I will merely discuss it. The issue is that games for the past 15 years have only managed to sell the potential, not the realization, of what customers are longing for in a game. Games might focus on one aspect, but instead of reaching the basic quality in other aspects, they produce something that no matter how that one focused aspect playes out, the game in it's entirety is brought to it's knees. We saw it in Fallout 4. We saw it in ME Andromeda, we saw it in NoMan'sSky, and we saw it in The Division, Anthem, Sea of Thieves, and so many other games. Developers in general know how to do all these puzzle-pieces, but they cannot do it in the time they have. And that time is getting shorter since they now have to wade through a figurative sea of stupid opinions, meetings, and employees/bosses. Perhaps we will one day see a game that has "emergent game-play", engrossing stories, Mod-support, good combat, deep customization, and a large and interesting map with secrets, stories, and so on. The reason why games in the past 15 years suck ass, is the same reason why Star Wars now also sucks. There are too many people with no idea of what they are doing, with influence to side-track and derail the projects. Tl;dr: Bioware, like many other gaming companies, are a lot of time and money on projects that have little to nothing to do with creating good games. It is not a new situation. But as the companies grow, people with stupid ideas take up ever more space. The issue is that the production of games with these sizes of teams and from these well-known companies are a rather safe bet as to recuperating the costs. Stupid people make stupid choices at all levels, often in ideological opposing reasons. The industry needs to rationalize and slim down, and finally perhaps even realize the actual reason why they exist and why people buy their products.

We didn't have wifi or ability to hook up my 360 to the internet, I expected it to be like every other Bioware game to pick it up and continue my narrative instead because I didn't have the ability to play online on the Dragons Keep I found out that I couldn't. So I returned it.

BioWare is gone. All the guys from the BioWare we knew and love? Gone. They had games for everyone: -You want a DnD experience? Baldur’s Gate is for you. -You want Multiplayer/MMO experience? Neverwinter Nights and Star Wars The Old Republic is for you. -You want a good non-memeable Star Wars experience and even if Star Wars isn’t for you still a great RPG experience for the Xbox? KotOR is for you. -You want a hole new experience in an eastern setting with great story, simple but effective game- and roleplay and some of the best shading imo? Jade Empire is for you -You want some traditional fantasy stories with great characters? Dragon Age Origins is for you. -You are tired from Star Trek Discovery being the worst Trek of all time and want to experience a hole new Sci-Fi universe? And even if story-driven RPGs aren‘t your thing you still want some brilliant Third-Person-Shooter gameplay? Mass Effect Trilogy is for you. -You want a bad Destiny clone? Anthem is for you...
@narutorasbat

So... are we pretending Jade Empire never happened? Also this is probably an unpopular opinion but I think Bioware downfall began not with Dragon Age 2 but with Mass Effect 2, while the game is great on his own it took away way too many roleplaying elements, it had a lot of grinding for resources and the focus on recruiting characters took away from the writing of the actual story, I mean, a suicide mission where it's possible for everyone to survive? Virmire was more of a suicide mission than the ending of ME2.

Sadly, I don’t have a positive idea on their future. Anthem is essentially the Battlefield Hardline that EA made Visceral Studios make and well...look how that ended. My sad belief is that EA will plan to shut them down. It’s not a matter of if. Only when. It’s just what EA is. A deplorable company that’ll buy you, twist and destroy everything that makes you good, and then just offs ya. My hope is that EA will give them time, but let’s face it. The first bit of news about Dragon Age 4 since it’s teaser was about the damn multiplayer. Not to mention Bioware Montreal wasn’t full of, in my opinion, very good people. I feel like Bioware is becoming full integrated into the EA machine and when the time comes, EA will happily shut them down. My only hope is that Dragon Age 4 comes out, is awesome, and I can at least have that conclusion to a great story before EA does Bioware in
@aserta

Good. About time that rotten carcass was moved away from the line. The more EA kills, the more their nature is revealed, making people less willing to touch their smelly products. I want EA dead, and that can't happen without the death of the husks they suck on.
@thenethralking6032
@thenethralking6032 5 лет назад
aserta I don’t wish death on Bioware, however, with how they have fallen, I only see two possible outcomes for it that’ll at least return some dignity: either it splits away from EA like Bungie did with Activition, which is extremely unlikely, or they close down and just stop. If Bioware does finally close down, with how low EA has dragged it and how it has allowed itself to be dragged down, I can’t say I’ll cry when Bioware closes. As I said before and will say again, the only saving grace for Bioware, to me, is the next Dragon Age. I heard a lot of ideas they have been pouring into that game that I, already, absolutely love and hope they will continue with it. However, as I said in my first comment, the first bit of news about it after the teaser was about a pointless multiplayer that, let’s face it, unless they actually get creative and do some really awesome stuff with it, has no place in a Dragon Age game. Not to mention that, after the teaser, some people went and asked the people involved not to go SJW on the writing, and the response from the head was “I wear my heart on my sleeves and I will continue to do so”, or words to that effect. While that alone isn’t something to be concerned about, looking back on his history and learning his politics makes me....VERY CONCERNED. Not as bad as Montreal, certainly not. But still very concerning. As far as I’m concerned, DA4 will by the deciding factor to me whether Bioware still has got the touch or if I’ll be ready to see EA give it the axe

While I'm not 100% knowledged on why original team members have left, I would think it might be to do with these direction changes and that if control was completely brought back to Bioware then these old guys might even want to return? All a good Bioware game needs are good writers that understand the lore of a franchise, then other departments really just need competent workers (and some talented voice actors). Of course, a talented sound director and artist are also very important, but to be honest, even Anthem seems to have gotten those things right (at least on the artist side).

Like I think they could take a few ques from other games like GW2 and ESO on game play and cashshop. But I love the story thus far and the thing I love about mmos is an ongoing story to a char I created instead of one created for me like Revan. And the only way the story for a char I created to continue is in an mmo. That is one of the main reasons why mmos are so appealing is you are the charater creator not the publisher.

Pretty simple actually, all of the talented people who made Bioware great starting with the Baldur's Gate series back in 1998 have left. Now it appears to be a bunch of EA robots who lack the talent and passion for creating RPGs the original Bioware founders had. It's shocking how far the talent has dropped when you look at something like KOTOR or Baldur's Gate 2 compared to modern day Bioware, it's like night and day in the difference in quality. Unfortunately Bioware is dead, for some reason people think that there's this awesome Bioware from 2003 chomping at the bit, just waiting for their chance to shine......sorry, but they're all gone.

BioWare is nothing more than just a name. All the talented and important people left a long time ago. As far as Anthem goes, a lot of the issues are BioWares fault. The only things EA are most likely responsible for are shifting the games genre from a single player game to an open world looter shooter, giving BioWare 7 years to make the game then delay it so the devs have more time, cutting up the game because BioWare wasn't going to finish, and require some sort of in game monetization. I know we like to say "EA bad company ruining everything" but honestly sometimes the devs ruin the game.

Not to mention the one note characters and unfinished story

The myth that single player was dying was pure corporate bullshit just like the excuse of high development costs. Take for example what happened with Mass Effect Andromeda - they outsourced some of the rendering to a Chinese company which used different 3D software so the facial animations and movement glitched. How friggin dumb and cheap do you have to be to do something like that? Maybe if they spend less on marketing and more on actual development we'd finally stop seeing 15-120 minute RU-vid videos of people shitting on them. Until then, preach man.

A simple answer ? Before Bioware were creating brand, since DA2, they're just following them. Swotor was created way too late and was outdated at launch and, as, Anthem, was just following a trend. Anthem got 7 years of development and is a mess, can't be compared to any of its concurrent. The problem don't come from EA. Bioware is just an overhyped studio since several years.

EA is a huge problem of course, but the main issue is the fact that the very talented people who made the classic Bioware games are long gone from the company. Turning an MMO into a heavily focused story choice driven quest line with far reaching ramifications to the future of the story and future content/updates. (Though as a launch player yes it was bad lmao) I played day one and oh boy.
@HickoryDickory86

The thing is, it didn't have to be either/or. There was enough passion, time, and money for a both/and approach. LucasArts could have greenlit Obsidian to proceed with KotOR 3 (which they desperately wanted to do, and still do) while allowing BioWare to move ahead with SWTOR. Parhaps both games could have been a joint effort between both studios in that Chris Avellone and Drew Karpyshyn could co-write the story for both games so that what happens in KotOR 3 would have naturally and organically fed into what happens in SWTOR. So you have KotOR fans happy and satisfied that they have the third and final installment of the (still unfinished) single-player RPG trilogy while feeding those who are also MMO fans into SWTOR if they desire to continue the story. And for those who come to SWTOR as new players, to story beats and references may cause them to want to back up, purchase, and play the previous KotOR games to get a better handle on what's going on, why, and how. This would have practically printed money for everyone involved. Seriously, LucasArts at this time was just woefully inept and out of touch. They were terribly mismanaged by people who had no passion for Star Wars and the stories being told.

While fun, it seemed weird to me that Shepard spends so much time in the game collecting interesting npcs for a suicide mission when in fact he should have been collecting ships & a kick ass fleet. He knows the reapers are coming, and its the sovereign class ships that are the true threat. I guess they wanted to put that part off for ME3. They didnt know what to expect past the Omega relay. If they had encountered an entire collector fleet, they would have been screwed. A company of space marines can handle the occasional hand to hand fighting or ship invasion.
