What Happened to Digi-Burst? (Digimon TCG Analysis) 

Bandai does a survey for every set and for everyone I put "Don't forget about Digi-Burst."

Digi-Burst was just discarded because the loss of evolution sources would imply a huge payoff given that inherited effects are the core of the game pretty much. They carry a lot of value, ie the mechanic is prone to powercreep more than any other in the game (even nowadays). The matchup vs Blue would also be unplayable due to their source ripping playstyle if Digi-Burst became a core gameplay mechanic in a given deck. I would say you're pretty spot on. The mechanics was rather interesting but it unfortunately conflicted with many core aspects that were already established since the beginning of the game.

Small corrections. I showed Royal Nuts at 2:13 as an example of a Digi-Burst support card and didn't catch it was actually digisoprtion. My bad idk how I totally missed that lol. Thank you to top purple player Tesero for pointing it out! BT5 MetalGaru also only works on digivolving which I completely forgot. The theory is still supported by the promo burst BWG but I'm really sorry for making that mistake lol! Gonna have friends preview the videos from now on before posting. 😅

There's a chance green might continue the mechanic and make it semi-exclusive similar to raid, since all the bt14 green insects seem to have no inheritable. it might be a fun way to take insects as a whole to make them stick out more

1. On Digiburst weakening Black. This is only true if Digiburst is used in all colors. Clearly they designed the mechanic to be a mostly Green effect, which would just lead to lopsided matchups when some archetypes face off: the way EVERY card game works. 2. It strengthens Blue. See above, this just leads to some archetypes having stronger matchups. As long as digiburst is designed to mostly be in one color or archetype, this shouldn't matter. 3. Yeah, this makes sense. Man, X-Antibody really just messes up a lot of this game, doesn't it? It even makes de-digivolve weaker since the targeted digimon won't lose as many levels. I don't know, it seems like if Bandai just kept Digiburst as a Green-centric effect (or just its own archetype), it wouldn't be that bad. It's a really cool mechanic, and it sucks that it's been forgotten. Unlike mechanics that get abandoned in other TCGs, I don't think Digiburst is problematic. I'd like to see it make a return.

I'd like to see some support for Yellow Rasenmon at some point. The deck is long powercrept as far as I can tell but I really like Rasenmon and it's line, so some support to make it a bit more relevant again someday would be cool.

I mean I will note there was an honorary digiburst archetype after all the ones you mentioned. Bagra Army. They were just designed intentionally somewhat parasitic, and didn't use the digiburst keyword, instead just using the text without the keyword. Which really points to the keyword having been fully killed. Because otherwise it'd be extremely simple to word the big ones as digibursting.

12:28 " (Game) mechanics come and go" *8 days later Blossommon, one of the only meta relevant card that uses digi burst got restricted. Proving that Bandai tried to move off of the old mechanics HE IS THE MESSIAH!!

One more reason could be that they might got feedback that the mechanic was not well received. There is a rather famous game design talk with a lead designer from MtG. He talked about a card, that could increase its stats by discarding cards from your hand. Balance wise, the card was perfect. Good enough to be considered for many players, but also not oppressive. Why was it not well received? Because players want to USE THEIR CARDS! Not throw them away to play with a single buffed card and nothing else.

I think Digi Burst is still here... sort of, now its just a non keyword archetype effect. Bagra Army functions pretty similarly except the Burst happens in a "counter" window and the inherited effects don't have to be trashed by Burst specifically. Too bad the strategy is seriously weak right now, it definitely needs some more variety in the inherited effects and a second functional tamer.

Hi! New to the game here. It's sad I won't try Digi-burst as it looks like a great mechanic. It reminds me of XYZ monster in Yu-Gi-Oh. It makes of sense the theories for the mechanic being scrapped.

For me its gotta be 2 things that made them rethink 1-the introduction of same level evolution cards introduced in set 9 which can let players abuse Digi-burst effects unless they make them all once per turns which then cripples them cause an effect intended to be used twice suddenly can either be used once or more than twice (hence breaking it). 2-inhertibles started to become a must especially since BT6 when archetypes started to properly form and you needed certain pieces for your gameplan cause before BT6 everyone ran some vanillas at the level 4 and/or level 5 slot due to their cheap evo cost. Do I think Digi-Burst can come back, yes but it would have to be designed differently as in Digi-burst cards with different levels being mentioned in the text and the effect would have to be worth it. Digi-Burst decks can have the niche of being able to run efficient vanillas and then going into a powerful digimon before your opponent. Sounds quite like a green I know. But the trade off here is that these digimon are major glass cannons cause once they’re out of steam they become vanillas.

I honestly hope they bring digi-burst back in some form. I think that if they wanted to create a strong deck that would work to a slow the recent explosive metas, something like bt5 green would be great. I also think it would be a cool strategy for a control deck to digi-burst out an ace card and pass the turn while debuffing the opponent with a stun or dp minus. I really think the mechanic isn't a lost cause (especially with the possibility of a card that can digi-burst at counter timing) and I hope that it makes a return. It doesn't even need to be meta defining, but something that gives interesting effects that makes up for its weaknesses and bad match ups.

wait, I'm confused with the black metalgarurumon in that deck you showed near the end. I'm pretty sure the when digivolving effect was only allowed to activate once.

i mean tbh makes sense, with how good inherited skills are now and blue can just remove so much and that strong cards need certain amount

My personal take on digiburst is that it could be updated, but there needs to be an archetype dedicated to it with at least 2, if not all of the following: • 2- colors so you are not limited to the tool set of only one color. • Jogress access so you can double your stack to burst away • Reduce the cost of the burst to 1 for regular effects, 2 for good ones, and 3 for op ones, but just a few of those, maybe only in the level 6-7 • Make the effects on the digimon good or busted, but give them no inheritables at all, if they have one that will alter the balance of the card and we won't get a worthy effect for the burst. Atm, my mind goes to the Red Purple imperial line, as an already established archtype to add burst to, since they already can evolve from the discard and have recovery from it too, with access to jogress and 2 colors, it's already half way there for a cool burst archetype.

You could've also added jogress/Dna digivolution here since they basically double the sources like X-antibody. Could you also imagine if we got those for imperial?

Shame it hasnt gottren much support considering how cool it is as a concept. All it needs is some protection from blue and a good enough payoff (but not as broken grankuwagamon) and it would probably see more play. Especially such a shame how little support herissmon got despite how big his role was in the games.

Completely unrelated to video, but I hope one day we get a dedicated Wormmon deck, basically with a focus on Wormmon and Stingmon without Veemon and Imperialdramon. As cool as Imperialdramon is, Wormmon is my absolute favorite digimon and I'd love a viable deck with just Wormmon's main line (or something close)

4:26 yeah i experience that loyal play black color set try all type easily brick among all deck, keep loosing non stop since its most slowest deck among all, hard to counter almost all deck… finally at set 9 finally black xantibody getting its own meta deck 😥 and that time back to back i obliterate everybody with my alphamon deck all those frustrating playing my fav set color…😢

Black is a bit weak as it has Right now two main decks. Alphamon who was a good deck... By also stealing cards from the dorumon line. Black war greymon... Which stole a lot of red cards to buff itself and red stealing those cards to also buff itself. Digibust while a neat concept just didn't have enough value to compete with the other keywords... Made a bit worse due to the x-evolution cards adding more to the digibust buff.

Digisoption disappeared as well. Though based Grandis is the only deck actually using digi burst

Simple - Progression of the game. I do feel that Digi-Burst would be one of the best ways to introduce more opponent's turn interaction instead of the broken AF ACE mechanic. You could simply have an [Opponent's Turn] to interact with them on their turn, it costs 0 memory to do and doesnt introduce any new mechanics to the game.

Put simply, digiburst sucked. I think the only way theyd make it viable again is if they were (oppononents turn) effects.
