Lol was listening to it as I walked had to stop to look at my phone, cuz the image in my head didnt match what I heard. Been so many years but lol it's still there.
I think that banning that episode was a huge mistake. I was about 8 when I first saw it, and it stuck better than any lesson or lecture. I still perfectly remember his look of horror when he realized what he did, 20 years later.
Me: **as a kid walking around on my tip-toes with a towel wrapped around my shoulders** Adults: "Oh, how cute. She's practicing wearing high heels." Me: "One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled..."
Whenever I played a game with my brother and lose, I'd yell "I've been denied everything, EVEN MY REVENGE!" I'm surprised this hasn't become a meme by now.
Keith David does not get the recognition he deserves as an actor and voice over actor. He made Spawn come to life and gargoyles. GIVE THIS MAN HIS ROSES NOW!
MY FAVORITE ACTOR OF ALL TIME, MOSTLY BECAUSE IVE LITERALLY RUN INTO HIM OVER 20 TIMES!!! NOT JUST IN LA!! HES THE NICEST GUY IRL, AND HES NEVER TOO BUSY OR UNAPPORACHABLE TO HAVE A CONVO WITH! SO MANY ICONIC ROLES TOO!! GREAT GUY.
Shit. I'd seen Xanatos Gambit on TV Tropes all the time, but I completely forgot that was Jonathan Frank's character name on Gargoyles. I always thought it was some obscure comic book character I didn't know, cause it's always next to "Batman Gambit."
No revival, unless it's made for the same people it was made for originally. As in us. Not the people the ages we were. Disney cartoons today aren't clever and dark like this any longer, because the bitch groups that whine incessantly and Disney's need to be friendly for all at that level. If it was made for the millennials, and therefore maintained its original dark, mature themes, then yeah, I could go for a revival.
You know... This has me thinking. If they got a team together that put in the same level of effort that was on the Mandalorian, I'd be down for an even more mature (but not overtly so) live action adaption. Of course I don't see it working without some original writers involved. Worst case scenario, it ends up crap and we can forget it exists or have some memes on hand. Best case scenario we get the new form of one of the best premises we've had to see from Disney.
"when goliath, elisa and bronxe where taken to the island of avalon from arthurian legend, where they had to fight a time traveling wizard, and three wyrd sisters alongside king arthur" and thus the birth of my love of mixing high and urban fantasy together and mangling old mythologies to tell really cool stories about cybernetically enhanced myth heroes was born, thanks gargoyles
@@saibgassanov3378 um, for time travel, i'd recomend the time machine, by h.g. wells, the movie is alright, but the books go further into depth than the movie, and are a bit different, as for urban fantasy, dresden files are pretty good, while i've never read it i heard good things about the ahriman trilogy, i've heard it's like buffy meets h.p. lovecraft, also anything by h.p. lovecraft usually takes place in the 30's or so as that's when he was around, i think, i'm bad with dates, then theirs the alex verus series by benedict jaka, i can't think of much more at the moment, but if you just google urban fantasy you'll find a lot of modern day fiction, fantasy and horror novels
Demona definitely did experience plenty of prejudice over that millennium. But more than that she experienced the predictable consequences of her terrible terrible choices. She's one of the all-time greatest villains.
@@the_exegete And the years of prejudice she experienced led her into making her own prejudice herself; that all humans are evil and that they all must die. If you think about it she is the only Disney hero to turn into a villain! Her ways were extreme yes, but she had in mind to do something good for her kind. It all started with her plan. What did she want? She aimed for the castle to be sacked so her people would live free and well. And then her plan backfired her and her fall started. She gained only a small ray of hope with Macbeth but even then she felt threatened and distrustful and eventually all her gathered prejudice exploded when her general idea of humans being the root of all evil burst when she saw that Elisa was exactly that exception that ruined all her cosmotheory. It drove her to madness entirely along with the rejection of her clan and so she turned into one of the most iconic and complicated villains out there!
i remember the advertising, i remember begging my mom to get me some, i was so excited to take it to school and try it....just to find out i don't like em. man that was disappointing
Hi. Just one thing: the entire Avalon World Tour arc was conceived as a way to create multiple spin-offs to compete with Fox’s Marvel Animated Universe. They had plans for multiple spin-offs such as The New Olympians, The Dark Ages, Gargoyles 2198, Bad Guys, Timedancer, and more. Most of these were set up in the World Tour.
I'm so upset they didn't go through with the Timedancer arc, Brooklyn kept getting shafted romantically. It would have been nice to see him with a wife and kids.
I think that if you are going to blame Disney for destroying it, you also have to credit them for creating it. But I get it, it's fun and cool to bitch about Disney, even if your comments are only half-true.
9:22 - 9:30 "Xanatos was a clever entrepreneur that was always working on strategies so that he would always come out winning in the end, even when he appears to lose." In fact, the birth and namesake of the Trope, "Xanatos Gambit", was from this very character and his ability to "win even if they lose".
god it's weird seeing gargoyles content being recommended to me in 2019. seriously, though, best show of my childhood! i only wish i would've been allowed to go to the convention, but i was younger than most fans
thanks to disney+ since now there is a proper way to watch and anyone can access without either needing to dig up old dvds or stream illegally from free sites which can also have its own share of problems from virus leaks to hacked info if not careful.
@@the_exegete note on word "proper way to watch" for it. i did a quick search here on youtube for the full epsidoes with majority of them did the following. audio altered, sped up slightly (hell episode 1 season one is that on here from get go.) image flipped, split into multiple parts, double screened (one small version with in back another larger one.) or zoomed in. short: all of this to avoid video taken down. none will fully upload original ratio, unedited video because they know it will be taken down quickly. ppl can watch it sure but most of the vids i look up is a mess to be honest.
@@dungeonmaster16 Ah, that's too bad. The unaltered series was easy to find on YT for quite awhile, but I guess some Diz beancounter finally got around to pulling them down. It's nice that it's on Diz+ at least, but I'd trade a toe or two for a definitive physical release. DVD I suppose, since it's hard to imagine Bluray would do the animation any good.
@Carne Guisada i disagree with him too but your outburst is quite frankly pathetic and childish, now YOU look like a bigger fool than @Christopher Rivera
id like to see some new gargoyle stuff but with some polished up animation with more detail and made for older teens/young adults so it can maintain its edge without watering down to kiddy lvl and it needs a good story behind it, not just random filler episode's because that would realy suck. to be honest at this point id already be happy just to be able to binge watch the first 2 seasons again, Lucky for me i never saw the third season because it did'nt air here in the Netherlands or i must have just mist it for some reason but i would love to have a chance to watch this again, i dont know if there are any sites that have such old episode's on archive but if anyone knows where i can watch this please let me know about it.
Meanwhile, I started binging and my wife said "that theme sounds familiar.....holy shit, are you watching Gargoyles?!?!?" Last couple days have been fun lol.
Easily one of the best animated series Disney has ever made, if not THE best, because it responds to the needs of teaching morality to kids but being appealing to older audiences too. It was back then when Disney was not aiming always into sugar-cotting reality for children but also created some really dark stuff in the middle, creating some characters that are hard to pass unnoticed. For instance Demona could be the first actual character that started off as a good character to actually become a villain straight out and she also has some things right in her madness. Goliath has his dark moments even if he is the typical hero of the story and even Xanathos was proved to be a man of his word as he transfered from the beginning of being a villain, to becoming an anti-hero to actually help out the Manhattan Clan, keeping his word at them after they saved his son. The series explores so many delimas and makes you think of many things, many different characters growing up and gaining more and more from their lives. Broklyn became from a normal teenager-like personality to a very strong and determined leader (still keeping his playful side) Broadway discovered new levels of bravery while he wasn't the fighting type before (it takes a load of braveness to admit that you shot someone! And then he became more responsible as a person) even Lexington became a very highly developed personality who discovered new talents and one of them apart from technology was his talent into being a parent, taking care of Alex and truly doing everything for him... Yes some people indeed notice that the writing was not as good in the third season but Greg had stopped working on the series by that time and anyway the series didn't lose the charm it had. We still see that the line between "good" and "bad" is too thin and that you still need to make some harsh decisions when you do your duty. Also it was proven that revenge always brings back revenge and that happened a lot with Demona, whose thirst for revenge only brought more revenge against her and her kind while Goliath nearly lost everyone he held precious in his chase after revenge against those who hurt him and his family. I loved those times when Disney and animated series in general didn't insult children's intellect and did offer them something that was not always about flowers and sugar. Sure, Disney never abandoned the "villain and heroes" concept and stuff but still Gargoyles shows how much appearances sometimes do make a difference, how discrimination can cause huge disasters, shows consequences of wars and struggle etc. And of course the animation is really good (and hand-drawn! Many people miss that!), music was stunning, the lore behind them was amazing and extremely detailed as well as the exploring of the characters' behaviors and their growth in the new world was unquestionably beautiful. Ah, I miss this type of series!
I’m in my mid/late thirties, and Gargoyles was a huge staple in my life during the 90’s. It did so much good for my development as a person for so many reasons. I’ve loved and related to so many cartoons/tv shows before Gargoyles’ era, during, and afterwards; but the effect this show had on me echoes pretty distinctively til this very day, and I’m extremely appreciative in the most humble way for everyone who made this show happen...even down to the studio’s janitors for keeping the workplaces clean. They made it possible for the crew to come in each morning to a nice clean space to do what they did best and expertly. Thanks you all ❤️
EXACTLY. growing up with firearms in the home, I was SCREAMING at Broadway, and Elisa for leaving it unsecured, during that episode.... Screaming to the point my parents ran into the livingroom in a panic.
Thanks for catching that, I thought I was the only one. For someone who's supposed to be educating us on Gargoyles, he's made a lot of unforgivable mistakes huh??
Maybe check your replies. I already told you that Xavier was his early development name, since I was talking about that. I say Xanathos multiple times later on once I get to actual Xanathos.
@@Foxcade Fun fact: when they changed Xavier to Xanatos, they literally just made up the name (based on Thanatos, hinting at Xanatos's real motivations). They were worried that the name sounded too fake, so they checked the phone book and sure enough there was exactly one listing for a Mr. Xanatos. I wonder how that guy feels about his name being permanently associated with the greatest villain of all time.
oh got tears in my eyes, this magical series of Gargoyles got into my soul and as a grown up I can absolutely relate to Goliath's heartbreak and struggles with humankind. It's so profound, it's the best Disney has gotten, and there's the Hunchback of Notre Dame and of course Beauty and the Beast.
I actually liked Gargoyles better than Batman: The Animated Series due to it having long story arcs rather than mostly episodic storytelling. And I am a HUGE fan of B:TAS so that's how amazing I still think Gargoyles is. I need to find the comic run that continued the series beyond S3E1 because. . . well the third season kind of sucked. We can thank ABC for sidelining the creator and bringing in a new art crew.
@@tornadochaser2457 I am unsure as to the meaning of your question. There was a season 3 but it was crap because the creator was sidelined and the animation studio was changed to decrease costs. I think if the same creative team who did S1 and S2 had done a third season that it would have been far better than what we got.
Now there are some things in season three that I did like. I like the idea of having a Gargoyle like KKK clan. You could do a lot of social commentary on that but it was wasted. Also Wiseman said that Xanatos wasn't going to stay good for long. He would have had a twist bad guy turn. Also I wanted to see more of Angela and Demona's relationship if it were continued but we never got it. And maybe a redemption arch for Demona.
I did too, I think it aired in its entirety on one of the Disney channels around that time, and that's where I got hooked on it. For some reason, even though I was of the right age and a huge fan of Batman at the time, I completely missed this show on its first run. I was a big TNG fan too, so would have loved to hear Frakes and Sirtis in the show back then.
Gargoyles was one of my favourite shows back in the day. The only thing that seriously pissed me off is that when they played the first couple of seasons here that the order of the episodes was so completely out of whack it was difficult to make sense of what was going on at times. For example I saw the episode where the gargoyles were dealing the pack after they broke out of prison, a week later they show the episode where Lexington introduced himself to the pack then he and Goliath got lead into a trap! Thankfully play repeat the first two seasons just prior to the release of season 3 and while they didn't quite get all the episodes in proper order at least me to a whole hell of a lot more sense.
I remember during recess a bunch of my friends and I played out our own story from gargoyles. Each of us pretended we were the gargoyle we chose and that was who we pretended to be each and every recess throughout the school year.
I'm not gonna lie: Gargoyles introduced me to fandom and I absolutely created my baby Mary Sue for it. (I firmly believe every kid goes through at least one Mary Sue/Gary Stu as they start forming their own creative understanding of the world, so I never hold anyone under the age of like... fifteen for having one. I think it's important to creative development to get carried away with one.)
I had an OC for almost everything i was a fan of but instead of making a brand new one for every form of media i was a fan of i just changed my OC to fit in that world. years later i looked back at my Sue and decided to make some changes, Retain the name i love but bring the character down a few pegs, give em limits and weaknesses. i went that far might as well make my own world for them
@Knight Krawler a type of female character who is depicted as unrealistically lacking in flaws or weaknesses. Likewise, a Gary-sue is the male version. This term derives from fictional work done for fandoms. I.e fanfics. Naturally, they come off very attractive, overly powerful, and extremely likable by other characters. Things do vary here and there depending on writer, but that's the jest of it.
What happened to Gargoyles is the same thing that happens to every Disney IP. Too many ideas, properties, and assets, but too little people who actually care.
Demona is one of the complicated villain in Disney, her story is really interesting. She was Angel of The Night, her daughter is Angela, their names are designed seriously. I like the moment that Young Demona said she didn’t want to be Future Demona, she used to be kind, but turned into evil by hatred. Though she is evil now, she still wants to protect her daughter, it makes her more humane.
Ah the 90s, golden age of animation. I grew up in mainland China, at the time even we had Disney afternoon too! Gargoyles was really different from the other goofier kiddy shows in the line up. Loved the film noir aesthetic. And slightly spooky for a little kid, part of the charm!
This show got me into William Shakespeare and the entire play Macbeth. I loved how the show ended still miss watching it, thanks for the history lesson on what happened to it.
Dominic Omegon, they probably don’t want to tap this series for a live action movie. However, they ARE adapting Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers for the big screen. It landed a director earlier this year but Akiva Schaffer said it won’t be an origin story or a detective agency story. They most likely want to see how the movie adaptation of that series does before they consider some of their other older cartoon properties.
ugh! sorry but cgi gargoyls might seem like a cool idea at first but in hindsight who remembers any cgi movies from the past, nobody because your brain knows cgi is fake and therefore wont remember it at all, we only remember the animated series because it was 2D animation from japan in a similar edgy style to batman if it would loose that and go completely cgi it would just become a forgettable fantasy/sci-fi flick for the sake of nostalgia but i doubt it would make a whole lot of money and would most likely go directly to netflix just like he-man will. all in all this is a bad idea that will just destroy any nostalgic feelings you might have left for this series is that realy what you want?
last airbender or the other one? if its the latter one i dont realy have a response ready for that, my guess is it was because its was a new thing and it looked so good that it shocked everybody's minds how cgi could be this good and that's probably why we still remember but everything after that was only so so, so nobody cares. Best awnser i can give you right now
I didn't get to see enough of these to realise who the voice actors were, damn! What a cast! I need to watch them all from the beginning, not possible for me back then.
Loved Gargoyles as a little kid. (Was 6 when it first aired, or at least when I first saw it). I got the VHS "movie" which was the five episode pilot that came with a board game attached. I remember loving it as a teenager, and even now as an adult. This show never ever EVER gets old.
Gargoyles was great. The first time I realized how well-loved it was was when I used a picture of their Puck for an English project for Midsummer Night's Dream. I had a wonderful moment during my presentation where I paused because people were reminiscing about Gargoyles and I was so proud for this childhood favourite of mine. And OMG! Reboot! Reboot was great, too! Both series deserved more love since their world-building was so much fun and had so much to play with! This video of yours hit a lot of nostalgia points for me so thanks for making and posting it! I don't need them to remake the old ones, but if they wanted to retcon the last seasons of both series and take up before they went wrong (before the gargoyles got exposed to humans a-la-X-men, and post-Daemon for Reboot) that'd be super awesome and I'd watch that! Provided they got the word out and I realized it was happening.
I used to watch it when the re runs would come on at like 2am on Disney channel Very very nostalgic for this :) Not matter how you feel about the Goliath chronicles no one can hate on it’s opening or the original for that matter Simply brilliant
I wouldn't mind seeing a live action version of this but they have to have Keith David as Goliath or that movie wouldn't work the way the animated show did.
If Warcraft can be made and look as good as it did, then surely Disney can foot the bill for a Gargoyles Franchise of live action films. Although would we want the film to be 90's retro or set in today?? That's my dilemma that I haven't quite decided yet. Though I do know who to use for Elisa Maza. YoYo from A.o.S. Goliath Voice over would be Keith David of course. And Mirina Sirtis as Demona. But when she's human comes the issue. Sirtis is well into her 50's and doubtfully looks like a thirty year old. Even Puck will have to be someone else. Because as much as I love Brent Spiner Make up only goes so far. Micheal Dorn can come back to be Cold Stone. But for Tatania and Xanatos, new actors will be needed. Sorry for rambling; got carried away with the possibilities.
@@pattheman3686 Uh, why not just have Salli Richardson play Eliza in live action? Eliza's design was literally based on her. And as far as I know Natalia Cordova-Buckley isn't half-black.
I Absolutely LOVE The Gargoyles When I Wuz A Kid, Even Had The Full Length Animated Film On VHS... Quality Cartoons Are Rare, Japenese Anime Is The Way Now-A-Days...
"Sir! Our profits are dwindling! People don't care about our stories and anthropomorphic animals anymore!" "Worry not." Say Eisner with a devious grin. "We shall make them all..." *he says as he unveils the plans for Gargoyles and Beauty and the Beast* "... FURRIES."
I’m 47. I was stoked to get to see these again. My son is just turning 21. He is totally addicted to the show and said it was way before its time and stands today as well as back then. He finally had to admit the old shows like this were superior.
I loved Gargoyles, it is easily a contender for my top three favorite American animated shows, I loved it then and I love it now, that being said I hope Disney never reboots it, I have no faith they would do it the justice it deserves. Play to celebrate I have no doubt that would go with some weird looking animation now and given all the things they've been doing their movies I think they would try to take it way too PC. If I honestly thought they would keep it true to the original in style and story depth and quality I would help kick start it....but I have no faith in them for that
One of the things I loved the most about this show was there really were very few "evil for evil's sake" bad guys. With very few exceptions (i.e.the archmage) every bad guy was portrayed in a way that you could understand, in some cases you could even sympathize with how they became who they became. Something that has become more commonplace in today's fantasy stories, but was hard to find in the mid-90s.
Dude this just popped up in my recommended out of nowhere. This was extremely well done. You made me remember how much I loved this show. A show that I haven't thought about in nearly 20(I'm 30) and had nearly forgotten about. Thank you. You have earned a subscriber.
I'm so happy to have grown up right in this era. So many great cartoons. Oh and fruit rollups! Love those. Wait wait was that Marina Sirtis voicing that gargoyle?!
The network change is exactly why it took me years after Gargoyles finished to actually watch all the episodes. Once it was off Saturday Morning, I just didn't have access to it, which is a shame because it's my favorite show even to this day. It wasn't until my aunt installed satellite that I was able to watch it again, but I remember having to wait until 11pm for it to air. I finally got my hands on the dvds only around when I was in high school to finally see the entire thing. Was very glad to learn that nostalgia had not, in fact, rose-tinted my memories of how great the show was. I wouldn't mind if they remastered the 2nd season to touch up on the animation and sound quality though. This show, as well as Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice, cemented my trust to like anything handled by Weisman. I would love it if Disney had him (and the original VA cast, if possible) come back and either remake the 3rd season or just do a 4th season. I just can't trust it to be handled by anyone else.
I'm still intensely conflicted about Gargoyles being on Disney+. On the one hand, yay Gargoyles! On the other, I'm kinda mad at the idea of giving Disney my money for the privilege of watching a show I love that they did dirty.
Having the wings hook together at the front of the body was also great for showing something organic in a subtle way - how they hold their wings while at rest in a natural-looking way that looks like it's only right that they should have evolved to do that. Otherwise, their arms would seem to get in the way (they are technically six-limbed vertebrates, not something you usually see.)
I loved Gargoyles. :) Demona was hands down one of the best written characters Ive ever seen for a Disney tv show. :D The show that hit home for me with her was the episode where she summed everything up to why she did what she did, her password was "alone".
Not only is Disney making reboots of their beloved shows, but recently, I have noticed that recent Disney shows have been referencing Gargoyles, first example being in “Amphibia”, the episode “true colors” has a flash back scene where Marcy is looking at an old book, most people remember this scene for the Bill Cypher cameo, but in that same frame, we saw that the next page had a version of Leonardo DaVinci’s “Perfect Man” with a gargoyle instead of a human, this being an obvious depiction of Goliath, and “Duck Tales” was even more direct, they had a character that was being voiced by the same person who voiced Goliath, and even have the character grow huge bat wings to the actual “Gargoyles” main theme song playing in the background, ending with him saying “I LIVE AGAIN! Again”, I feel like Disney is testing the water to see if people are interested, or maybe people at Disney are actually working on a revival, and make these references out of it being brought up, either case, make fan art, fan fiction, make memes with pictures from the show, let the house of mouse see that we still care about the show, maybe they will do what Netflix did with She-ra, and keep everything the same, only polished, and they don’t mess it up, we could one day see the clan on our screens once more, AND THEY SHALL LIVE AGAIN!
do you know anything about dc owning gargoyles? only reason i ask is because i just watched a newer episode of young justice and in it they had the phoneix gate, odins eye and magaus book
@@charliela1844 as far as google is concerned, Disney owns the rights to the franchise, and the comics were made by Marvel comics, so I am going to go back and finish Young Justice because now I am very curious about this cease and desist worthy reference you just mentioned
I love how the Gargoyles were named after NYC boroughs. When I came to the U.S. as a 9 year old I could not speak any english. I credit the 2 hour Disney block to helping me learn!
