Seriously brilliant video, really like the inclusion of the OWL clips and the less "data dump" style. Smashed it! I think Ana, Brig or Rein would be a good next vid?
@@craigmchenry1477 I actually liked the previous video a lot more, this one breezed through the changelogs so quickly that at few points I had to rewind the video 'cause I thought I missed something.
I've always felt like Genji was high skill, low reward. You can know how to play him but it's very difficult to get consistent value out of him. Nanoblade is the only thing that makes him anywhere near powerful.
Agree. Genji is not worth playing, no matter how good you are with him. The nerfs made him irrelevant, when you can do the same with other dps heroes who require much less effort and skill.
Coming back to OW after 2017 straight to what is now was really something as a Genji-Flex main (I do know couple of heroes, like McCassidy and Soldier and others) and playing Genji feels super weird, feels like there's always a counter on another team. And I'm not bad genji either, like I have some aim, I have game sense, but the fact that I can't solo anyone is destroying he's whole purpose. It feels like the good old days in OW2 however
@@deblxdee Amen to that brother. Feels like I can never win a 1v1 whenever I play Genji. I feel like I can never do enough damage fast enough. It is nice to be able to play him in Overwatch 2 though. He feels good. It’s refreshing.
thats because most of the time u can't play him 2 the full capacity even if u know how to for example depending on who is on the enemy team u have 2 wait for a certain time before popping ult i.e wait for moira dash 2 go down zarya bubble lucio ult zen ult etc there is 2 much shit that genji players have 2 watch out for constantly to do anything effective he is thee most ability gated character in any game ive ever seen his ultimate needs a rework i.e make his dashes do increased damage per kill or do something with the bleed he use 2 have nad he runs way faster cuz robot powers
Been a genji player since launch (ew i know) the dragons cinematic alone is what got me into OW in the first place and I can easily say genji has some of the most fun gameplay out of any hero and his playstyle feels so unique. Once you fully understand his movement/combos he just clicks and serves such a fun role and in my opinion could have one of the highest skill caps in the game, as we've seen from the pros. I just wish Blizzard had the balls to make him good instead of absolutely gutting him by introducing heroes that all seem to have a genji counter in their kit now.
Blizzard doesn't know how to treat people as equal human being. Imagine they knowing how to do a proper balance game with Brig, Sigma and Bap being meta since their launch. This game is a joke if you think more often.
I believe the entire roster in Overwatch is currently specifically made to counter Genji. Overwatch reddit is so scared of Genjis, they had a long and unhealthy effect on the game, when devs listened to their complaints.
@@brenohenrique9743 I pointed that out to that sub actually. I was banned, my tongue, castrated from my skull and forced to wander aimlessly after they smashed my ball with the ban hammer. So they didnt take it well, and little to no self reflection was had.
The one change I want for Genji is frame 1 deflect, because it seriously pisses me off how I'm always getting punished for good timing on my part: I'm really good at anticipating shots/abilities from my enemies, and I almost always activate my deflect right before they shoot me so I have maximum damage with my shurikens, because Genji needs that kind of damage optimisations to do almost anything. But then, half of the time, the sound of deflect plays and I just die. Deflect clearly went off, because there was the sound, but it didn't actually deflect the attack of the guy I'm aiming at. And before people say it's a ping issue, that's probably part of the issue, but definitely not all of it, because deflect often goes on cooldown as I die, meaning the ability was definitely active, and I have had very low ping for years now and keep having this problem whenever I play Genji (which isn't that often, I'm more of a support main nowadays, but still, I'd like to have fun with one of my favourite dps heroes when I do queue for dps, andI can't imagine that I'm the only one experiencing this)
This is definitely an issue for me because to compensate you have to use it early meaning less damage and more predictable. Honestly there’s alot of things they can do for this character to make him viable while still being balanced. Give him this a 20 dmg reduction on dash or give him both cooldowns after blade like doom. Dmg reduction on dash because ideally he’s SUPPOSED to dash through as many people as possible for ult charge yet half the time doing that means you die to random spam or a Moira orb.Doesn’t break the character because how often do you hit Genji while dashing but still helps him survive a bit longer. Giving cooldowns after blade just gives him much more survivability and choices when it comes to getting out or being aggressive.
This as well as another timing thing. When you use dash perfectly to avoid something but take damage from where you were when you dashed instead of where you were going. Visually it looks like you moved from your own view and you can even see the dash effect from others perspective but genji just gets hit from where he was. Making his hurtboxes move to where it ends straight away, would be so much better
Yep, both abilities of Genji are janky and are not consistent. The deflect should definitely work earlier, and the dash should prevent damage from where you are not even at anymore, should work like Tracer. Now those would be good buffs to reward high skill.
@@Koloman-0410 he doesn’t. Only a 2 IQ bastion can die to a genji a in 6v6 because the only thing to do is not shit it when you suspect he has deflect, he can’t kill you on his own since as bastion you should be well protected and healed. He doesn’t counter any hero if the other hero is at least decent at the game.
You forgot to talk about how much the deflect nerf gutted Genji, Deflect being smaller lead to an issue still in the game where you can deflect and still take the damage
@@kingkocoa4467 Yeah, and it fails 90% of the times, at least for me. You basically have to anticipate that you need to use it soon rather than as a reflex.
would love to see one of these for sym, really weird hero who's never been popular and has had huge reworks. a lot of interesting things to cover, like the fact she was support at one point or the shield gen that i feel like a lot of people forgot about. also would be interesting to talk about how she's always dominated low levels of play even at her worst state.
@@gilscheiner8097 Up there with MEI? lmao. he's annoying in the right hands, sure, but at least he doesn't take away your ability to literally play the game you payed for.
I play OW from time to time. Later on in my OW 'career' I decided to see if I could play genji well from barely ever playing him before. I struggled with consistency (don't we all?) but when I played well it was so satisfying. So many of the new hero releases just seemed to poop on Genji so hard, from Morira's attacks that track and go through reflect or Echo flying to Sombra's hacks etc. It just increasingly felt harder to play Genji and when you (and your enemies) can swap Hero on the fly it just seems like a massive risk to even try.
Buff for genji -turn at least 25 hp into armor or shield -revert the fire speed of secondary fire back to .65 - let genji access the wall jump reset because if hanzo gets a double jump, then genji should get a triple jump
omg i love the call back to that old supertf video where he played genji against boston in owl, this montage was so similar to the one in his video and i love it 5:06
@@inm7879 would you rather fight a genji or a tracer, doom or echo? He's the least annoying of the flankers because he's least likely to just kill you outright and doesn't remove your ability to play the game like sombra.
Awesome video! I barely play OW anymore, Genji is truly what made OW fun for me, being able to nearly OTP him only swapping on certain maps/matchups. Now, however, you're basically throwing if you pick him into remotely competent players who can play around him and make appropriate hero swaps. Hopefully OW2 will allow him to shine again.
@@SpeedKing.. and Echo literally flies, Genji is NOT equiped to deal with a flying hero that often has a pocket anyway. Not only that but she has a pretty much instakill beam ability which is yet another counter to deflect.
What's with the buff/Nerf He got in the Patch where dooms CD Reset faster when He ulted. Genjis Shuriken dmg went from 28 to 29 and blade dmg from 120 to 110. Great Video dude as a genji Main myself it was nice to see what ma boy went through xD
Honestly there is so much working against genji’s playstyle now that I think blizzard should give him some ridiculous buff like making his dragon blade do 150 damage per slash so that he can instantly assassinate people with dash+slash. Another suggestion I have heard thrown around is to add his bleed damage from beta back in but I don’t think that would change too much.
yeah but this is the hero who was the most popular for 3 years straight, 14% is miniscule and i think whats more telling of his actual power is that no one would ever flex to him, its only one tricks who ever play him
@@joeschipper6465 Yep. Genji is my second most played hero below tracer. It's always been that way, but I haven't played genji properly in so long. Every time I get the itch to play him, I'm reminded of why I don't play him as much anymore. Literally everything counters him nowadays, to the point where it's legitimately boring to try and play into heroes like bap, and sigma. I'm all for counter-playing rather than counter picking. For example, people always consider mccree a counter to tracer, but I genuinely enjoy tracer vs cree matchups. But so many heroes counter genji so hard, that it's literally not even worth the effort. Honestly most of the post launch heroes have just been so oppressive. Like god damn, when has sigma ever been bad since he launched? That hero has seen so much play time it's unreal.
got probably over 600 hours on the dude. recently I started playing more echo and hit gm with split playtime between the two but man oh man is genji a painful hero. Sure most of the new heroes counter him, but another thing is that people have just gotten better over time. I feel like back in the OG dive meta, people didn't know how to counter blade as well. I seriously don't know why they are so afraid to give him straight up buffs. His popularity is definitely very good for the game and playerbase.
The problem with genji tho is that he is too strong in the lower ranks and too weak in the higher ranks. It's really difficult to balance a character that performs so differently in ranks. Either is he too weak in high ranks or too strong because of his mobility in the lower ranks.
He's only "too strong" in low ranks bc just like any other low rank player, they simply can't deal with a lot of heroes. Moreso to characters who generally have smaller hitboxes and more mobility. Game should be balanced around high ranks, not low ranks
@@Apocalypse754 True I do agree that it should probably be more balanced around the higher ranks. But it still doesn't mean we should ignore the lower ranks. That's where most of the playerbase is.
I didn't pick up overwatch till late 2020 so getting a perspective on heroes that have been in the game since day one is really cool to see. I think the D.va vid was a tad long but this one was perfect.
Ahhh, my main.. I love Genji so much.. and I really wish he was in a better state. I think him being unviable played a huge part in me finally quitting Overwatch for good and moving to something like Apex.
Nice one, although Genji is more niche he is still fun and can be impactul in the game. Can you do one for Mei next? They literally murdered her after role lock came in with 8 damn nerfs and stripped her away of her carry potential and from being a viable and fun pick ever again.
I already liked the Dva one but actually it’s better like that. I like the idea of putting some owl clips when the characters are at their best. Cant wait to see the next hero
I wish you can make one for Pharah too. Unfortunately, Genji cannot be buffed because of Ana (Nanoblade). Just like Pharah who cannot be buffed because of Mercy (PharMercy).
This format works WAY better than the Dva one. The discussion within the narrative of OW and metas is super engaging, and the lowered emphasis on stats makes it a lot easier to parse.
Dude these videos are awesome! Its exciting to see your unique ow content karq ;) Sad to hear that the dva Video didnt perform but please dont stop making this series im lovin it!!!🙏
This was a much easier to follow style than the previous ones (too many numbers) so I think this is definitely the way to go. The timeline graphs help heaps too
Deflect cancel was one of the worst things introduced to the gameplay. When I first started playing I was a Zen main and if a Genji got in my face at least I could time his deflect (like 99% of all other abilities) to at least have a fighting chance against being bullied and forced to swap. Genjiwatch was one of the worst times for support players in OW history.
Must have all other episodes!!!!!! I like the format of the D.Va one though. It felt more in depth with showing each buff/nerf in the timeline rather than the overview of them at the end
They should've reverted him to his 2020 changes, I think that was his most balanced form. Especially with ult charge nerfs. However other things that could help Genji thrive again Minor changes: Rechargeable shield, I'd want exact same health and damage to kill, but with a shield that recharges maybe 25% of his hp. That way he can get health back when his healers are busy. It would make him weaker to sombra, but if hack didn't disable it then it'd be all good. Either reduce dash reset from 8 to 7 seconds. That one second would be massive, so many times I would live if my dash came off cool down a second sooner. Rework change idea: Wall bounce, this would be an addition to his dash, where you could dash into a wall holding jump. This will briefly stick him to the wall, where you can look in the direction you want to go and bounce off the wall. This would give him more mobility, as now he gets essentially an extra dash. For evasion or closing distance. I think this would be better than giving him his double jump off wall climb back or something. Wall bounce also wouldn't cancel out wall climb, so you could wall climb off a bounce.
wow, those are cool ideas! but blizzard wont even accept just adding a bleed effect to his melee, they dont want the new players, toxic players or people that havent played genji but think hes easy to play, which are really numerous to burn their offices, so he will keep being the worst dps
Great video honestly! Doing a "look back" on aspects and characters throughout the game's lifespan is such a great idea and have loved these types of videos. If you ever do another one of these I think Rein, Lucio, Hog, Mercy, Soldier, or Reaper would be great candidates!
Great video. If you plan on continuing this series, could Junkrat be one of the next ones? Doesn't have to be first but I've heard some stuff I never even knew about and I've considered myself a junk main since I started playing in 2018 (The EXACT day that Scatter was removed). TL;DR, I was a demoman main in TF2 so Junkrat felt like the logical choice. Back on topic, though. I've heard he could die to his own tire if he was in los of it, his mine used to only go a little further than pulsebombs does, etc. Would love to see a video on every change.
I enjoyed the dva video and really liked the stat page layout. That being said I think this video is a bit better with the showcases of players popping off with the hero/reacting to the buffs, might have been a bit hard to do with dva but it definitely added to this video.
Watching this has made me realise something: the devs are so corrupt in a way I had never considered! They do so much for DPS players and it's absurd. There are more DPS heroes than tanks and supports combined. The next hero we have to look forward to in OW2 is a DPS. When the meta evolved into GOATS, the devs weren't happy with the absence of DPS heroes so they implemented role lock, despite the state of Overwatch actually being 4 players on every team insta-locking DPS. There are tank-damage hybrids with Zarya, D.Va and - most notably - Hog, but the devs have never called them that. The devs HAVE called each of Zenyatta, Moira and Baptiste support-damage hybrids, which brings me to question where are the damage-tank or damage-support hybrids? The priority ticket things are way too generous - I consistently have 30+ tickets available so I can play support when it's busy - which means DPS players have an easy way to shorten their queues from 20mins to 17mins. (Ever notice how the tickets shorten a 10min support queue to less than 2mins, but a 20min DPS queue to 19mins? This is why!) The focus heroes for OW2 were Sombra and Bastion, so much so that support players doubt there will be any changes made to their heroes and tank players are worried about the "brawler" aspect being applied to ours. Speaking of, the team composition for OW2 is one tank with two damage and support heroes, using the rarity of tank players to hasten queue times for DPS players while converting the current tanks into DPS heroes with bigger hitboxes and current damage characters into tanks with no real change (e.g. Doomfist and Mei) Why o why can no one on the dev team just open up a content creators stream, listen for 5mins until one of them suggests a fun change for tanks and supports, and then make the DPS players that are solely interested in getting gold damage in a losing lobby actually consider helping the team rather than feeding on cooldown? Being a game dev is a hard job, but this is so easy I have no hesitation that I could do it. My grandparents could do it
Genji has always been both my most skilled and favorite hero since I started playing at roughly mid 2017. I fell in love with his aggressive/fast playstyle and skillset at first sight and became a one-trick ever since, seeing his place now really breaks my heart. There used to be so many Genji highlights that were captured from either streams or league games, but there are little to none nowadays. He’s such a unique hero both with amazing lore and design, but Blizzard just decides to leave him in the dust I guess. OW2 beta test is soon going to be released and I really hope they made the game just a tiny bit more “Genji-friendly” I know I shouldn’t have hope anymore due to the past year of literally no content but idk a guy’s gotta have a dream yknow. Sorry for the poor English. -Random Genji Lover
I absolutely love this series! Maybe do the oldest heroes as they've had the most game time. Which I presume that means most changes, but I could actually be wrong! 🧐🤓
