What Happened to George Lucas?

George Lucas is arguably the most influential filmmaker of our era. While some would point at Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg and have a point, Star Wars changed the movie business in a way no other film did before or since. Spielberg and Scorsese have more impressive filmographies, but Star Wars is still the blockbuster all others are measured against.
In this episode of What Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Brad Hamerly), narrated, edited and produced by Taylor James Johnson, we dig into Lucas’ rich but sometimes divisive legacy. We tackle his early days, with him having a notable flop in THX-1138 that perhaps pivoted him away from the esoteric, and his eventual arrival onto the Hollywood A-list with his classic American Graffiti. From there, we explain how Star Wars got made, why he opted not to direct the sequels, and how, in the nineties, he decided to not only direct his long-hyped prequel trilogy but also change the original trilogy to mesh with his new perspective. We also dig into how his company, ILM, changed what people thought was possible in terms of movie magic and perhaps had an even bigger impact on the modern blockbuster than even his signature trilogy.
Since the end of the prequel trilogy, Lucas also mentioned returning to the lower-budget, experimental roots of THX-1138, but nothing has surfaced from Lucas in many years, with him selling Lucasfilm to Disney. The last movies he seemed to really be involved in here his passion project Red Tails, and the much-maligned Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, with him stepping aside for the upcoming Dial of Destiny. What happened? We’ll dig into it in this new episode!

George Lucas is my favorite filmmaker for one reason. He wanted to make the movies HE wanted to make. Not what others wanted. He was able to see his vision come to life with little compromise. Wether or not it was the right decision he made it was his and that’s really admirable.

I’d much rather not admire him for that and gotten a fantastic prequel trilogy. “He wanted to make the films HE wanted to make” why should I admire a man who wanted to make shitty movies. That’s only admirable if they were great. It’s like a waiter bringing me a plate of dog shit. Should I admire him for serving me what he wanted to serve me?

@Evan Belisle In that same vein, for, all of his glory, Jerry Bruckheimer, also, launched, the career of Michael Bay, and, audiences needed nearly three decades to realize that he, was, basically, Paul W.S. Anderson, with, better luck, professionally, and, maritally, tragic.

There was no "vision" for Star Wars. The story and characters were constantly changing. Practically nothing in the original script survived until the final film. Lucas' only "vision" was that he wanted to make a Flash Gordon type movie, that's it.

@@captlazer5509 , not sure i know Warner Bros owns THX 1138, and Universal American Graffiti. Universal also owns Howard the Duck the film but not the rights to the character which reside with Disney. I think Disney got the rights back from Paramount for Indiana Jones for the 5th movie. I wonder if they keep the rights to the first 4. Fox owned Star Wars 77, but Disney bought Fox. The Student films are property of the University of Southern California. Whether people like it or not, he is a visionary. The same people most likely take the technology used to produce movies nowadays for granted. Not realizing modern movies (mostly blockbusters) wouldn't exist as they do, for better or worse, because of Lucas. A lot of them probably are MCU fans and even though Phase 4 dropped the ball and Phase 5 didn't start that well, none of it would probably exist without him. It's because of him and ILM that Iron Man looked that good. Because they had their trial and errors prior to it with the Prequels and other movies. Anyways, I'll end it here before I go into too much ranting. Cheers from France! 🍻

Without a doubt. And the legacy of Lucasfilm continues in that spirit. But that isn’t the issue. Who really denies what you said? I think the tragedy of George Lucas is that while he was doing a lot for the art of cinema, he was systematically and pointlessly revising, reworking, replacing and displacing _Star Wars,_ his one unequivocal success. And he ruined it. He _actually_ ruined it. George Lucas took _Star Wars_ back from all of us and has been slowly transforming it into something else ever since. Why? Because he can? “Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to.” And that’s what Lucas did: he has erased the past. Because, I guess, he had to.

@bdr113080 Год назад
I don’t really think he sold it to them and they had a handshake agreement that he would do what he wanted them to do. I mean yeah he can make suggestions but he flat out said he never wanted to make any more Star Wars movies. We’re Disney drop. The ball was thinking it was a good idea to shuffle movie directors, and tell them just to make up a script as they went. I think the force awakens was awesome, but because nobody really knew where these characters came from or where they were going when they made the second movie Rian Johnson didn’t have any direction on where to take anyone, so he just killed off the main good guy in the main bad guy and I don’t care if George Lucas and Steven Spielberg teamed up to do the rise of Skywalker they were screwed from the beginning because they were starting over from scratch. As far is why George Lucas sold Star Wars you don’t have to look any further than the most toxic Fanbase in the world. I love Star Wars, but I don’t love every movie so the only time I watch attack of the clones is when we are doing a Star Wars marathon other than that I never watch that movie. It’s so bad it’s cringe at places. But I’ve never accused George Lucas of inappropriately doing something to my childhood or harassed actors online. Nope I just don’t watch the movie. Problem solved. When you look at everything, George Lucas went through, both actors that played Anakin in the prequels went through, the actor that played jar jar and everything he went through. I don’t blame him. The man created one of the most beloved franchises in the world, and for the next 20 years, the fans would not leave him alone about how bad they thought the prequels were so then he sells it and then everyone sitting around with their mouth open going “ well why did George sandwich this is it right?” It’s kind of like how the Zack Snyder fans never supported Zack Snyder when he was working for Warner Bros. but then the minute they showed him the door because the fans didn’t like his movies they decided he was the god of directors and only he could make the right DC movies they wanted. Bottom line the fans in the world of geek culture. Have a favorite past time of complaining and getting online and harassing people, and some people would rather just walk away then deal with the basement dwellers.

I also liked his remastered versions, and I have no issue with JarJar Binks. A lot of people forgett it was made for Kids, not only us. My daughter 9 years old liked JarJar. The casting was poor, however we got what we wanted, the Rise of Darth Vader. I can also understand that he sold everything, it was his baby and he can do with it what he wanted. That Disney is messing it up and went down the Woke Lane could no one expect. Infact the first Movie (Rouge One), is my favorite from all the Disney Star Wars. I like it because everyone is dead at the end, which is fully in line with the very first movie (many people gave theire lives to get these plans to us).

29:28 OK, I gotta stop you right there, because there is a bit of a misconception regarding this: No, it's not true that people have changed their minds for the positive regarding the prequels. The number of people who has done that is miniscule. The vast, VAST majority of the people who hated the prequels back in the 2000s still hate them today. What has hapened is that most of the people who watched them as kids and loved then grew up and now they voice their opinion. This is a well known fact among the Star Wars fan community, but I guess it's not as clear for people in the periphery of it, let alone outside of it (not that I blame those people for not engaging. The "Star Wars" fandom has always had a scary toxic element).

I believe fans of the original trilogy misunderstood the intent of the prequels, thinking it was for them. It was not. He recognised that there was a whole new generation of young film viewers who wouldn't watch the original trilogy because it had become dated. For many fans of star wars, like myself, the prequels were a part of my childhood and an introduction which ushered in a massive wave of new fans. I understand that dialogue wise the films were weak, but for a 11 year old kid watching Yoda flip like 50 times was cool as fuck. I was around 14 when I watched Revenge of the Sith and I absolutely loved it, the films became more serious as I grew up much like the Harry Potter series and allowed me to appreciate themes like tragedy, betrayal and in some respects even mental health.

@officialmonarchmusic
@officialmonarchmusic Год назад
@@Klynch111 Nope. Several people and stories, along with the popular (and false) video "How Star Wars was saved in the edit" suggested it, but the truth is more complicated. The short version is, Lucas saved his own film ALONG with her and several other people. It was not just her. But I prefer the long version. John Jympsan was the first editor on Star Wars. He was not good for the job so he was fired. The supposed "disastrous" cut was from him. Lucas hired Richard Chew, Marcia Lucas, and Paul Hirsch along with himself (he went uncredited) to create a cut that aligned with his vision. Together, they eventually made a cut good enough to show other people. (By this point Marcia and Richard had left the project) This is the cut that was shown to Lucas's director buddies, named by the OP, and ironically enough, this "terrible" cut (which I believe to be negatively received solely due to the unfinished effects and sound) is proof of why the other editors saved the film, while this was literally edited BY THEM. In short, Lucas saved his own movie, and the OP has no idea what he is talking about
