Eli Roth burst onto the horror scene with the now cult classic Cabin Fever in 2002 and followed it up with another gorefest that would not only spawn two sequels but would become renowned for some pretty shocking imagery. However, was the hype for the movie justified, or did Roth create another sick and twisted splatterfest without any substance? Well, don’t book that ticket to Slovakia just yet, as we find out WTF happened to Hostel.

hostel is one of my favorite horror movies. the last 30 minutes of the movie are intense. sucks that they killed paxton off right away in the second movie.

This movie always creeped me out more because I was stationed in germany before this came out and it was "stories" of guys getting on trains and going east...it was news articles and missing person reports Edit....so yeah this was like a thing....probably

Even though the movie itself was quite good, the residents of the Czech town where it was filmed were not so enamoured with it. A tour guide I spoke with said the entire town despises the series, especially the second one which cemented the town's desire to never allow filming horror movies there again.

I had to have my friend talk me into watching this film. I'm glad she did. We both sat down on a saturday night and watched it together. I was glued to the tv and that achilles tendon scene still haunts me. I thought the movie was great. Something new and not done in horror at the time. I loved Saw way more since it came out prior, but Hostel holds a special place in my heart. I can absolutely see rich people paying to do this to others. There are absolutely way better movies than hostel, but this was a gem at the time it was released. The gore was great. The torture was insane. I loved the setting. I can see why some of those country folks got pissed at the movie, but the americans were dumb as hell and behaved just as I pictured them.

I have a bad feeling like some things like this might exist. There are some evil people out there. I would be mighty surprised if there wasn't some outlandish dark evil shit going on somewhere in the world. I liked all three of the movies. But damn they are sick at times 😂

Loved the first Hostel, it's still in my top 5 horror movies of all time. It had a great story/premise from beginning to end with good twists throughout, good acting, hot naked girls (gotta add that in) and of course a lot of well done realistic gore. Part 2 and 3 unfortunately weren't too good and were very forgettable. But The original will always be one of the best horrors out there for me.

Hostil reminds me of that movie called Turistas. The beginning was all fun and games until it wasn't. The sheer horror. But still a good watch, if you're into gory.

This is one of my favorite horror franchises. People often write this off as “torture porn,” but I don’t think it should be. To me, what drew me into this series was the unknown, foreign country aspect, especially a country that doesn’t get a lot of exposure (not that it was accurate but that’s another discussion). The European atmosphere and it really being a story about a scam is what made it fascinating to me. Unfortunate that many will not give this series a chance due to it being labeled as “torture porn,” or a Saw copycat but it is very much its own identity.

70s were not about Slashers. Halloween didn't come out until 1978. Before that you had a lot of demonic-related movies like Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, and Omen.

This movie reminded me of Halloween (1978). In Halloween, it's three teenage girls doing teenage girl stuff. Their dialogue and situations feel like everyday occurrences. In Hostel, you get three guys who are just being guys on vacation. And then horror ensues. What makes the horror have an impact is how normal these characters seem. Put them in these nightmare situations and we feel horrified for them. Hostel may have elements of torture porn, but its strength lies in its realism. The scene where Paxton looks Josh right in the eyes is very disturbing.

Alot of times the best part of making a film is after it's thrown out there people make assumptions, deeper meanings, etc. for the film that was not originally intended. I am a Hostel fan but I can see why people don't like it. I think it came out at a perfect time for it's success and will live in Horror movie history all time. Roth had a general idea of rich people paying lots of money to do awful things. Of course people and countries would be upset for 'portraying' their country and culture in a bad light...its a movie, who cares, get over it, stop crying. And yes this stuff really goes on. Horrible things go on every day everywhere.

It doesn't matter if Eli Roth is behind BORDERLANDS AVI ARAD ruined everything again, the same way he ruined TASM2, MORBIUS and UNCHARTED Things went so bad that Craig Mazin (from CHERNOBYL and THE LAST OF US) asked for his name to be removed from the credits

Did he ruin Blade 1 and 2? Spider-Man 1 and 2? The MCU Spider-Man films? The Spiderverse films? X-Men 1 and 2? I haven't even gone into the animated projects he has produced. I definitely agree with you that he has messed up some things that should have been layups but he definitely has a lot of hits that you are ignoring to make your point sound better. But definitely keep him away from third installments because with the exception of SMNWH he has absolutely delivered some duds🤔

@comicfiend1988 Just keep in mind 2 things: * He doesn't ruin a movie when he's in the executive producer capacity, where he has less power * The good movies were good because of someone else that produced it. So look in the credits and see if he's credited as executive producer, and if he's the main producer, then look at the other names If you see names like Laura Ziskin, Kevin Feige, or Phil Lord and Chris Miller, then it means the movies worked because of them, not Arad

And he is in fact listed as Producer PGA on films like Spider-Man 2 and the Spiderverse films and there was quite a few others (according to IMDb) All I will say and I will move on is that I don't necessarily think it's fair to say it will suck just because of him because he has actually worked on quality projects in the past. But I'm hoping it's a good movie and we both end up liking it 🤙🏿

This sort of thing would never have happened in any of the Soviet era countries of the USSR or the Eastern Bloc. It may take place in the neoliberal, robber-baron hell-scapes that came afterwards though.

That montage of torture porn movies at the beginning didn't all seem to fit. Hard candy for instance has 0 blood & gore, and is more of a psychological thriller than even a horror movie.

I found this movie quite shocking at the time and thought it was silly when I watched it again recently. The original Martyrs is far better in almost every regard. It's absolutely harrowing, but engaging too. You'll remember it for a lot longer after viewing.

What this is one of Eli Ross one of my favorite series of movies next to cabin fever Paxton didn’t get all of the I’m sorry to say I don’t know if they’re like a New World order or type rich people he didn’t get all the villains but the chicken and the second one did so at least those young people that did survive or tried and die truck. At least the people that responsible got stopped but now I love the channel and love the series Just watched the Bruce Willis 2018 Deathwish remake that Eli Roth did yesterday for my birthday with some homey’s. We all like the flicks so yeah happy happy Wednesday everyone!🤘🤘

Hostel is a much smarter film than people give it credit for. It's first act lulls that American viewer into a fun road trip movie energy, then pulls the rug out from under them. The pacing and cinematography in the 2nd and 3rd acts are more Hitchock than Exploitation. The film is about ignorant Americans who live a life of excess at the expense of third world labor having to confront the direct horrors of their consumption. I have always felt this film is much better and less "shocking" than it 's reputation.

Great looking first film in the classic sense, then by the sequel unfortunately the industry had changed completely as far as post production goes thus committing the cardinal sin and immature mistake of having it visually look like every other dumb (horror) movie out there now i.e. a Saw clone with indistinguishable uniformed aesthetics, losing all stylistic links to the original. The sequel's okay plot-wise but the cinematic feel of connection is lost.

it's one thing to make a shocking movie to make a point, in my experience, Roth doesn't fully grasp the material he chooses to explore and ends up making very shallow movies that only exist to shock people for the sake of shock which i find very lazy. hostel is guilty of this as well as green inferno and knock knock. i can't stand him

Honestly, while the gore scenes made me cringe , the overall "story" bored me to tears... Until you get to Act 3, and the main character makes a mad dash to get out of the country, while evading this torture-mafia. The chase becomes mesmerizing to watch, especially when you know what kind of things will be done to him if they catch him. Third act is worth the watch, even if the rest isn't.
