In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a classic. Thanks for giving more info about this band.

In the spring of 1968, I saw the Iron Butterfly 2 times at a 14+ teen club called "The Blue Law" in Carson CA. It was in a warehouse near the 110 Fwy and Torrance Blvd. Doug Ingle, Ron Bushy, Lee Doorman and Eric Braun were members at that point. They played songs from the first "Heavy" Album. They were really spectacular, with swirling light show and pyrotechnics. The venue was somewhat small with a small "stage". My buddy and I were 16 and 17, we sat on the floor about 20-25 feet near the band on stage. The warehouse was painted all black inside. Young folks sat on the floor everywhere. They could and paint with florescent paint anywhere they wanted. One time Steppenwolf sat right next to us on the floor watching the Butterfly, then played on stage.

Nice research on the photos/vids and presentation of a band that will always be a part of MUSIC history.

Ball was a great album which I wish listened to constantly when it first came out. OK it sounds a little dated now but for the time it was just so innovative.

Agreed. The biggest misconception about I B was that it was a metal band, Doug Ingle made it crystal clear back then that that was not what they were about. As you allude to they more proto-progressive oriented. Would have been something to see what might have been if Atco hadn't worked them to death and instead gave them the time they needed to fully flesh out their ideas. Cheers!

The song is legendary, but I'm extremely skeptical of the 30 million sales figure. Yes, Wikipedia's article mentions 30 million, but 30 million would place it near the all-time top 10. It's not on lists of the top-selling albums I could find, and those lists were up to 50 albums long.

No way it sold 30m. They were not popular outside the U.S. Worldwide sales are about 6 million tops.

They are still touring today with no original members as Ron Bushy passed away a few years ago but gave them his blessing to continue I believe. In 2000 I saw them at VetRock in Willow Groove, PA with Bushy and Lee Dorman and two replacements for the others. I enjoyed it immensely.

I wonder, was the band named after the popular options strategy? Or was the options strategy named after the popular band. Since the band was formed before the CBOE, I am going to go with the latter.
