I had to share them as I have been looking a long time for these articles written in the '60's about Jan & Dean.

PS When the movie was canceled, Jan and Dean actually had a television show pilot created just for them in February of 1966...when Jan was hurt in the car accident in April however, the tv show, of course, could not happen. There are clips from the tv show here on RU-vid:

When I was maybe 10 years old, I saw Deadman's Curve and the Buddy Holly Story in the same summer. I truly shaped an aspect of who I've become, 40+ years later

I first got hooked on jan and dean in the late 60's when a guy my sister was dating gave her a jan and dean record since then they have been my altime favorite group along with the beach boys may the departed one rest in peace they were the greatest

My brother was slow, I hate that word ''retarded'' -and when I see how Dean was so close to Jan and tried to help him recover, it reminds me so much of how I tried to help my brother survive in this world, and how much I loved him. He died; not to long ago. I will miss him forever.

Retarded only means stupid. Some people call others retarded, yet they do not even know the meaning of the word. I mean, for all I know your brother could have been pretty damn brilliant in some subjects, Paris Rain. I know all of this from my own personal experience.

History Man retarded imo means=slow in growth etc whereas "stupid" is a lack of intelligence or common sense, and so on. My brother had a brain disease, was minimally functional yet had many lucid moments once struck. Healthy, he made the Deans list, almost graduated w/ his MA, but then......

@amp3cx10000a7jp Hi...What is being performed is a cover of the song "Turn, Turn, Turn" by Jan & Dean themselves. They recorded this and put it on their "Folk 'n Roll" LP (album) from 1965. It is my absolute favorite version of this wonderful song. Thank you! Mary

Jan and Dean were Cool guys and we kids looked up to them and the Beach Boys back in the early to mid '60s. ;-)

@SixTailights Whoooh there, Six....hold your horses! ...grab you by your tail lights!....."Folk 'n Roll" is a GREAT album! However, i do agree about "I Found a Girl" and "Turn, Turn, Turn"..... You have a problem with Jan & Dean's SUPER fabulous version of "Hang On Sloopy"? Dean's delivery of "Yesterday" and Jan's "Eve of Destruction"? They are second to NONE. (watch! it!!)

Christ. I heard this song 40 years ago at a party and thought it was the group Cyrkle not till today did I know it was Jan and Dean.I guess this old Dog can learn something new.

@tempetiger ....you're welcome!! They had been filming the last scene (though on the FIRST day ) Dean: "Jan and I climbed onto the train to watch, but after a while I got bored, and got off. I walked up the hill to where the catering trucks were parked." Somehow the brakes went out on one of the locomotives, and the trains smashed together. Jan: "I saw the engine coming on fast - closer & closer. The engineer was signaling frantically....I knew it was going to hit, so i jumped!"

I remember seeing a movie on TV years ago about Jan's accident. I didn't know about the leg injury at the movie studio. How did that happen? Thanks for posting this great information. I've always been a big fan of the classic surfing groups of the '60s.

Today 4/12/17 is the 51st anniversary of that car accident. Car accidents in the '50s and '60s claimed a lot of good people. Cars are much safer now.

Does anyone know what the title of the film was going to be? 12 people injured?We know of Jan's injury to his leg but what happened to all the others? What happened on the set to cause so many injuries? What became of the film or did shooting of it end after the 1st day when all the injuries of 12 people happened?

Folkmusicgirl; Dean just put out a book that answers all those questions; the book is of course titled Surf City; the name of the movie was Easy Come Easy Go; (a slapstick comedy with Mel Brooks & others) It was a train they were filming crashed into the flatbed on the tracks on which was the camera crew, the idiot director and other film crew members; Jan was on it got compound fracture of his leg; Dean had just gotten off of it to walk to an A&W and get a rootbeer float! That was it for the movie

@Maryw7 I'm more of a surfer-guy than a mid-sixties guy. So in my opinion, this is the album that kinda started the decline in their career. Besides, they seemed to give into what the rest of the world was doing rather than keeping their own unique sound. On 'Folk and Roll,' I think they tried too much to sound like other artists of the time.

@tempetiger Dean: "You should have seen the smoke and dust and bodies....bodies just went sailing through the air everywhere. I thought they were dead. And (pointing to Jan), HE was the one I couldn't find." A trainman helped Jan over to the road where some cars had pulled up. He was able to get a ride from a young motorist who rushed him to Northridge Hospital. Jan: "I saw Dean running toward the train hunting for me, so I yelled "Look, i broke my leg. I'm going to the hospital."

I saw a comment that said Jan and Dean were so awesome that the two of them singing together sounds as full as 5 Beach boys singing. Are you kidding me? it sounds so full because they have an array of backup singers singing Harmony. I'm not one to throw water on anybody's fire, but if you think that Jan and Dean's singing was equivalent to the singing of the Beach Boys LOL If you feel they should be in the HOF for historical reasons, then fine, but please don't tell me they deserve it for their musical ability lol They're singing ability is nowhere near Brian Wilson and the beach boys, or the Beatles, or The Mamas and the Papas, or many other of the great Harmony groups. I understand many of you were big fans, but don't over estimate their talent level to a height greater than it actually was.
