What Happened to Mill Street Bistro? (And an Interview with someone who met Joe Nagy after the show)

In this video I look into what happened to the Mill Street Bistro and it's owner after they were featured on two episodes of Kitchen Nightmares. In the episode the owner came across as extremely contentious and stubborn. There was an insane amount of yelling and screaming in the episodes, and even after the yelling stopped, Joe still seamed a bit hesitant to admit he was wrong. Given all that I was really curious what happened to this restaurant and if they were able to survive after the show. I also have a interview with someone who met Joe in real life in 2018 and get some insight into what he's been up to since the episode.

I feel like Gordon critiqued this guy a whole lot more than other restaurants. Some of these people really think they own the best of the best restaurants in the world but in reality there are a lot more "high class" in the world. They're honestly not top tier restaurants in the world in the slightest. And Gordon critiques them as if they were one of those restaurants in a attempt to bring them down to earth. That's crazy
@floraflowers

He definitely molded his character and his speech to the different types of people he met. You could see that he wasn't rude or aggressive with owners who clearly had no clue but weren't arrogant, and those who displayed remorse and felt guilt for ruining their business into the ground. Take Rishi from Prohibition Grill and Akira from Sushi Ko for example. Rishi was as clueless as they come but she didn't mistreat her staff so the only thing Gordon reprimander her for was getting on a whim into a business she knew nothing about and not firing her chef who was clearly taking advantage of her, and he didn't reprimand Akira because he was obviously desperate, remorseful and showed signs of depression. But then you have Sebastian and also Alan and Gen from Burger Kitchen. They were both so far up their asses and so arrogant and abusive to their staff and/or family, that they deserved Gordon's critique of both their business way and shitty character. Same with the owners of Zeke's. Gordon isn't a tyrant, he just doesn't tolerate bullshit but also gives credit where it is due.

The restaurant down the street that Gordon Ramsay went to is actually pretty good I forget the name of it but I've been there before. Also during this episode he's talking about Ohioans and walleye than saying basically we won't eat it any other way then he's cooking it. You guys won't understand this since you are not exactly from here but for Northwest Ohio walleye is a huge deal. Hell we have entire walleye festivals in multiple cities at multiple times of the year. We quite literally celebrate the walleye run walleye is a massive deal and can make or break a restaurant in this area. For him to say something like that within this area is quite literally the dumbest possible thing you could say.

The scene where Gordon asks the staff if they had a problem serving a 10 dollar burger, is incredible. Joe gets caught in a lie, after saying his staff has a problem serving burgers. After the staff looks confused & reassures they never claimed to be against serving burgers, Gordon turns to Joe, saying “whenever I smell bullshit, I’ll turn to you.” Joe, looking absolutely upset, asks “can I interject something?” Gordon simply replies “I’m busy.” So fucking good.

The reason I know this is because he mentioned "fresh frozen" which comes from another Kitchen Nightmares episode where Gordon asks a waiter if they can ask the owner whether the food was fresh or frozen, the owner said it was fresh then they freeze it, "fresh frozen, fresh frozen out of the can" is what he said. About the farm: there is no way the farm we see is enough to supply his kitchen. One cow can produce 20 or so filet cuts after being raised for years, the small farm we see on the show is no where near the size you would need to supply. The farm is not that big, but even worth it is too big for the restaurant. If he slaughtered any of the animals he would have too much meat for 1 months, with the low number of customers he has. So it is more viable not to slaughter any animals, which then results in him buying meat. The system only works if you can actually use the meat you produce or sell it off.

The arrogance, addressing Ramsay as “G.R.”, the back chat and shouting matches, when he gets found out yelling at his employees in front of customers and completely back steps his tirade, the complaining to customers after Ramsay kicks him out of his own kitchen, it’s an episode filled with timeless quotes and he clashes with Ramsay every sentence. Sadly true - but wrong as hell. It depends on the local Farms and Restaurants Buisness Model. Around my Place in Germany, Farms had changed from the taditional Farming towards independent ecological Farming and also Energy Production (no joke, They produce Energy and Gas for the whole Region). Also, they changed back to the "medival" method of selling on Markets and on their Farms directly - and the Stuff they do not get sold they sell to the Discounters around. Same goes for Meat - they kill a Cow and then sell it to different Buyers freshly. The Butcher has his own Shop and works with several Farms - you can even order your own Cow at his place and choose how it is raised (Yes, you can order a Wagyu-Style Calf, it just takes some Time, but you get it for around 5k Euros, Bull will cost more). Many Farms work on Demand and plant what customers order aside their normal routine. This all led to a constantly supply of local, fresh and "Bio"-Grade food (Pesticide Free etc.) and nearly no demand for canned or frozen Food. The Farmers finally make Money again and Big Corp is benefitting from it as well as even the Discounters suddenly have astonishingly good Veggie and Meat for a Price the Big Corps can't compete with. And, if I can manage to live by 150€ a Month without the Farmers around going bankrupt, eating daily fresh Salad, Vegetables and Meats in a Country whoose Farmers struggle to survive everywhere else even with govermental Funding, I think this should be possible in other Places as well - especially in the US and GB where this Model is more common than in Germany. Of course, I have to go to the Market and shop the Discounters around the evening Time every second or third Day, but hey - as a Buisness, there are othe roptions as well as "freezing Meat" is out of the option for a Restaurant - not only because it ruins the flavour/texture when done not properly, rather than , if done properly, it takes too much effort and Time and thus is impractical compared to regulary buying less Meat instead of buying all at once and just storing it Low-Temp. The second Thing is the Buisness Model of the Restaurants - many of them bundle their Orders even when not associated otherwise. They order from one Farm this Cow, then pay the Butcher and the Guy who delivers it to them. This goes from "daily fresh" to "one to three Times a Week", depending on the Size of the Restaurant. Of course, we have "Restaurants" as well that choose the "frozen Goods"-Policy (called "Imbissbude" aka "Snack-Truck"), but they are not expensive, they go for "1st serve Fast, 2nd seve Cheap 3rd serve Quality"; opposite to Restaurants going Quality first. Also, you have to take a look at what you serve - you can try and have "Steak" on the Menue as well as "Fish", but if you do not sell what goes along this, it will be expensive and impractical. You gotta take a look on how to use the leftovers from the cooking to your advantage - every big Star Restaurant does (even more as the ingredients are usually way more expensive). You Menue has to fit when buying it as well as it has to fit to the Customers demands - it's idiotic to try to sell something that is neither wanted by the customer nor the recources are provided around and you gotta import them expensively. Every frigging Housewife knows how to do this this - you put on the Table what you can afford and what can get. Doing otherwise will end up in A) yourself having no Money before end of Month or b) again, running out of money before end of Month. All you gotta do now - and that is the struggle and the Art - is to make thoose End meet with the demands of the "Customers", your Family. And we all know how loveley, frugal and uncritical Families are, right?

This business needed to be closed. I am from the area and have had encounters with this former owner Nagy. The food was not worth the $ at all.... how can a steak be both dripping blood and tough at the same time? I sent it back and was met by Mr. Nagy with complete attitude, belittling me that "you don't know what a steak is". Then, to my amazement heard a "F******" hillbillies" as he walked away. He yelled at my waitress so loud that we could hear him clear across the restaurant. She looked as if she had been crying when she returned to our table. This is a sad little man who apparently feeds from complements and is always right. I think they call that the little man syndrome? After watching the Mill Street Bistro episode of Kitchen Nightmares, I was completely disgusted at the similar condescending manner Nagy spoke to Chef Ramsay. How dare him! No wonder every one of this man's "businesses" have failed. You can keep changing the name and location, but its just gonna be the same old s***. Very sad!!

“GARNISH MICRO GARNISH CARROT WAS ON AS A GARNISH” OK, he’s either having a mental breakdown before our eyes or chanting the magic words to summon a demon. Anyway, that whole sentence made me bust a gut laughing.

Yeah I'll add to what people have already said, the guy you were interviewing must have serious issues judging people's characters, to the point of my being genuinely concerned for them, or is used to/forced to dealing within people like that frequently in their own life because literally everything he was describing checks all the boxes for narcissistic asshole who wants to be *perceived* as a 'good guy' but really it's a wafer thin veneer, his behaviour when drunk is particularly telling, someone who was well adjusted but had a bad time or disagreed with the show/Ramsey would easily be able to separate their feelings about Ramsey from their experience on the show, clearly that's not the case here!

I know it's wrong to think of "guilty by association" and i don't know this mystery person's relationship with Joe, but REALLY it tells a lot about you with the company you keep

@L Lawliet i can understand that but, personally im gonna say what's up about someone regardless of the chance of making an enemy.

@deltarious dude the redditor's statement is going out to hundreds of thousands of people on youtube. This isn't just some cool anecdote you're telling a few people at a party one time. I think that's why the redditor was being so diplomatic and neutral. He's prolly concerned about potential defamation or other shit, if his statement were to go viral. It's also likely that he didn't wanna over-judge Joe given that they literally had only two conversations. Granted Joe still comes across as a tool. Also the redditor gives you all the facts to conclude using your own judgement how douchey you feel Joe is.

In my opinion this episode is better than Amy's Baking Company. This is a Nino tier episode.

Dude is determined to make Elk dishes a thing. Lol "you notice how I didn't do that, I didn't do what Gordon said, and I proved him wrong by going out of business!"

Everyone calms down as they age, I think. Being mad at something is very energy-consuming. Even Gordon isn't yelling at everyone left and right these days anymore.

Agreed. It feels strange to compare original Hell’s Kitchen/Kitchen Nightmares Gordon to modern Gordon. Didn’t shock me hearing that Joe had calmed down a tad as he’d gotten a bit older.

I knew a lot of guys like Joe growing up in a resort corridor in the SE US. I don't honestly know how they didn't wind up on the streets, as often as they ran their snobby little businesses into the ground, acting like they were doing the locals a favor by condescending to them. They spring up like poisonous mushrooms wherever it's cheap to run a business into the ground.
