Did you know that the Poirot series producers knocked out the detective’s sidekick Captain Hastings and his secretary Miss Lemon from the show in the last seasons? And this is not what Agatha Christie planned for these characters! In this video, we shall look at what happened to Poirot’s beloved supporting characters both in tv series and in real life…err, in books!
What’s Inside:
0:00 Why producers kicked out Hastings and Lemon from the show
1:05 All about Captain Hastings
3:57 Hastings (Fraser) is younger than Poirot (Suchet)?
5:46 All about Miss Lemon
8:27 Secretary-Astrologer
9:28 All about Chief Inspector Japp
12:42 Not dropped, but expanded?

I love David Suchet's Poirot. To me, he is even better than the Poirot from the books! He gave Poirot a humanity and moved him from a caracture to a real person. The same goes for Hugh Fraser as Hastings. I think he gave Hastings life and also Hugh Fraser looked amazing in all of thos 1930's men's fashions! 🙂

Hastings' beautiful coats, jackets and trousers, accentuated by his wonderful long relaxed stride and bearing of the shoulders, certainly inherent to him and not the character - must be a really nice man. Japp, Poirot, miss Lemon: gentle entertainment, but not only that, real art in every aspect, and as close as it's possible to "suspend disbelief", experience emotion and care for an imaginary "person". The height of this is Poirot's terrible battle with his conscience in the final episode, but also in the "Orient Express" one, heart wrenching. I am amazed that anyone can dismiss it all.

These 3 sidekicks were wonderful and added to the series. I loved how the relationship between Poirot and Capt. Hastings was expanded beyond how Christie wrote him (Hastings), and Insp. Japp and Miss Lemon also were loveable characters in the series. When these 3 were no longer included in the later seasons of Poirot, I felt that the episodes took a much darker turn, and the humour that characterised the earlier seasons was gone and not in a necessarily positive way. I enjoy watching this entire series and especially enjoy the earlier episodes when all 3 sidekicks played important parts in helping Hercules Poirot to solve many baffling cases.

These are the best actors of an Agatha Christie adaptation I have ever seen. It would be easy to have Hastings to be portrayed as a fool , but Hugh made him naïve but not stupid. Most cops shows go out of their way to make the cops seem stupid but Philip played Japp perfectly. He is a copper trying to get right and when Poirot helps Japp doesn't have a tantrum. And for Poirot's assistant Miss Lemon, she is the best " Girl Friday" She is just like Poirot obsessed with the facts.

I loved the early seasons with Captain Hastings, Miss Lemon and Inspector Japp. There was so much humour (usually at the expense of either Hastings or Japp) which was sadly missing in the later stories with their darker tone. I still watch the later episodes but they are nowhere near as enjoyable. For me the quartet really hit their stride in season two, having settled nicely into their characters and pretty much every episode in that season had superb examples of witty dialogue. Two of my favourite examples: Poirot: 'Don't fraternise with that creature. I'm still training him.' Hastings: 'But it's only a parrot.' Poirot: 'I was talking to the parrot.' Delivery Man: 'Morning, Sir, I've got a parrot for Mr "Poy-rot".' Poirot: 'No no no! Poirot. It is pronounced "Pwa-roe".' Delivery Man: 'I beg your pardon, Governor. I've got a "pwa-roe" for Mr "Poy-rot".'

Aside from David Suchet's incredible portrayal of Poirot, the characters of Miss Lemon, Capt Hastings and Inspector Japp absolutely made the show. While I have great respect for Zoe Wanamaker as an actress the 3 or so episodes where the producers used her to replace those three pivotal characters was just a total let down. I've watched those episodes once. There won't be a rewatch.

I miss them so much. Even if Hastings is (and will always be my favourite), we can’t forgot that Poirot is Belgian and Miss Lemon, Hastings and Japp en English. It’s like they have guide him someway into the English customs (Poirot won’t like English food except for fish and chips anyways lol), they were like a family for him. The chapters were all of them take pare are marvelous (I love Peril and the End House and The disappearance of Mr Davenhein). Last week I was thinking what happened with Japp and Miss Lemon at the end of the series, because in Curtain we only know about Hastings and George (a little bit about this one) but neither Hastings nor Poirot say anything about Japp and Miss Lemon. As I'm reading in order, I've been back and forth through the TV series, so I've only just started to begin the episodes that consecutively lack Poirot's beloved sidekicks. Ugh, the television series honestly suffered without them (Miss Lemon brought SO much life & laughs, imo). Thanks you for this. Also remember Hastings role was not just as a Dr Watson for Poirot, he was also a continuous jab at the adventure and detective fiction of the times. To really appreciate Hastings you need to read Bull Dog Drummund, Campion, The Saint etc and you will see that Christie is making fun of the attitudes of other contemporary writers, detective movies, and their boisterous flambouyant detectives.

I'm a cook, and I find that whenever I'm called upon to fetch lemons for a recipe, I invariably refer to them as Mees Laymone. Naturally, none of the young people I work with get the joke. When the later, movie length Poirot episodes came out, I felt they suffered by the absence of humor and insouciance the three support characters brought to the stories. I feel certain that that's why they brought in Ariadne Oliver.

The early episodes with the entire cast were the best! The writing was not vulgar, overly violent and the stories could be watched by the whole family. Not long after the wonderful cast was removed the writing got dark, depraved and not nearly as good as the earlier episodes. I only watched those once but the early episodes I saw many times over. What a shame, there are so few shows anywhere that are not full of sex, violence and depravity. If you are looking for a great detective show not full of filth I recommend Granada production of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett. the genius of the series was that it took Christie's characters and stories and elevated them far above what exists in the books and stories. This is something the final couple of seasons did not do and that is due to breaking up the personal relationships that it was all actually built upon. Poirot on his own is not very interesting. It is how he relates to and with Miss Lemon, Japp, and Hastings that makes him interesting. In addition, the actors chosen "owned" the roles and made them real in a way that doesn't really exist in the books. I still watch this series and find that the show is superb on all levels--including the amazing music.

I think the TV series made great use of the supporting characters, and it is one of the strong points of the series. But then, a weekly TV show is rather different than a series of novels or short stories that become available on no set schedule except as the writer pleases and can manage.

I was disappointed when, Japp, Hastings and Lemon were removed. Later episodes did include Oliver / Wanamaker (?). Overall a wonderful enjoyable series. Narragansett Bay

I found the lady who played Miss Lemon very attractive. In Dorothy Sayers Lord Peter stories the detective inspector marries Lady Mary, the sister of the Duke. Though Peter sometimes must remind him not to use police terminology when speaking to the Duchess and to another Lady. So social mobility was not entirely impossible.

I like to think that all of the characters in the series were part of Poirot. With out these characters he would have been tedious and unbalanced to say the least.

The shows w Lemon, Hastings and Japp were always the best. They added humor and made Poirot more likeable. Some of those episodes without them were rather dark and I avoid watching. I love the lighter, bright and stylish episodes with all them together.

I always liked the updated Christie stories, happening in our time, never liked costume drama much, though I enjoy this Poirot series, and that Downton Abbey

I do like the touches of the occult with Miss Lemon, it adds a bit of tragedy to her. The reason? Well Miss Lemon is a 'Miss' indicating she's never been married, given the timeframe of the 1930's and her age it may hint that she lost a sweetheart in the first world war. Following the war, many were drawn to 'spiritualism' as a way of perhaps contacting lost sweethearts, fathers, sons etc. and getting solace in the belief that there was something in the hereafter.

Nice video I really enjoyed it. I recently watched all the ITV's Poirot episodes again and I still enjoyed watching them no matter how many times I've seen them. David Suchet as Poirot is still my favourite, he's the quintessential (if that's the right word) Poirot in my opinion. I do like the recent Movies with Kenneth Branagh but David Suchet will always be the best. I would of liked to have seen Miss Lemon in more episodes, and even though I like Hastings I didn't mind that he had his own life to follow and got married and moved abroad. (still glad he came back though 😄) I also liked Zoë Wanamaker as Ariadne Oliver she was the perfect actress for that role. Watching the older episodes from season one and so on with that theme tune in the opening titles (and the titles themselves as I love Art Deco) brings back memories of watching them as a kid, hearing the theme tune makes me think of a Sunday evening when it gets dark early and having a bath for school the next day putting PJs on and watching Poirot before going up to bed lol 😂 funny how things can trigger memories, but that's what it makes me think of lol 😂. Anyway sorry if I've rambled on once again great video. 👍🏻

The later episodes without Hastings or Miss Lemon were sterile and plodding compared to the earlier seasons. Poirot's 'sidekicks' brought out his personality more fully, too. The later seasons episodes had more and bigger stars as guests but the productions were really rather dreary. I missed Hastings, Miss Lemon and Japp.

Apparently inspector Japp never learned anything during his many years being proved wrong by Poirot. Always arresting the wrong suspect. Makes you wonder what happened to suspects in cases that Japp handled on his own.

It was a shame it was decided not to include them in all the episodes, but then again it sounds like they werent in the original books as much as they were in the tv series, so I dont think they can complain too much. You didnt mention the character of Ariadne Oliver who was brought in for some of the later eps - she also brought a lighter touch and was well played by Zoe Wanamaker - I liked that she openly made fun of Poirot's idiosyncrasies. Im sure others also spotted that they sometimes used the same actor to play two different characters. The one I remember was the character in Murder in the Mews, the posh fiance of the dead girl and then, ironically, as Poirot's butler in later episodes, though he was noticeably older!

I think Suchet is perfect; but I very much appreciated Japp, Hastings, and Miss Lemon. I think that, yes, Christie was great at plots, but not that memorable for most characters, other than her lead detectives. I thought expanding her side characters in the TV series made it much better. It was a mistake for the producers to cut back on them towards the end of the series.
