I agree with you about the Nikon 400 f4.5 being less ideal for bird photography than the old 500pf. However, the 400 will likely have a broader appeal with sports photographers. I think the 400 f4.5 would be great with a 1.4 tc, putting the focal length at 560mm f6.3. It should also be super sharp as well! If the price is right, I could see myself potentially buying this lens.

As for the wobble, looks like a R5 issue with electronic/rolling shutter. Have you tried the RF600 with R3? In theory, this should not happen if the stacked sensor works as expected.

0:59 My friend has got a similar distortion using A7 iv, but his was much more prominent than yours. When he switched to mechanical shutter, the distortion was gone so we figured out that it was due to using electronic shutter to capture moving objects on a non-stacked sensor. These sensors don't deliver a readout speed fast enough to eliminate the rolling shutter distortion. Only stacked sensors like Sony A1, Nikon Z9 and EOS R3 are capable of shooting wildlife using electronic shutter.
@jan_wegener

Yes, that's all correct, but it doesn;t happen on older versions of this lens, which is odd, if it was only the readout speed

The compact lightweight 400 f4.5 will be awesome for many sports, ski racing is one that comes to mind. Perhaps they are not rushing into a new 500mm lens as many people already own the F-mount 500 pf. The 600 f4 with a built in tc, and the 200-600 zoom are higher priority right now I guess.

Professionall Photographer here (industrial + architecture) The Mavic 3 has less noise with the wide angle than the other drones. This is great as I fly through industrial working spaces a lot. It gets really cramped and dark in most halls. The tele is not the greatest, thats true, but it gives perspectives that were impossible before. The gimbal on the mavic 3 actually is able to turn up a bit more than, other gimbals wich is nice for new perspectives of stuff like bridges. Sharpness overall is great. With the latest update the tele camera can shoot raw wich is a big improvement. Only anoyance so far (have it for a week now) is that the drone brakes super quickly. Prior drones from dji braked way slower wich was more pleasing for video. I have not found a fix for this as of now. I am really looking forward for the 600mm comparisions. I really want to get one for wildlife (hobby). Maybe you can also talk about how it performs compared to the rf 600 f/11. This would give a cool reference for people who want to upgrade down the road.

The 400mm 4.5 is a head scratcher for me. It will need to be significantly sharper or less expensive than the 100-400 to give up the zoom versatility. I would have thought a 600 5.6 PF would fit the lineup better.

@ForrestWest
@ForrestWest 2 года назад
I believe the same camera can mean different things to different levels of shooters. I think for most wildlife shooters the R7 is a more advanced and more than worthy successor to the D500 or the 7Dm2. Only the professionals that shoot long multi-second bursts will need faster buffering and prefer a more weather resistant camera with faster memory cards and a factory battery grip. For the rest of us shooting a couple of second bursts and getting up to 60 shots or more without buffering waits with the auto focus eye tracking modes of the R3, 32mp, 15-30 frames per second, precapture feature with raw files, and focus bracketing for $1,500? Sold! As an R6 shooter and previous owner of the D500 and the 7Dm2 I pre-oredered the R7 and I will be very happy.

You 'will be very happy' with the R7 noise and rolling shutter? Already the rolling shutter on my R5 can make half my swallow or dragonfly in flight shots unisable, and the R7 is worse. Just get the R5 mate. Better noise by far, fast buffer clearing with the cfexb card, better rolling shutter.
@JohnDrummondPhoto
@JohnDrummondPhoto 2 года назад
I can't see the wobble you're referring to, but those are single images. I presume you took fast bursts and noticed variances from frame to frame. Which body were you using, the R5 or R3? The fact that you only saw the wobble with the electronic shutter makes it sound like it's the body, not the lens. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
@jan_wegener

Look ate the termite mound moving around while the edge of the frame stays still. Yes, it's not certain that it is the lens. It happens on 2x R5 & R3, but less on the latter.

A Z series body to replace the D500 is what I have been waiting for to make the move to mirrorless. I hoping it will have the Z9 focus tracking system, two XQD or CF Express card slots. Two Expeed processors, a stacked BSI sensor with electronic shutter. Around 30 MP and and 20 frames a second. I don't shoot video so a so so video capabilities would fine if it keeps the cost down. A built in battery grip would be nice but as long as it's offered as an accessory I would be happy.

In regards to the wobble, I shoot with a Fuji X-T3 and see that wobble effect sometimes, only when using electronic shutter. I had that effect happen on my Fuji X-T20 as well. I didn’t know you got the new RF 600mm. I am debating my upgrade from the EF 600mm II. It’s a tough call right now, since I will probably only get about $7500 for the lens if I sell it. I’ve also heard the version II is better image quality than the RF 600mm or even 600mm III (same lens really). Right now I’m thankfully pretty strong to handhold the 600mm II a lot of the time, but that massive weight difference would be very welcome. I just think canon kinda went cheap on things with the new big glass. In my opinion for all that money they should be lighter and better image quality. Still, with the RF having better autofocus for the big lenses, even with negligible image quality loss it’s probably worth the upgrade. Thanks for sharing your experience. Good to see canon stepping up to take good care of you here.

I had the MAC Studio M1 Ultra, but it had issues with it recognizing cfexpress cards correctly. I never had this issue with the same CFe card in windows. It wouldn’t register it as a removable drive & it didn’t like the file format of the CFe. I use Adobe bridge to offload my cards & Apple doesn’t support anything but Apple, not even a NAS. They recommend that you use the camera directly connected to the MAC to offload photos which took hours. This was my first MAC & it will be my last. I hated using it & it wasn’t worth the hassle so I returned it. I wanted to use thunderbolt 4 to speed up file transfers from my cfe type b card reader which I still will try but on a windows laptop or desktop. For me it was an expensive paperweight.

@@jan_wegener I totally agree! I was tempted to go with the 400 mm D O myself but opted for the 300 mm F2.8 because as it was quite a bit sharper, better in low light, takes teleconverters better, and better complimented my 600 mm. For most wildlife I think people should try and go for a 600 mm F4 And then have a 100 to 400 mm lens for the 100-500 for anything shorter than 600 mL. I just got the RX 800 mm and I’m loving it for close-up work because it’s sharp lightweight and holdable for like forever, easy to take along with me when I don’t want to carry 600 mm and a great option for those who can’t afford a 600mm.

@glynnpowell7864
@glynnpowell7864 2 года назад
This is 100% a symptom from electronic shutter. The sensor is read like a book, left to right. And that’s why the effect is exaggerated vertically. You may be used to the r5, but the glass obviously will exaggerate even further than let’s say your 100-500 on your r5 electronic shutter.

Hello, I got of big chuckle from your comment. I have had my 600mm f4 IS lens (1999 version) since August 2001. I am using it with the RF adapter with the R5. Since I have back issues, I finally broke down and ordered the RF version. The turning point was holding someone else's RF 600mm lens. It was so light that I had trouble feeling the transfer when I gave it back to the owner. It seemed weightless! I have it backorder with two companies and it been two months and still no RF 600mm lens. I planning to go back to East Africa in December. I hope I have it before then. I asked my old 600mm f4 lens if it would forgive me for putting it in retirement. That's how I feel about it. We have been together so long that the lens is part of me. LOL!

Interesting! I had similar issues with my R3 and 100-500 and Canon CPS Virginia dealt with it very incompetently. Sent the lens back to me then asked me what lenses I was using on the R3 when I had the problem. I said send the R3 back and I’m going to send the gear out to the other CPS location. I thin the R3 may have an IBIS issue with long telephoto lenses.

400 4.5 may be a decent replacement for those who have a 500pf and want to ditch ftz. The Z tele converters are much better than f mount. With the Z 1.4xTC you’ll have 560 6.3, only 1/3 stop difference with more reach and maybe better IQ.

Jan I have few questions for you; do you know if a replacement lens foot made for the EF 600mm ii like the one by RRS would be compatible with version iii and/or RF600mm f4? Second question about the protective coat for the 600mm, would you recommend neopreno type? vs the adhesive tape type. When you carry this lens attached to the camera, what type of strap you use and where do you attached it. And last, when you move by car for example and want to have the camera + 600mm f4 kind ofready for action and at same time protected how do you do it? Thanks

I agree that the 400mm f4.5 PF is not the next Z telephoto I would have liked to see. For me, a 600mm f5.6 (or even 6.3) would be ideal. But the F mount 500mm f5.6 works just fine with the FTZ adapter. It focuses quickly and accurately; what's the problem? Meanwhile, I think it's big news that Megadap's new version of its Sony to Nikon Z adapter works really, really well, so some of us can get use the Sony 200-600 zoom on our Nikon Z cameras. This makes it less painful that Nikon's own 200-600mm seems forever to be out there on the horizon, but still not announced. I will add that those of us who are not NPS members are disappointed that the new 800mm f6.3PF is apparently in very short supply and is not being shipped in significant numbers. Oh, well.

Personally I would buy a Sony A7000 (mini A1) around the $2-2500 mark. I can see that this won't be a cash cow for Sony but it could be a way to get a lot of new photographers into the Sony high end photo systems. The A1 is just way too expensive and completely out of reach for most, very strange they haven't lowered the price to at least Nikon Z9 levels yet. And while they are at it, offer some new firmware updates.

I’m fuddled by the decision of Nikon to not make a mirrorless version of that 500 mm PF lens . I mean the f mount version is still quite recent so that might be why Nikon does not think it is necessary to replace it with a new mirrorless version. That’s the sole reason why I switched to Nikon for wildlife photography because of that lens. I used to shoot R5 with the 100-500 lens. But 7.1 at 500 mm really isn’t great in low light situation.

Hopefully that would be internal zoom like the Sony one. Fingers crossed 🤞

Nikon's sensor is designed by Nikon and manufactured by "Sony Imaging and Sensing Corporation." This is different and totally independent corporation from that which designs and produces cameras distributed by Sony. Your suggestion that such puts Nikon at a disadvantage has no logical basis even though often believed by many in the photography community. Nikon has designed and manufactured many of its own sensors, including the D4 and D5 and was capable of producing the Z9 sensor. I am curious how you arrived at your belief, that such an arrangement was disadvantage for Nikon, when employing the largest sensor maker in the world is employed by just about all camera brands, with the notable exception of Canon.

That corporation is wholly-owned by Sony, so it would be hard to say there may not be some influence one way or the other if it came down to it. I have had the EF 600mm f4 IS L ( version 1) since 2008 and just acquired an R5 last September. The lens with the R5 and a battery grip is heavy indeed. The R5 drives the AF OK but you have to set your focus range, as if you use full range, the combo ends up searching and while that was going on, you are missing the shots! I also had more success with birds in flight with the EF 300 f2.8 IS L ( version 1) and TC 2x version III. I believe that my version 1 600mm will be for back yard photography from a blind, or any situation where I do not have to hike with it. I did aviation photography and it was possible to hand hold for brief periods, not so with birds and wild life. Seriously considering the RF 600mm though. Hope this helps you.

Hi Jan, soo, looks like Canon insisted you get some mileage on the EF600/4iii before reviewing the RF600/4 .. now you can find out whether AF advantage with R3 is only available using the RF lens. Like your compatriot, I would have expected "the wobble" to be something in the camera, rather than the lens. But knowing your grundlichkeit, you must have ruled this out, and convinced Canon of your point. Or maybe the wobble is introduced by Lightroom while editing when it's raining outside ? Why it seems to me that you and many other youtubers seem to ignore completely the Canon M series? On this video you said "Canon didn't have any mirrorless APS-C cameras". I don't know if you refer to their line-up as a whole, or just the "for years it has been quiet" timeframe you mention earlier in the sentence. While M6ii came out late 2019 and M50ii in 2020 (even though it didn't offer a huge upgrade), I wouldn't say there have been no new models. Last year was obviously silent for consumer cameras for many reasons. Not that I care much, but after listening to many others talk in the same way, it makes me think whether Canon is offering some extra benefits for "making the M series disappear". :))

@phelanwolf6747
@phelanwolf6747 2 года назад
Is it the AF or is it the subject detection and/or the tracking? All of these are closely related but still need differentiation. For instance the AF performance is heavily dependent on the lense, while subject detection and tracking is not. On the Z6 the tracking mode is even independent from the subject detection. Testing the AF can be done with single point AF. Subject detection tells the camera where it should place that single AF point. Testing the tracking is very tricky since it is hard to tell if the tracking was inaccurate or if the AF could not keep up. Depending on how the issues get reported to the engineers they will start looking at the issues in different ways. If people just tell them that the AF is bad they will most likely check in single AF if it is accurate and as fast as they expect. They will most likely NOT check the subject detection and tracking. For them to check that the description needs to be different, like describing the situation with all settings and the issues with the results.
@HotGates
@HotGates 2 года назад
@@phelanwolf6747 I'm talking about subject tracking, I had both of them out and photographed Swallows on the Z9 I had my Z 100-400 and used AF wide area L and on the R5 I used the rented EF 100-400 and had Zone AF on one button and animal eye detection on the back button AF. The R5 when you were able to get the Swallows in the viewfinder it just locked on where the Z9 would hunt focus but when it got it in focus it would track well, But I missed a lot of shots because of the AF hunting. It's just Nikon needs to fix this with firmware updates but can they?

Nikon Z50 is the D5xxx replacement and the Z30 will be the D3xxx replacement, so their entry level APS-C. There has been zero talk of a potential Z70 (D7xxxx) replacement let alone a Z90 D500 replacement. All I know is Canon has backed themselves into a corner with the R7 which is clearly not a flagship worthy of the 7DII replacement IMO. But it's the last name they could give an APS-C, so they would have to break their naming conventions to introduce a higher end model. It should have been called the R9 leaving the door open for a real 7DII successor in a much higher specced R7. I would be all over the Fuji if they had the lenses, but a 200-600 f/8 that costs and absurd $2K US is not a lens I would ever buy. Fuji needs a 300 f/2.8, 400 f/4, 500 f/4 and 150-500 f/5.6. The 400 f/4.5 PF has the same size element as the 500 f/5.6 PF so that's why they are doing that. I'm disappointed it isn't 400 f/4 as they have shown they can do much larger PF elements with the 800 f/6.3. I would sell my 500 f/5.6 for a 400 f/4 for sure. I would prefer though a new 600 f/5.6 as a birder as with a 400 f/4 I'd have the 1.4x TC always on it. I not sure they have abandoned the 500 f/5.6, it's a matter of the 500 works brilliantly with the Z mount adapter, I know as I use it on my Z9, so there;s no urgency for it to be replaced as it's a very new lens. They have patent for a 600 f/5.6 so I rather that was a priority over a 500 at this stage. I think the use case for the 400 is that it will be lighter and smaller than the 100-400 and 2/3rds stop faster. Often with the zooms and birding, you are at max FL anyway. Plenty of people are using the 100-400 S on their Z9, I'd rather a faster prime and it doubles as a 560 f/6.3
