What Happened to My PEACH & NECTARINE TREE?!? 😱🤕🌳 | Peach Leaf Curl -Why It Happens & How To Prevent

Coming out and seeing my Nectarine Trees and Peach Trees decimated by Peach Leaf Curl is the WORST! The fungus that causes PLC took advantage of the extra wet winter we had. If you've got peach or nectarine trees that haven't yet budded, spray them NOW. I'm hoping for an extra flush of growth to help keep these trees working. Regardless of how this season turns out, I will need to thoroughly spray next winter or it could be even worse.

Peach leaf curl, or ANY leaf curl for that matter, just looks so horrifying. Peach leaf curl prevention is mainly done with a copper funcigide, and is sprayed in the winter as the tree is dormant. Although it's called peach leaf curl, this fungus also attacks nectarine leaves. Leaf curl up is tough on your trees because the leaves are unable to photosynthesize in the same way. Peach leaf curl treatment can be done organically, with a peach leaf curl spray, such as bonide's cooper fungicide. Peach leaf curl treatment doesn't take a lot of time, but can't be skipped. Peach leaf curl fungicide should especially be used the winter after you've had an issue with peach leaf curl (like I have this year). When to spray precisely is up to you, but anytime the tree is dormant should be fine. Nectarine leaf curl and peach leaf curl fungus have thankfully only hit half of my peach/nectarine trees.

UGH... So disappointing when something so preventable takes over my trees! Here is what I didn't get around to using this year: Organic Copper Fungicide (Ready-to-Use) 24oz amzn.to/3511qRW or 16oz Concentrate: amzn.to/2KwBrbQ . Has this year's weather caused you any issues?

Here in NorCal too. I live near commercial orchards and they had it too. I sprayed last year at the end of the season with an well known brand of organic spray, 3 times. Didn't help at all. My neighbor pulled out his peach trees but I refuse, my Saturn peaches are so delicious and my tree is loaded this year. My other peach and nectarine aren't doing well but I'm not willing to give up just yet.On another channel they advised pulling the leaves off as they start to warp and giving a heavy nitrogen fertilizer, I used my aged chicken manure and it is helping to grow new leaves fast. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your video.

I don't think removing the foliage from the tree is necessary (but removing fallen ones from the site is a good idea). You could always just see how your trees do next year. I'd only pull them up if a) they died, or b) if I wanted to plant something else in their place. I think heavier fertilizer is a good move, as this'll create more foliage for the current season, providing vigor for the tree.

I do that as well and, if I'm consistent with eliminating nearly all the leaves exhibiting curl (whose culled, infected portions then get doused in lime-sulfur--a dangerous substance if you don't know what you're doing, especially having your eyes protected), I find that it stimulates more green growth which is less and less infected after about two months of doing this. I let an infected tree just continue on its own years ago, and it never made it past the first season.
@ReflectedMiles
@ReflectedMiles 3 года назад
"The [two spray times] ... kill all that fungus." What a lovely theory. Unfortunately, that doesn't work consistently, either. I used to use copper for several years but found it to be accumulating in soil analysis, so I switched to lime-sulfur spray, which I have been using for several years, and the results for both product on peach leaf curl is what I would describe as "mixed." There seem to be several other factors in play, including varietal resistance. I have two peach cultivars located next to each other, both of which are listed as curl resistant, and both of which tend to flower and leaf at the same time. However, one or the other tends to always be having at least some trouble with peach-leaf curl almost every year. Once in a while, I will get a year when both varieties exhibit few, if any, problems, but those are definitely in the minority. The fruit can also become infected, which is another reason to remove it.

Unhealthy tree will get peach leaf curl. A healthy tree will not get peach leaf curl regardless of how much it rained or how much heat. The fungus that causes the curl is always present whether or not it will Xpress on your tree is dependent upon how healthy your tree is. If you continue to spray oils on your tree you will get toxic soil which ultimately will make your tree even more unhealthy thus making it that you will have to deal with even more Leaf curl in the future. Most backyard orchards main mistake is using entirely too much nitrogen.
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 2 года назад
Yes and no, Lamar. Agree on some fronts, but increased concentration in the soil depends on what you use. Copper builds up, but other methods do not. Also, healthy trees can develop leaf curl, but the degree to which it affects the tree has to do with its health.

@@TheBusyGardener First I’d like to say I really love your channel very informative. I have over 50 Fruit trees in the ground here in New York. 10 years ago I had peach trees with heavy curl and I was fertilizing them like you. 15-9-12 & 16-16-16. ect. Like you I thought the younger trees needed a kick of N to get big. I suffered big time with Curl, insect’s, molds ect. Trees would die in the Winter. Not good. I have a degree in Biology. I knew that these inputs were having a negative effect on my trees. I changed every thing. No more Chemistry in my garden. Biology only. Your chemistry use is what is making you have problems. For example copper fungicide kills all fungus in your soil and on your tree but there are many fungi like Mycorrhizae that are beneficial.If you keep using copper fungicide you will not only kill the fungus that causes Leaf Curl you will also kill mycorrhizae which will give you more problems in other areas. The wood mulch that you use in your orchard its main function is nutrition moisture retention and creation of fungus in your soil. It’s the fungus that breaks down the wood chips but it’s also the fungus that releases the nutrition for your trees, using a fungicide will only stop this process leaving you with deficiencies. I Have not seen Leaf curl in my Orchard in 10 years and I use NO NPK no chemical inputs straight biology. I’m going to recommend a copper treatment for your trees that will not kill your soil. Once the curl stops you will not need to uses this input anymore. The company is called advancing Eco agriculture. ‘AEA Rebound™ Copper’ This is not the inorganic blue copper poison that you have been spraying. This is organic copper the nutrient plant available Micro nutrient. If your soil had to right microbiology it would be producing this copper macronutrient sufficient amounts that your tree would not be getting leaf curl. This product will help you get there faster with out killing your soil microbes. This is a copper vitamin for your tree so that it can fight off Leaf curl with his own immunity. The flower N Bloom that Dave wilson Nursery uses is the only thing that you should use and you should use it very lightly. Less is more.!! I look forward to your next video. Happy gardening!!

If you only have a small garden and one or two trees and don’t want to use sprays just spend 5-10 minutes every day going round yo ur trees and pluck of by hand every curling leave you see and dispose of all the leaves, if you are vigilant and do this every day you will only get 1/3 of a bucket or even less, later in the season the problem just seems to largely go away. Must be done every day while the problem persists, the tree will easily replace any leaves you remove.

Got some peach leaf curl on a couple of my peaches last year when they were fresh in the ground. Slowed their growth quite a bit. This year I bought myself a backpack sprayer and some Liquicop for Christmas. Sprayed my entire backyard orchard in January the week before we had that warm spell, and haven't seen any sign of disease so far this year. I'm hoping that it also knocked out the fire blight on my apples. I don't think it showed up until later in the year last year though.
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 4 года назад
That's great! Looks like that was a wise move this year! Fire Blight is a little different, in that it's bacterial, and transmitted to trees through their flowers by pollinators. I'm not sure if either the copper or oil help with that.
@Fostenel
@Fostenel 4 года назад
@@TheBusyGardener Liquicop is labeled to fight fire blight. Good point about it being transferred by pollinators. Using it as a dormant spray may not help at all with that.

I am in Oregon and this is my arch nemesis! I’ve tried the holistic orchard spray and copper fungicide, neither have worked on anything peach or nectarine related. This year is especially bad. I am pulling off all the affected leaves, maybe 80% to see if I can spare the trees. I may decide to just cut my losses, no fruit so far in 3 years. I put in an Oregon Curl Free peach this year and even the new leaves have it!

I feel for you and know the feeling all too well I use both a dormant oil in the early Winter, followed by Cooper spray mid winter, and again late Winter. Also, if we have a ton of rain for days on end, at any point in there, I’ll spray again with copper fungicide. This has kept the curl away, except for in the first year. I lost about 4 trees that joust couldnt recover and had extremely stunted growth after that. Really mature trees seem to not be as affected by it from what I have seen, in my region.

Hi Julie, only the tree(s) you spray will be treated. It's possible they wouldn't have had an issue this year either way, but treating them will give you a better chance of avoiding curl. You could offer to spray your neighbor's tree if it's close, just to smush out another location for the pathogen.
