Lock In High Yields For The Long Term:
www.silomarkets.com/launch
Nintendo is one of the largest gaming companies in the world. Their consoles and franchises are enjoyed by people of all ages as Nintendo specializes in making fun family-friendly games. The Switch is the latest addition to their lineup and it seems like it’s performing better than ever. It even has the possibility of becoming the best-selling console of all time, but behind all the layers, Nintendo isn’t doing as well as you might think. In fact, they’re only pulling in about half the revenue that they were pulling in back in the late 2000s. The primary reason for this is that in order to make the Switch work, Nintendo had to cannibalize both their console market and their handheld market and bet it all on a hybrid console. While that hybrid console ended up doing really well, it doesn’t quite measure up to the success of a standalone console and a standalone handheld device. This video explains the struggles that Nintendo has been facing behind the scenes over the past 15 years and the obstacles they’ve been in reclaiming their former glory.

There's a lot of context missing here, by the time Nintendo went for the Wii, their sales were getting worse each generation. They aren't just going for gimmicks, they're avoiding direct competition from Sony and Microsoft which requires them to find a new niche over and over. Their peak may have just been a stroke of luck sandwiched between terrible lows. They're basically doing fine. Nothing really happened.

Nintendo still has a library of beloved IP. Now I wonder if the price was high enough. Would they ever sell to Microsoft that would kill to get Mario and company on the Xbox. In fact they tried buying Nintendo in the past and got laugh out of the room, and also, when they bought Rare, they believed they were also getting the right to Donkey Kong not knowing it was a Nintendo only IP 😅

yes, the guy really miss the mark by a very long shot, as if he did his research by reading reddit post about Nintendo from Xbox or PS Fanboy. i'm certain that the guy just want to hate on Nintendo for absolute no reason it was a common knowledge at this point that Nintendo really want to avoid dog eat dog graphic wars, even Sega died from that war. therefore they use a blue ocean strategy. also by incorporating their unique screen and control design, they basically lock in the game into their console, because their game is just too different and can't be played with other console controller. therefore they trapped the marketshare within them, unlike PS or Xbox which there are so many similar third party game, and their game took way more time to create compared to Nintendo game not to mention, Nintendo got Great lineups of first party game, and because Nintendo got a very unique design, therefore when you first get your hand on Nintendo, it was as if you're discovering a whole new gaming world

@@BLACKSTA361 Yes, but Sony also did ride some of that already stablished and maturing market, and also was smart enough to capitalize in the target audience that Nintendo was kind of letting down after the 16bits Snes, the teen and young adult market. Plus Nintendo were pretty slow to evolve and understand the changes in the late 90's, they wanted to control the flow, but was the other way around, PC gaming was booming and many companies wanted to make games, Nintendo played to hard as a gatekeeper, and that put many games on the Playstation, good or bad Playstation brought many more people to make games for them.

Click bait video. Analysis purely made on revenue doesn't say much. Switch is still selling well, even after 7 years of launch, and Nintendo launched not one, but 2 games that are on GOTY. Both off them changed how the industry see games. Nintendo is more relevant than ever. A simple look in Nintendo shares (which are WAY better to look at the health of a company) can see that the price doubled in the last 5 years (this has to do with profitabilty).

He's comparing share prices to their all-time high in 2007, which is odd considering all he tries to hype it up more by saying "that's not even accounting for inflation." That doesn't make sense, nor does he factor in the amount of shares (Nintendo has split shares & increased the overall number significantly), so if they have 1 share worth $70 in 2007 vs 10 shares worth $50 a piece, which is more value? Obvioulsy the latter. Then he says they're LESS diversified now because they merged handheld & home consoles? Did he forget they've branched out into mobile, movies, theme parks, etc. compared to having none of that in 2007? But then again, he also showed Contra, Mega Man, Sonic, Okami, etc. on screen when listing off "Nintendo games," so it's clear he has no clue what he's talking about.

Clickbait video. Nothing happened to them, revenue indicates basically nothing. They’re still as popular as they used to be, if anything even moreso. They got greedy in the past few years but so did Microsoft in the 360 days and Sony in the PS2 days. Focusing on power has never brought them success, besides the SNES. GameCube was more powerful than the PS2 yet was a huge failure. In fact some of their most popular systems, the Game Boy, DS, Wii, 3DS, and Switch, were all vastly underpowered compared to their competition. Despite all the whining about wanting power over gimmicks, seems like the majority of the people prefer just having good games

Not sure if we watched the same video. The only reason revenue is up when the total amount of sales is down is because they increased profit margins. Profit margins can't increase forever and eventually you will drive people away with the higher prices.
@IceBlueLugia
@IceBlueLugia 8 месяцев назад
@@Derekzparty The total amount of sales isn’t really down. The Wii and DS sales were their absolute peak in terms of sales. Using that as a baseline is laughably stupid. Its also just nonsensical because they combined their handheld and console divisions and people now only have to buy one system, of course their total units sold aren’t going to be as high as when they had two separate systems. It’s like saying Sony is doing poorly right now because their systems aren’t hitting the immensely high sales back in the 6th gen and their sales numbers are poorer than the 7th gen, ignoring the multitude of reasons why that may reasonably happen. The video game market fluctuates a lot, with different companies ending up on top each generation depending on a variety of factors, typically whichever company makes the strongest first impression and is the fastest to put out eye-catching games honestly. Nintendo has been on top in terms of sales multiple times, including this generation. Even if we just compare the sales of the switch during its first 3 years and the PS5’s current sales. The reality is Nintendo knows what they’re doing despite people on the internet thinking that their underpowered hardware is some huge detriment to them lol
@rigierish3807
@rigierish3807 8 месяцев назад
“Despite all the whining about wanting power over gimmicks, seems like the majority of the people prefer just having good games” Except the majority of those people aren't gamers: they're casual players. That's precisely the kind of people Nintendo is targeting, and those people don't care about the power of their console. So people don't “prefer just having good games” over having a powerful machine, it's just that the kind of people that are targeted by Nintendo and who are playing on a Switch don't look for a powerful console because they're not gamers who need powerful hardware to run their hungry games or use their device to do something else with it which might require some power. The Steam Deck however, which targets a whole different kind of player, can't pass on its power as a machine to run video games, despite being the same kind of device, a handheld console/PC (for the Steam Deck at least). So don't mix up Nintendo Switch users and the rest of the players: if Nintendo would be a much more open platform that isn't just a device to display Nintendo games only so that gamers would want to use their hardware, then there would be a necessity for their consoles to be more powerful.
@IceBlueLugia
@IceBlueLugia 8 месяцев назад
@@rigierish3807 Yes, because last I checked, people buy systems to play games. Not count pixels. Most people who buy PS and Xbox are also casual gamers who just buy what they want to play the games they want and aren’t measuring the power of their consoles. Usually, when people buy a system, they look at what games it has and maybe if their friends have it too to decide whether to buy it. Nobody looks at specs sheets. So yes, people do just want fun games, they aren’t looking for specific amounts of power. The vast majority of people wouldn’t refuse to buy a PS5/Series X if it’s power was say, the power of 2018 hardware. They buy the system to play games. And the reason I know this is because consoles already can’t get anywhere near the power of PCs, yet people buy them. Not sure why you brought up the Steam Deck. Yeah, who would’ve thought, a company that makes lower budget games doesn’t need insane hardware and doesn’t care about AAA games on their system that nobody’s going to buy anyway. So yes, Steam Deck needs power to run PC AAA games, because those are the types of games it’s running. Steam Deck isn’t powerful because Valve is specifically trying to impress with a powerful system or whatever, it’s powerful because it needs to run the games Valve wants. So, it’s powerful because it needs to be able to play good games. A weak PC misses the point of having a PC instead of a console. And Steam Deck delivers that console-like experience for PCs. That’s all it is, nothing more to it. So no, I’m not mixing up Switch users and the rest of the players. Most players who aren’t PC sweaties (and honestly most casual PC players as well probably) have the same mindset as switch owners. People just want fun games. Nintendo gives that in plenty amounts. As do the other companies. Nintendo just doesn’t need as much power to do that with their games. You should do some research and look into Gunpei Yokoi’s idea of lateral thinking with withered technology. And how Miyamoto talked about disliking the GameCube due to how much Nintendo pushed power and a more mature image in the advertising instead of simple fun, which had worked for them before and since. People like you don’t understand Nintendo, and that’s fine, there’s 3 other platforms for you to enjoy. Nobody’s denying the switch could’ve and should’ve been more powerful, but you all are acting like Nintendo made some unforeseeable “mistake” in choosing portability and cheapness over power when that’s literally what they’ve done for over 20 years.

I would argue that nintendos consoles are NOT gimmicks, they are just willing to experiment more on games than other companies. Look at the power pad and the glove and the light gun from the NES days - they have always been willing to try new things, for better or worse. In fact, I'd say the super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, with their relatively tame approach to game input, are the "least Nintendo" consoles.

As a gamer, I actually admire the way that Nintendo still leads the way in terms of innovation despite not being too much focused on powerful specs. When the Wii introduced motion controls, Microsoft released Kinect and Sony released PlayStation Move. The Switch actually paved the way for portable gaming devices like the Steam Deck and the ASUS ROG Ally to cite a few examples. Even the PlayStation Portal is Sony's attempt at portability (though it's really just streaming from the PS5). In fact, the Gamecube even had a more powerful graphics processor, but its sales was so much less than the PS2 due to marketing and the use of CDs, which were very popular at that time thanks to the partnership between Sony and Philips in developing the technology behind compact discs. In terms of sales, the only reason why Sony and Microsoft have bigger revenues than Nintendo is because their consoles are more expensive (due to them being more powerful). However, the PS5 has only sold 38M units and the new Xbox series, 21M, versus 125M for the Switch. At the end of the day, Nintendo sells the gaming experience--that gaming is not limited to just the hardcore gamers but also to basically anyone. The best-selling games of all time aren't all on the more high-powered consoles, but most of them are on Nintendo systems (Wii Sports, Mario Kart 8, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, etc). With the pressure from gamers and gaming studios to release a more powerful hybrid console, I believe that the successor to the Switch will match the power of the PS4. That being said, a good game doesn't need to have all the fancy graphics--that's just a coat of paint. Good games are well-optimized, enjoyable, and unique experiences that have engaging gameplay and an almost endless replay value. For example, gaming developers have praised The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as a marvel of gaming because of how optimized the game is despite having some of the most difficult--almost impossible to program and develop--game mechanics. Nintendo needs to balance gameplay--something they are very good at--with power--something that has taken a back seat--if they are to continue the success of the Switch.

@@garrusvakarian8709 I don’t think they work the same way. The Vita accesses PS4 through a wireless connection. The games on the Vita are not the same games on the PS4 because the Vita just controls the game that is streamed from the console. In contrast, the Switch is both the console and the handheld. It doesn’t need to be in the same room as another console just to play the games on that console.

Nintendo learned by the time of the GameCube that competing on hardware specs was a losing battle so they leaned into what was always their core strength, incredible game design. Critics get hung up on the hardware gimmicks that followed, but at its core Nintendo was still mostly focused on creating unique gaming experiences that appealed to a much broader and more accessible audience than the already dominated hard core gaming crowd where not just two major console players reigned but also the PC itself. I didn’t buy a Wii because it had motion controls, I bought it because we sports was a blast to play with a group of friends. I didn’t buy a switch because it was also portable, I bought it quite frankly to play breath of the wild and Mario odyssey. The unique and novel and masterfully made games are what make Nintendo stand out in the crowd.

Theres a major detail missing here. While the WiiU was a marketing flop that largely affected the beginning of the cycle. What really killed the WiiU was Nintendo gained an ego from their previous gens and REFUSED to work with Indies. There are countless stories of them outright refusing indies all together as well as hamstringing many studios trying to release games on their console. Furthermore it was incredibly difficult to obtain a Dev kit at the time and you had to go through insane checks just to qualify and they could not like what you were doing and shut it down. They also lacked good documentation on how to use their console and develop for those features. There are even stories of studios getting dragged along for MONTHS stalling development and costing money to the point they had to stop developing games. This was ludicrous and absolutely disgusting. All of this combined to less and less studios willing to work with them and more and more moving to Sony or Microsoft. The WiiU was largely only First and Second Party. This started near the end of the Wii life cycle. The Switch however was their final stand. They completely reversed course and not only welcomed Indies but sought them out. They tried to get any and all games on the Switch and support the devs as easily and painlessly as possible. This led to the Switch having a much larger catalogue than it actually did and meaning a LOT of games were now portable. This led to mending a lot of bridges with their developers and their users. The biggest mistake they made was not letting people who wanted to make them money make games for their console. At the very least making it so difficult to the point they just left. It took time but with that somewhat mended (not fully recovered) its helped.

Some areas I would differ: - Nintendos first gimmick was VR not motion controls. The dual screen gimmick on the DS also came before motion controls in the Wii. - They shifted to gimmicks to differentiate their gaming experience from their competitors who can afford to sell their consoles at a loss and have access to more capital for research and development. - I also believe part of why they rely on gimmicks is to make emulation harder. - The Switch is not a better marketed WiiU. It is a different gaming experience. You can play first party titles in full handheld mode in the airplane. You don’t have to be tethered to a box that is plugged into the wall. Additionally, you can’t have separate screens on the TV and tablet.

Plus also during that time, there was the Global Financial Crisis, so it makes sense people were buying luxuries like videogames less. The middle class never really recovered after 2008. On top of that, a lot of people got into HD and 4K graphics due to PS4 and Xbox and now those people would never go back to Nintendo becauae they consider them to be "for kids". Obviously they're much larger and not handheld, but in 2023 with super powerful phones it seems like they could be better than they are.

the duel screens on the DS was so that the device could fold and be more mobile. it not a gimmick, its built for form and function. looking at most every screen on every device (TV, phone, computers, even micowaves) its only natural screens would get larger. and saying the mobility of the switch is a gimmick is also just a poor point.

Nintendo already found their niche with the Switch. They just have to make it better, and if the Switch is still selling a lot of games they might just take their time with the R&D and make a console that is just the best handheld imaginable.

I feel like Nintendo is still in a decent spot- even if that haven’t released a console for a (admittedly) long time. They are sitting on a money printing machine as the switch has sold a LOT. This does create caveats though for the switch’s successor.. the longer Nintendo waits, the less sales a potential successor could have due to the amount of stuff just on switch right now. Nintendo has to really top the switch to get consumers excited for a next console… backwards compatibility, good launch titles, and excellent marketing. Otherwise this would be a repeat of the Wii U and some of Nintendos other poorly performing consoles. I have a feeling people will stay on the Switch a bit longer or at-least, reluctantly go to a switch successor.

You can just admit you're not a gamer. There are a ton of uses for the dual screens on the DS and Wiiu, as well as the mobility of the Switch. The dual screens allow you to acces menus without pausing, show maps and items while playing, and also keeps the main gameplay screen clear of any overlays. My fiance uses the switch in portable mode often for more casual and relaxing games, but we also play on the TV in docked mode for online or multiplayer games.

I hope this channel would make a video on how Japan has not adopted internet nor anything digital to its full extent. Best example is Japan that still seems to work how e.g. the Nordics worked in 1995-1998. I.e. no digital services, no proper software development for it, not taking advantage of e-services/e-government/digital services on government level or otherwise. It's quite bizarre.

Another misinformation; the Wii-U was never meant to be to play home console gaming remotely, it was to provide a new form of gaming interaction via imbalanced screen types. One man’s “gimmick” is another’s innovation. Nintendo rely on their hardware because they cannot compete on raw power like the others. They have to innovate, and unlike the others, their hardware HAS to be profitable.

Nintendo cannot afford to bet on best graphics and performance in this console market. Their competitors are Sony and Microsoft, two massive hardware and software conglomerates. Nintendo's portfolio is not that diverse, they're still just a video game company. If they try and go for graphics and performance, they can only lose.

I have a 3DS but because I don't know how the Gateway cartdrige work (I have no idea it is like M3 Real Player for 3DS) and have three physical games, this is the least memorable console I have. I have the candy dispenser one. But yeah, since Satory Iwata passed away, the Nintendo magic is gone. Don't forget the disastrous launch of the Switch.

ROFLMAO then fanboism in comments is hilarious. You really poke a hornets nest there . What is revenue and stock value then indicator of business health , these peoples can't accept simple math. Yea they won't disappear or go bankrupt just yet but it also mean their budget for new hardware is slowly disappearing and that's why they pivoting with their brand IP's to new areas like movies, etc... In future Nintendo will probably be just another game developer/publisher company and will never make another console.

0:08 Of the 12 games/franchises showed in this list, only 5 are owned by Nintendo (Pokémon, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario, Super Punch-Out!! and Donkey Kong). And of this 5 games/franchises, only Mario and Punch-Out!!! are mostly developed by Nintendo's internal team. The original DKC trilogy was made by Rare while the modern games are made by retro. Pokémon is developed (and co-owned) by Game Freak.

I wish these companies would just continue selling their older consoles after they release new ones. Also I think it's wrong to say the DS dual screen functionality was completely useless, I think it was a GREAT feature for many types of games. I also think the 3D feature was awesome, it just needed to be embraced more.

They really should stop holding themselves back by looking for budget-tier off the shelf hardware to power their consoles. Sure it helps them not have to subsidize at launch, but the Switch's underpowered hardware is giving third party devs headaches as it's even less powerful than a current gen smartphone

i think comparing nintendo's stock value isn't exactly fair if coming from the perspective of the US stock markets. The Nikkei has been trading sideways since the 90s. While The US has been growing. The rest of the video is good though =). I also think another factor to the gimmicks was that nintendo refused to lose money on console sales like Microsoft and Sony would. They gave way for the switch, And that's a lot more risky for a company like nintendo, Especially when competing against microsoft or sony. who have many products in other markets and not just video games.

I think you take a lot of things out of context. At the beginning you talk like Nintendo is in big problems because they are not as good as 15 years ago. I think it does not matter if you are as good as a long time ago. They still make billions so they are a strong company and the switch sold extremly well. So you talk their current financial state down a bit to much. Then you say that their really old consoles did not sell as good as their newer ones. This seems to me like you very downplay the sales of the old consoles. They came out at a time where videogames where not as popular as today and therefore even if they had lower numbers they where much more impressive than current numbers. Everything must be seem in the context of its time.
