What Happened to Office Space?!

Mike Judge is one of those artists that that captured the attention of young people in the early 90s with sows like Beavis and Butthead and King Of The Hill. His talent at writing characters that somehow stand out-yet perfectly fit in with the average person and our quirks. There is no better example of relatable Mike Judge projects than Office Space- A film that represents the middle-American call center employees of Innotech- a company that truly values the bottom line more than the employee. After being hypnotized to let go of his work and life stress, Peter Gibbons decides his life is much more comfortable when you can show up late (if at all) and stop tightening you tie in favor for loungewear. Just like any great Mike Judge film, this movie packed with laughs, heart, misguided wisdom, and of course more quotable lines than you'll be able to remember. But what went into getting such a pop-cultural hit made for the big screen? Let's talk about it in today's video!

Nothing happened to Office Space in my opinion. It stands as one of the best movies of the 90's. Thanks for the video!

Well, then that’s what happened to it. And I agree with you. Except there is slightly more to the story, hence this video tells that story.

"Hey, Peter, watch out for your cornhole, bud." Diedrich Bader is a seriously underrated comedic actor.

“I’ll tell you what I’d do. Two chicks at the same time.” Peter laughs and says “Really?” Lawrence gives him a death stare 🤣 Another great piece of acting is Lawrence going through his fridge to get a beer, Peter offers an opener and Lawrence just smoothly goes “that’s alright, I got my own” in the middle of telling him how to avoid his boss. Master class there by Diedrich 😂

All time classic. Peter dismantling his office life to the bobs is classic on so many levels. Before entering the work force I thought the film was good but after living office space..it became an all timer. The canibus song is my work ringtone

I saw this movie in the theater on a Saturday night in Jan 1999. On Monday morning I was marched from my cube to a room where I was downsized from my application engineering position despite confirming my excellent performance. As I carried my belongings my car in the snow covered parking lot the corporate helicopter took off, flew over the parking lot, and caused me to be pelted with snow and the sand put down that night for traction. I have a special relationship with this movie.

I remember the smoke from those fires back in 1998. It was really weird. I worked in a building in North Dallas near where the opening highway shots were filmed at that time. The place I worked was a tech company similar to the one in Office Space. I didn't know it was filmed in Texas until I first saw it. I was blown away by how accurate it was depicting office life in Texas in the 90s. So much beige!

The first time I saw it, I hated it. The second time I saw it was after my first office job. I cried laughing. The same exact day I watched it again I got the whole "four different bosses telling me about the memo." It matters a lot more when you have been in that environment.

I love, love, love Office Space. When I first saw it, probably on Comedy Central but definitely in college, I didn't understand it. When I saw it a few years later, after getting my first office job, everything clicked. This was a documentary. Every time a piece of equipment breaks down, my computer freezes, I think of the scene where they are taking the fax machine to the field for a beatdown. This is wish fulfillment at its finest. It's a cult classic now, but it still deserves better!

I'd never even heard of it until hanging out with some work friends, it hadn't been out on VHS too long and someone had it and a group of us watched together, there were a few of us who hadnt seen it. Funny how that used to happen with a lot of good movies, they'd just slip past you. I hope teens and young people still get together in person and discover movies like this one.

Once I worked in an office that enacted a 'Casual Friday' rule, well guys came in shorts and girls came in wearing even less so they sent out a memo changing Fridays to Business Casual Fridays. After much complaining and some debate they finally settled on "Relaxed Business Casual Fridays", no one I asked had a clue what that meant.

Not only is this one of my favorite comedies I own in my personal DVD collection it was one of the favorites of several of my Army buddies. While deployed in Iraq, we even recreated that scene with the copier using a broken boombox. Next to Idioacracy, it ranks as the best film from Mike Judge, who I have been watching since Liquid Television. I feel like I share a lot in common with Judge having a major interest in all things animated, and I also pursued a career in electronics technology. I have worked multiple office jobs as well, and I can confirm everything in this film was incredibly accurate in working in them. I have never understood how this movie didn't do better when it was so good. Every person I have ever shown it to also fell in love with the film.
