True Crime is a part of everyday media that the TV series, specials, films, and documentaries all about it have been around forever. But actually, that's not the case. The format we now see, wasn’t the norm at all in the 80s. A weekly series built around cases and interviews with the people who were a part of them, re-enacting the crimes…had never been done before.
But then one day a series came along that would not only showcase True Crime but would also give us ghosts, UFOs, and all points in between. Not only that, but the theme song would cause PTSD in most kids my age who had the fortune or misfortune to hear it. That series is Unsolved Mysteries, a series so popular that it changed not only pop culture but the way investigations within law enforcement were conducted.
Today on Gone But Not Forgotten, we’re delving into the question of what happened to Unsolved Mysteries.

Anyone watch the classic 'Kentucky Fried Chicken' Movie? They had a coupla sections called "Bullshit... Or not?" Where the presenter (in a similar format to these kind of shows) would describe various Crime/Mystery scenarios, like was Londons' Jack the Ripper actually the Loch Ness monster ('Nessy'), and other scenarios, and asking the truly great question... "Was it just bullshit? Or not?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 😎🇬🇧

Like using the original intro and music and at the very least taking public votes on which ones they think are the best and to still continue with the re-enactments. There was no greater terror that a child could experience like hearing the musical intro of unsolved mysteries.

6 bars, 8 tones, played on a keyboard (with effects), and you got the music that can rival any horror movie.

This was one of my favorite shows growing up. Robert Stack was the perfect fit as the host. I really liked the updates they gave on previous episodes. The music at the beginning was perfect as well. Some of the stories they presented happened in the cities I have actually lived in, some even a few miles from my home address. I used to drive past some of the areas where the crimes actually occurred. Great show, they don't make classics like Unsolved mysteries anymore.

I’m 44… this show was the cause of MANY of my childhood nightmares… the THEME Music killed me every time I heard it!! I feel like they didn’t play it here maybe for copyright reasons? And even as an adult, I can say I’m glad I didn’t have to hear it because it would’ve given me PTSD. Edit: oh shit they just played it! Well🥺, I guess I’m not sleeping tonight. 😅

I tried explaining to my 9yo just how much this theme used to scare me. So I pulled it up on youtube and she looked at me like I was crazy lol. I remember one story in particular scaring me a lot as a kid, and it stuck with me, too. Then in my early 20's I was watching the reruns on Lifetime a lot, saw that same episode and noticed the guy who scared me in it was none other than Bill Moseley, one of my favorite horror actors.

You can’t just play it cold on RU-vid in the middle of the day silly. That takes away from the allure. You gotta play a full episode at night, with the sound kicking a bit.

I love that show as an adult today. When I was a kid, it scared the crap out of me when the music started. I wish they’d make the TV show a weekly series again .. They did have unsolved mysteries as a podcast and I loved it and they just canceled it.

Having Robert Stack's voice augmented with a haunting echo as if he was always in the "Twilight Zone" also contributed to the foreboding vibe of the series.
