I'm in Oregon USA. We are getting a ton of rain this year. More than normal. The last two years were very dry. About 10 years ago we really had a lot of rain and my back yard closest to the house was flooding. You can dig a hole about 8 feet from your banana trees. At least 12 inches in diameter. Fill it with gravel. We did it with an Auger. It draws the extra water from the trees or what ever it's by and acts like a well drain. It saved my place.

We totally understand the weather screwing things up. No rain for a solid month and then 5 inches of rain and 50mph winds in a period of 2-3 hours. I definitely lost some plants during that storm. Almost all of my corn fell over and/or snapped. My lettuce took a beating...a lot died. My peppers and tomatoes somehow held on(for the most part.) Hope by now the rain has given you a break.

I’m in Oregon and it hasn’t stopped raining here either, usually we have at least 6 weeks worth of sunny or partly sunny days but all rain this year. I predicted this when I saw not only the Hunga Tonga volcano as well as 52 other volcanic eruptions, and since I knew this was going to happen because it has always done this when we have a combination of excessive volcanic eruptions as well as the sun being 2x more active and 2 years ahead of its solar cycle, I prepared for this, and since people think something else is causing it they don’t bother preparing for something which has always happened 100% of all history.

You are my favorite person on RU-vid. Period! I come for the insight and stay for the jokes! I’m in Richmond Virginia USA and we can get a lot of rain. I built roof shelters over my 4 raised beds. So they are like semi-greenhouses. 1x1s, brackets, and clear plastic lining. It’s helped so much especially with the tomatoes! All the plants still get the sunshine through the plastic tops, fresh breezes, and beneficial insects from the sides.

I really hope this stops for you soon so that you don't lose any more fruit. Could you dig a trench around the bananas as a way to drain them temporarily? April was dry and somewhat mild, but may has been record-breaking dry/hot. Its been 90-100F for almost a month now with no rain. Im watering my raised beds every day but it just got too hot too quick and I don't think a lot of my veggies will have the strength to make it through the summer. Last year we had your problem. I'm in Europe, but we had some crazy rain events too. In one case, all was fine (and dry) until I came from work and got nearly flushed down the street! I was on foot, but struggled against the water running downhill. One time, half the years average came down after a particularly dry summer. It was the worst flood in my life. The past few years had some seriously humid weeks that caused moss to grow everywhere and worse: fungal diseases on all sorts of plants...

Thank you for all the great tips, tricks and dad jokes, Mark 👍😂 My apologies if you should have made a video in regard to this before,, but I did not find one. My question: Do you have an estimate, what area of land is necessary to provide one person with vegetables and fruit (self-sufficiency)? I will be purchasing some property next year and already plan to have some quail and enough land for (food) self-sufficiency ... maybe not 100% all year round, but at least through summer/autumn ... Thanks again for all the amazing videos and lots of love from Ireland ☘️

This is an interesting question that has been up for much debate, In the US for true self sufficiency it was 40 acres (16 Hectares) and a Mule in days of old. Now with a good small tractor and equipment you could reduce that by a third. If your willing to give up large livestock you could reduce it more, and if you truly want to have only veggies and trees maybe two hectares (5 acres) and if you go full high tech like I did one acre (1/2 hectare) of tillable land. I have a small green house that is solar heated and solar powered for year around production ( side note this is a whole lot more complicated than just a hoop tunnel) and some hens but I do have to buy some feed, I have figs and grapes and pear trees, some raised beds and some in ground planting using various methods and a hydroponics wall. That is about all I can keep up with and hold a job as well. For where you live I am sure the setup will be different.
@deires77
@deires77 2 года назад
Thanks a million@@paperburn! 😘 I was thinking to get about an acre. I am not too much into meat, but would want to keep some quail (for eggs and meat) and quite possibly some chicken too. Most smallholders here have some sheep /goats as well, but since I am a hundred percent sure that that would be too much for me I'll pass. So veggies and fruit. I think in regard to grain/corn I'll "cheat" and buy it ... The solar heating greenhouse is an amazing idea! Not sure if you have ever been to Ireland but my main reason so far for planning on a greenhouse was the rain (plenty of it here 😂) but if it was warmer for longer too ....,🤔🤗 So quail (meat and eggs) potatoes and nuts for the calories and then apples, pears, plums, (various) berries, winter and summer veggies.... I still got a lot to plan 😂 Have a good one and stay safe! Love from Co. Dublin 😘

@@deires77 hey sister, wishing you best of luck with your plans. Although i have Welsh and English ancestry, i'm only familiar with the Australian climate, or at least parts of it. Grew up on a small farm, the majority of which was land for cows and sheep. My spatial relations aren't the best but if you wanted to go without such livestock you could make it loads smaller and stick with an orchard and...well we had chickens, turkeys and pigs. I have no idea about quail but compared to the paddocks, this was possible in a relatively compact area. So on one hand you wouldn't have beef, lamb and cow milk. On the other hand, your neighbours might have excess milk they are happy to give/share or trade. It's tricky to be 100% self sufficient in every single regard anyway. One thing to note about this set up though is that it's never, you know, snowing outside or anything. And that is prob significant because housing needs for animals likely differ significantly in much colder climates? Anyway, good luck! I would love to have a chance to try this way of life again. I do miss it. But it can be very high maintenance and if you are solitary and animals are depending on you, and you take ill with no help to hand, it could be very stressful. So i think a) ensuring you don't bite off more than you can chew is eminently sensible! and b) think of contingency planning ahead of time before committing to certain animals. For example, if you twist your ankle, and there's no one to help, are there methods you could use to ensure animals remain fed/cared for etc? Would pre-emptively volunteering to help others be a good backup? What if you needed to spend some time in hospital, or simply wanted a holiday? Etc. Would love to know how you go. Good luck, luv!

G'day Bridgit, and thank you. When it comes to area and growing food or self-sufficiency, of course, the bigger the better (is the very short answer). Having said that, you can be self-sufficient in many things and grow as much food as you need in a relatively small area. There are plenty of small urban backyards around the world full of food that people grow, eat, and preserve. The only main restrictions on smaller properties are animals so if you do want to keep livestock you do need an appropriately sized block with the right zoning to keep such animals. All the best with your property hunt and purchase! Cheers :)

I feel your pain. Leaving near the coast on the east coast of a continent like you means constant rain year round, and we get so much of it in the summers! It is hard to explain to folks how destructive our rain can be, and I often pray for drought, because drought isn’t sustainable where we live. I’m thankful my soil is sandy at least, because that helps mitigate the rain damage.

Missouri can get so bad with rain we plant the tomatoes and tender vegetables next to a side building with a retractable awning. It angles into a rock berm that helps shed the water. I wish we had done this 25 years ago. The side building has a white wall that reflects sunlight, extending the ripening season a few weeks further. This idea came from the retractable awning on the deck used to protect container plants from too much rainor sun.

I have a block in a Sydney suburb that is as sloshy as yours. The ground is sodden. I haven't tried to grow anything in my veggie bins except the tomatoes that I had already planted and they have gone crazy and are covered in tomatoes. I haven't had fungus but the fruit is slow to ripen because we haven't had much sun. I had a huge Italian zucchini vine that went crazy it had a big crop but I pulled it out so other things could get air.The sweet potatoes in pots look ok and there's a healthy looking pumpkin vine going up a sunny fence and doesn't have fungus. It's just not fun walking around in the slosh.

😆 Isn't it funny how fast we forget? Mulch to keep the weeds down and the moisture in. 🤔 I know the rain is a pain in the rear but, it will dry up and get hot, again...Then, it will be back to looking at the skies to see if we have to go stand in the hot sun to water. It just goes to show, you have to love the gardening itself, and are thankful when we did something- anything right, to get something to produce for us. ☺

Before i forget, one plant you might want to try in sandy/poor well drained soil is Italian parsley. I grew it in a questionable location without that much sun after first having added a bunch of banana peel to condition the poor sandy soil somewhat. Not sure about your area, but in most places, councils and other utility companies will usually drop off truckloads of woodchips on your driveway for absolutely free. Woodchip mulch will retain all the excess moisture and keep it from pooling in the soil. It will also break down and feed your trees through summer. It doesn't drown plants like grass and straw do. It actually creates a good aerated environment. Woodchips that are mixed with random leaves are the best as they help with the nitrogen needs of the woodchips to break down.

Wow too much rain even for the hogs, and that's saying something. Well across the ditch here in Raglan NZ, its been a drought with virtually no rain since December - and now the wet has started and doesn't want to stop. Being able to depend on the seasons to do what they used to is a thing of the past methinks. Loved seeing how your raised beds survived intact, and great hint about the mulch.
