Tsotsi, Jerusalema and four corners were the best movies to ever come out of South Africa. "What happened to South African movies?" The employees in the South African movie industry became lazy that grant money that the government funds the industry got to the employees' heads because they know they will get paid whether they produce quality or trash FULL STOP.
@viwekenneth6028 A lot of American movies and shows shoot either in Joburg or Cape Town to cut costs or for visual aesthetic. Dredd, Tomb Raider, Netflix One Piece, etc, are just some examples of this.
South African movies these days are American movies with a South African accent you'd think the Netflix stimulus check would help but I think its making things worse
I'm a RU-vidr as well but I respect your Craft Bro. The Effort of compiling all these snippet &/or Clips is insane 🥵👌🏾🥵 Keep on Pushing my Guy 💚💛❤️ You got this
The problem IMO is that the film industry doesn't have a strong famous legacy brand studios that consistently attracts paying audiences, especially amoung black people.
Bra yam', thank you. I have been contemplating writing a script and doing a video on South African movies as well. My first movie analysis is supposed to be on How to Steal 2 Million starred by the late Menzi Ngubane.
In the 2000s we had great movies like district 11 and mr bones heck leon had great movies. We had some in the 2010s like inumber number but now eish they missing something
New subscriber here, love your content. Keep pushing my G... i can tell youre a pop culture fanatic, especially when it comes to local content. Its going to be an amazing journey to watch your channel grow and your content improve with each video
Leon Schuster is indeed a Legend, Such a great character! @Penuel should get this man on the POD... @KONVO Before he passes away... My favorite movie by him is Panic Mechanic, and perhaps Mr. Bones!! (No they're all great and funny af) and by the way, I had no idea that was the storyline behind "MAMA JACK" ....saw it too young and was probably just laughing at the funny stuff and missed everything else. haha
Leon would be accused of cultural appropriation, and black face these days. So yeah, and most people wouldn't approve of Tsotsi, Jerusalem and my mom favorite Yesterday etc cause those movies have the weird tendency of portraying black people in the worst light (being gangsters, HIV positive, and basically only having tragic experiences) like a lot of kids I grew up with gained the stigma towards people living with HIV because of Yesterday/Izulu lami which was crazy cause those movies were teaching how dangerous that can be
Yeah true dat mft I think we couldn't understand what those movies were portraying but they are still pivotal and important. We kinda need those harsh truths in our media these days imo but it is about balance in portraying black people in our media.
The best thing about South Africans is that we don't care about what Americans and their sensitive cultural phenomenon think about us Leon Schuster is doing blackface and cultural appropriation ? Black people don't care here, we still love him and his type of comedy doesn't bother us We thrive in offensive comedy
i can't agree nor disagree with your opinions since i have not seen the movies you talked about in this video but i can tell you from my experience with movies from my country (the 2 or 3 i've seen) are pretty ok but i will have to see these movies that you talked about some time because you made them sound like must watch movies love the vids keep it up
Jerusalem was phenomenal! Used to love that movie so much. Idk why but I've always thought Tsosti was overrated, I still do. I mean it was dope but still wasn't all that, realistically speaking.
Nah dawg, movies just don't hit the same anymore, but I don't think it's the creatives problem and more so the higher ups who are not willing to invest in African movies
Leon Schuster and Rapulana Seiphemo used to feed us. Now they're saying the actors need to be paid monthly, which is understandable but why can't they do both their telenovelas and movies? because at the end of the day it's mostly movies we remember than storylines of a specific season. the bad characters live long, there's no redemption or goal just endless drama.
Back in the day! go to my friend's house to borrow the CD and another friend to borrow a dvd player then another friend to get ama inputs for the tv then back home to connect everything to the tv endlini and watch Jerusalema!!!!! legendary moments
Back then, the choices in South African cinema often leaned toward gangster themes, political stories, Leon Schuster comedies, or heavy dramas-usually with weak scripts that prioritized the message over artistry or entertainment. For me, the best South African film remains District 9, even 15 years on. There's no African film like it; its CGI is still the best in Africa and competes with Hollywood sci-fi of today, and it’s packed with action, imagination, and all the essentials of a true sci-fi classic. Set in Johannesburg, it also perfectly balances the social commentary. Growing up, and still today, I can’t stand films like Long Walk to Freedom that keep rehashing the same old, predictable narratives. And don't get me started on Netflix Mzansi movies 🤮
I don't even know any recent south african movies, thats how bad it is, the last one I watched I think was chappie. And its so dissapointing ngoba as a country we have so many stories from black culture to white culture there are so many nuances that would make a great plot for a movie, yet our movie directors and screenwriters not in just in film but also soapies focus on druglords and a million sex scenes.
Ey mft I love your content. Ey khona u right. Piano love dawg ay ay ay udotiiiiiiii til tii tiii. All the new Netflix stuff is just ahhh it's predictable from a mile away. Ay ay kubi
I personally don't want to support the action movies because they're always about gangsters, always has the same actors, and they always apper on Netflix and not Showmax. I don't like movies that depict crime in SA because we have so much crime here. I know people that became CIT robbers because they liked Gadaffi on generations. Moviese have an actual impact.
I totally agree with your sentiment we haven't gotten that many different stories when it comes to action. There's so many stories that we as SA have like the folklore type stories and I'm not even gonna mention Fantasy or a lil bit of Sci Fi
I thought you'd actually review the movie, Piano Love, and actually tell us what you disliked about it. Instead, you just went down a nostalgia trip telling us about movies from the past. I'm still yet to see a reason why that new movie sucks.
