Actually most store brand name products are made by major brands and if you have a preferred product just try store brands until you find it sometimes all they do is cut down on the salt we found one that tastes just like shake and bake just needed a little saltso if you try Walmart lunch meat and it tastes like Spam it's probably made and packaged by the same company just made a little different to keep people from seeing the exact same ingredients in the exact same order

It's actually because wherever the US military had a significant presence SPAM became extremely popular in the area. Hawaii, Korea, the Philipines, Okinawa, they all love the spam.

Especially great in fried rice, with (often instant) noodles - soup or dry/fried, in a sandwich etc. It would be eaten alongside other dishes with hot rice during family meals growing up. It's still served in local cafes now with bread/as a sandwich, while the popular hipster iteration is spam fries.

I work at a grocery store and spam is the only thing we never have to worry about facing, because it's the only thing that never sell. Like ever. I think a can fell over once and i put it back but aside from those rows of spam aint never been touched. So weird seeing comments like these.

We've tried every SPAM knock-off brand w could find and they are all substandard, except for one: Great Value. We were actually shocked how delicious it is. I doubt most people could taste the difference. I don't know how they do it.

Personally, I have never eaten their version of spam, but all the other Great Value products I've tried are incredibly similar to the brand name versions. I don't know how they do it either, but it is quite impressive indeed.

@Chris Rock That absolutely happens with some products! Especially with companies, such a Trader Joe's and Costco. They contract with for their brand to replace an original. I said "I don't know how they so it!" but there is good info out there about food manufacturing. While some "knock-off" products are actually manufactured by the original brand's own facilities, there are also "co-packer" manufacturers/factories that do nothing but make products for other companies, and label them by request. Brands can contract these manufacture for their exclusive secret recipes. The reason they _must_ be secret is that food recipes cannot be protected by intellectual property or design protection laws. For "duplicating" secret recipes there are development companies with food scientists who can figure the indredients, processes, and recipes out. Sometimes in food products a certain characteristic and taste is a result of the manufacturing methods of scale, using custom designed equipment, or even the charecteristic of a certain raw material that the company itself is the only producer. Meaning... you _cannot_ perfectly duplicate it at home or in a different manufacturing facility. Sorry if that is not much little detail! LOL! You can compare food labels carefully and get an idea if two products are identical and just a "relabel." (FDA ingrededient and nutritional labeling regulations are quite specific and somewhat costly to develop and certify, so two identical brand will show identical ingredient labelings. When you look at SPAM labels and all other brand labels, they can be very different. Great Value is the closest! GV does not have the Potato Starch (added to SPAM later for texture, as noted) and lists the meat as Pork, and not Pork and Ham, like Spam. My thought is that the GV brand, in this case, is contracted manufacture through a copacker, who has tried to closely duplicate the Hormel recipe and process. Thanks for your reply! :)

Those balikbayan boxes could contain clothes, food, and basically any other stuff. Since Spam is considered expensive in the Philippines, we love it when our relatives abroad send us Spam through those balikbayan boxes
