GUYS u won’t believe what I just found out. They wanna make a movie about spirit, YEAH U HEAR ME, in 2021. But it’s not about this movie. It’s about this shitty series on Disney channel with this little girl. I am actually so mad
My theory is, that Strider was captured shortly after Spirt was born, or sometime around before the winter where spirit gets his tongue stuck on ice, Think about it, all the horses at the army knew who Spirt was, as if they recognized who he was, likely that when strider was captured that some of his herd was as well, horses have good memory of their herd members. Esperanza, cried to spirit when he was captured, more likely that she was there when her mate and herd members were also captured. You can tell she was fearful once more, crying and tempting to get him, but couldn’t because she knew she had to take care of the herd once more, again.
Esperanza: Spirit's mother, a Palomino, calm and tolerant of her rambunctious son. Strider: Spirit's father, a pure black stallion that was the former leader of the Cimarron herd, Spirit succeeded him. He was later on captured and put in captivity and died from not being used to it.
@@lorinctoth9402 I mean that's be pretty fucked up because you see these white dudes killing natives in the movie and they wanna talk about "AMerIcA hAs LiBeRTy". But I agree with the concept of the eagle representing freedom for the horse, not necessarily an American thing.
I theorize that Strider went through the same thing Spirit went through, being taken by the army and broken. Spirit's mother Esperanza (Which means Hope in Spanish, and like Spirit being a free spirit, she is very hopeful for her son to come back) was under extreme duress when he was being taken. It's possible that the same thing happened with Strider, and Hope didn't want the same thing to happen to her son, which explains how he could be listed as dead, probably dying by being shot or exhaustion.
@@lazyrat6687 That does make a lot of sense. Even for the scene where the eagle flew above him and Spirit falls under his shadow. Spirit than sped up and "stepped out of the shadow of his father".
Considering Indigenous culture was also a main theme in the film, they did believe in reincarnation (like in Brother Bear, the older brother Sokka is reincarnated into, ironically, an eagle), it's kind of neat if that was added in there intentionally if that's the case
@@meap6474 we still do believe in reincarnation even though the ways of our people have long since died out I am Cherokee which are a sister tribe of the Lakota
As a kid, I always thought that the horse the colonel was riding when Spirit jumped over the canyon was his dad. But I only thought that because that horse looked so proud when Spirit jumped.
I like the thought, but every one of the army horses rooted for Spirit every time he triumphed, and were sad when the Colonel almost broke him, and even attempted to aid him when chasing him - that one horse that decided to randomly jump under a ridge to knock his rider out - the horses stopped chasing when riderless, they were on Spirits side, they didnt want him to lose. They lost their fight, but seeing Spirit keep fighting gave them hope. And when he succeeded, he won the battle not just for him, but for them too. The Colonel's horse was probably more like "Good going, mate, you did it." "because that horse looked so proud when Spirit jumped." All the horses in frame were happy to see him escape, not just the Colonel's horse.
nice little theory but Spirit's dad is a pure black stallion who was actually killed by the colonel. The stallion's name was Strider, and Spirit's mother was Esperanza.
That's interesting, when I was younger I thought his dad could be the horse the colonel was riding, or maybe related to him in some way since he looks a bit different, and he can't even look at him when the colonel fires his gun... But then I also think "nope" because it looks like a different breed.
My theory is his dad just passed of old age. If I remember the fandom said his name was Strider and he was a black stallion. Which makes sense. But spirit is based on the ACTUAL HORSE that is a kiger mustang who is still alive and well. So my guess is that his father just simply passed on.
Also at the end credits of Spirit they don't call Spirits mother Esperanza, they just caption her as Spirits mom. But when the books came out they started listing the merchandise off the that name, Breyer and Hasbro started having products and models made of their called that. And Rain had her parents from the books made official by being registered as a real horse in the American Paint Horse Foundation.
Oh hey, thats my footage of Donner! (Could I possibly be credited lol) I really like this video, but to confirm the books ARE Canon, but they all end before the movie takes place. Sierra ends right after Rain is born, and Esperanza ends before the herd is formed. The story of Spirit himself is fictional, but was planned to have a second movie, shown with the official Breyer horse sets that have a foal.
@•Whispering Shadows• I just want to know why you have decided to hate somebody for not crediting something, this could not even be their footage or they could've found it from a source where they haven't been listed.
For the two of you, I have contacted OP on twitter a few times and have this comment, but there has been no response currently, which has been annoying me since they upload and tweet regurarly.
Kathleen Duey did write the official novelization for the movie, in fact that was the first of the series of books that go into the stories of the ancestors of Rain and Spirit. And I know that book exists because I found it in my high school library many years after the movie came out XD Never found the sequel books unfortunately, but they are considered canon I believe. And no, the movie is not based on the book series, they were written in conjunction with the film (nor is the movie based on the life of the horse they used as inspiration - they just used him as the model for Spirit because they liked how he looked, and based the other characters on RL horses too).
I was born on the exact day that this movie came out and I was obsessed with the movie ever Since my parents bought it for me because I loved horses, I never knew why but I did. When I watched it it almost felt like I was in the story. Years later when I was 13, my dad took me to see the real life spirit that they used for the movie. When I had gotten there he was in a pasture and there were all these people here. He turned toward me and he came up to me. He let me pet him as if we had been friends for years and it did feel like that. Then a worker came up to me and told me he has never done something like this before. She then saw our connection and let me lead him to his stall and feed him. I like to think he and this movie has helped shape who I am since before I was born.
What about the black horse we see when Spirit is born? The shot shows a group of horses and one of them is black and to me seems the most excited about Spirit being born
I'm so sorry. Forgive me. I don't watch Spirit much in my childhood. But I'll try to give it a watch when I get the DVD from Amazon. But I'm happy to see you in a good mood and gushing about a movie you love!
As far as I'm concerned, Duey wrote Esperanza and Spirit the same year the movie came out as a prequel and novelization as a request from Dreamworks but I might be completely wrong about that, and the two previous books feature Sierra (Rain's mother) and Bonita (Rain's grandma). I strongly believe Strider died before, if not shortly after Spirit was born, I know how horses behave in the wild so I don't really wanna think of my boy kicking his dad off... On the other hand I believe Spirit capable of kicking off his own son, Jr. as he leads a different herd (then overthrown by another Stallion named Smoke later on) in the netflix series because honestly he sucks as a leader lmao, he wasn't present to defend a mare and her foal from a cougar, she dying and her baby (who has the same colors as Rain, ha, fun thing, might be her grandson in the end) an orphan, as he, Spirit Jr. prefers to spend time with a human girl. I'm still mad about it lmao.
Agreed, the series is shit and we all should ignore it. It isn't Canon, they totally ruined everything. Why is spirit even letting a girl ride him? Why is he celebrating Christmas? Where is rain? I've only got pain and hatred from watching it. We should March to DreamWorks and demand that stupid series end and those stupid little girls die because they are so annoying. Viva la resistance
@@samthegolddragon5110 they are indeed annoying, although I can’t fault them completely, the series are a total cashgrab and are doing well. Then again I’m disgusted by the way they have Spirit Jr. behave, it took Little Creek maybe a year of trust building for Spirit Sr. to allow him to ride him, yet for Jr. it takes a couple days to get his trust, he’s not very bright.
@@samthegolddragon5110 the new one has a blaze not solid faced and is the original spirits son look it up and very similar to my own first horse i ironically named spirt because i was supposed to get this black paint mare named that but they gave her to the other person that looked at her, instead of me (dispite putiing a deposit to hold her) so i rescued a buckskin qh paint that reminded me of the movie from a amish dealer/trainer/rehaber that helped prevent him going to a killbuyer
and what did you think of the move it's fun too watch Lol. I love that move so much what are you up too now Dark wolf ??? am I your bast friend now you had see the move Bambi that's the 1 I really lake
I was one of the people that mentioned the books xD Yes, books, plural. From what I can tell, these are official novel tie-ins, and aside from Spirit's own novel, are pretty much prequels. I do wonder why they got no coverage though, could just have been shitty advertising on DreamWorks' part. The series is called Spirit of the West and from what I can find there are four books about four different horses. Bonita (Rain's grandmother), Sierra (Rain's mother), Esperanza, and Spirit himself. Esperanza's story explains how she came to join a new herd as a filly alongside her family after their own leads died. Strider was her playmate as a foal, but as adults, they were separated from the larger herd by a storm and decided to go off on their own. I don't actually have the book myself so I have to go off what the internet says, but supposedly Strider was a very protective, proud stallion, and Esperanza actually ended up humbling him somewhat. Seems like Spirit was a chip off the old block, then. I don't know how the book ends, but it does seem to be implied Strider dies between the events of the book and the movie. One fan-wiki says he was captured by humans and died in captivity, but I can't find anything backing that up. Edit: I posted this before I finished watching the video, nevermind you also read the wikis lol
I'm so loving your Spirit content! Please, keep them coming. There's so much to cover and it is such an underrated gem. Bless you for doing this! I've been starving for some good quality Spirit videos. Maybe next time you can make a video about Rain and a theory about how she befriended Little Creek? That would be SUPER interesting.
There is a prequel book about spirits mother esperanza and his father strider btw its cannon and it's also cannon that his moms name is esperanza and his fathers name is strider
"Not so many Spirit fans" Oh honey, you best believe almost every horse lover loves this movie! Plus, there's people on the Amino app who has a community that have 2k+ people in it! No hate lolol
@@lampadudle i know that feeling but i got the hang of other animals and humans with some practice and time...even if my cats look like mini horses at times...
When I watch it with other people I loved it and most of the others didn’t like it because the animals didn’t talk like micky mouse (I love the SOUNDTRACK ITS AMAZING)
I think his dad was captured in a similar way to how Spirit was. It just makes sense to me. Others pointed out the look his Mom had when he was captured which I can see. It definitely looks more like a look of, “Not again” than a “Oh no, not my son.” Plus if her son was being captured I would think she’d have a different reaction, more anger and defensive, but she appears more hesitant like she’s seen this happen before and knows there’s no way out. Another thing I remember is when Spirit was first leaving to go investigate that night his Mom definitely seemed nervous trying to stop him. Like you said this isn’t the first time he’s wandered off on his own, she definitely knew something it seemed like. I think even if it wasn’t his father, his Mom had definitely seen a case like this before and knew it wasn’t going to end well.
Fun fact to anyone who didn’t know: this movie was actually based off of a little book series! Except it was more about Esperanza and her blood line (Spirit’s mom). In one of the books, she gets separated from her herd along with another stallion, who later became her mate and the father to Spirit. His name was Strider, and he was a pure black stallion. I haven’t read the book yet, but that’s what I know from research lol My guess is that Strider died of old age or just simply moved on to another herd (that’s probably unlikely)
@@abegail1607 Spirit of the West I think. I’m planning to read it too, heard about it like a month or two ago. I loved this movie when I was little and still do so after watching it thousands of times it’s pretty exciting to find out that there are books
Spirit's father tried to be like YOU PICKED THE WRONG HOUSE FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL but Spirit is like I'm not the one who picked the Wrong house YOU PICKED THE WRONG HOUSE FOOOOOOOOOOOOL
I loved this movie when I was little and watched it a million times, I rewatched it earlier this month, and the scene where we all thought Rain died still makes me cry:( I always figured he was taken, died, or got booted out by another stallion who took over the herd Spirit's Mom was in. That's kinda how it goes with wild herds.
as a non-american who goes there on vacation too much, spirit stallion of the cimarron is the best most american movie i know. there are movies which are more american but spirit is the one that does it the best acknowledging that it's past is super dark and avoiding actually talking too much about it because "nope, this is a story about a horse, also the u.s.a. are still evil" is just genius, the movie even has an eagle and extremely american themes about freedom but when a horse wants it it's so much better than americans wanting it and forgetting who they took it from. also it's one of the only horse ccentered movies who acknowledges horses aren't put on this earth so humans can sit on them which really more movies should do, it's such a sin that the netflix series completely forgot what the original movie was about and then shitted all over it's legacy please burn it with fire... also just, that ending when you know that this isn't quite alternate history so he won but his herd will still have to face the humans someday... it's beautiful in a way that is near impossible to capture on purpose, if it was even on purpose at all... such a shame the netflix show also crushed that beauty mildly traumatising me. i suppose spirit stallion of the cimarron was just too good for this world to not be desecrated like that
Oh yeah, spirit is easily one of my all time favorites when it comes to kids animated movies. I always hoped they would make a sequel and I’m still hopeful we will one day. I even bought the soundtrack. The songs and music from this movie is incredible.
Thank you goggle: spirts dad :Strider: Spirit's father, a pure black stallion that was the former leader of the Cimarron herd, Spirit succeeded him. He was later on captured and put in captivity and died from not being used to it. ... He runs into Spirit a few times and eventually concedes in defeat that at least one horse will remain wild and free.
i don’t know anyone in the UK that has watched this movie and love it as much as i do. i was literally OBSESSED with it. i watched it every weekend. i feel like this movie wasn’t talked about enough, like i’m shocked they made a tv show.

This is bringing my childhood back up! I remember seeing this movie in theaters and mcdonald had a toy to match the theme! I guess in a way Strider just yeeted out of existance.
I love this movie but I don't like the Netflix version in my opinion they took everything that the movie was about and killed it harder then fangs babies
I love spirit so much its literally one of my most favorite movies i've been saying that for so long, I remember my mom told me when the movie first came out and she had went and bought it and told me I seriously watched the movie over 5 times and didn't get up AT ALL no joke, I am so happy you made videos about it!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU no I really really wanna watch the movie
When Spirit said "like my father before me" he may have meant he became a leader like his father. I have two theories and each one are from two different series. Theory 1 is that his father may have been alive and watching the herd but at a distance like Bambi's father. Theory 2 is that his father died either before he was born or while he was young, and a new leader led the herd before Spirit was old enough and became the next leader. Either way, we do know for a fact his father was a leader before him and later died.
when i watched Spirit i listioned to some behind the sences too. the crew mentioned that originally thay were planing on having Spirit fight another Stallion (his papa maybe?) but desided on a puma instead.
Hi alteori Im a long time fan that kinda fell off but never unsubscribed (been here since maybe when you made the first videos on Jurassic park) and this movie is one of my all time favorite movies because i grew up with it and i recently watch it again before you made your first video about spirit and i was tearing up just watching it because it brought so many memories. And this movie in a way is bringing me back to your channel so thats cool. one last thing thanks for making the darbie videos i love the series so much to the point i would read it in class which is something i have never done in my life for any book or thing i have to read so thanks!❤️
Simple, his dad kicked him out of his family band.... that's what they do... This is a movie that got me into horses, and when I started being horseman, I realized how inaccurate it is. I love my horses very much, I have a mare and a gelding. Stallions take experienced handlers. Young males DO NOT STAY WITH THEIR FAMILIES, they usually even leave on their own. Please do not get equine knowledge from a fandom. That fandom heavily romanticizes horses and they do not know much if anything about horse behavior, handling, and husbandry. The horseman inside me is cringing at these people, they are clueless.... UGH i...i...I can't. I can't with these people. This fandom and movie are not a good place to learn about horses. There are real channels dedicated to it. There are channels that explain mustang behavior. Why base all equine knowledge off of a inaccurate movie, this is coming from a horse owner and an equine studies student. I can confidently say I am more qualified to answer these question than a freaking fandom.
@@SakuraStallion his mother wouldnt have gone with him, that's what I'm trying to get through you guys heads. Wild horses don't join bands together unless they're mating. If shes in his band, hes mating with her and making babies with her. That isnt good, and not accurate, wild horses are pretty good at avoiding inbreeding because of how they operate. As a young horse he would've been in a bachlor herd, NOT HIS OWN FAMILY HERD. Mothers kick their sons and daughters out, and if they dont go, the stallion will get them. Sorry I love this movie as much as anyone else. But do not get horse knowledge from it. He wouldnt have been in a band with his mother PERIOD. He would've instinctively sought his own mares, not his fathers... Seriously go look up Think Like a Horse's wild horse videos, look up people Monty Roberts, look up Cloud the Wild Stallion foundation on youtube. There are whole ass 4 hour long documentaries about how wild horses work, there is no excuse for people to be basing all equine knowledge off of a cartoon and its fandom...
@@SakuraStallion seriously, look up the Cloud the Wild Stalkion Foundation on YT if you wanna learn about wild horses. Spirit and its fandom are the bane of the equine community.
@@SakuraStallion if you really wanna learn about horses you dont have to go to school like I am, there are plenty of tools to learn about them. Plenty of horseman you can watch

God- Omg This film was my favourite movie growing up. I was a horse boy ngl I brought this movie with me everywhere I went that I knew had a dvd player. So- Im so darn happy to see someone make a video on this underrated movie from my childhood
Spirit was amazing. I watched it so many times I know all the songs off by heart. Sound the Bugle always made me cry. And baby Spirit was so freaking cute! I actually owned the dvd, and I followed the drawing tutorial for Spirit 🤣. Thank you for reminding me of this jewel of a movie!
This movie has a special place in my heart, it’s the first movie I saw in the movie theaters with my mom. I was like 3 or 4 at the time. Tbh I remember really just enjoying it, the sound track blew me out the water. One of the first movies I can really remember having to force myself to focus and understand the scenes. I come back to it every few years honestly just reminisce being kid. 23 now so give it like 15 more years and when I have kids definitely will show them this movie too 😊
Aww. Did you see my comment about Strider from the other video? ❤ I love how Spirit is still getting attention so many years later, too. It's almost on the same level of happiness I have about Avatar: The Last Airbender's attention. :')
I mean who doesn't love this movie, it's a very beautiful and well made film about a horse and his epic journey in the wild west its frickin awesome dude.
Spirit:Stallion Of The Cimmaron is my favorite movie!I got mad when they made Spirit:Riding Free, I personally think its his son, why? 1:Where is the rest of the herd? 2:Spirit does NOT have a blaze 3:After Lucky got on Spirit, Wouldn't he have put up a small fight? 4:Wheres the camp with the Colonel? 5:How long has it been since the train incident? The first episode literally started on a train ride.It takes almost a few years for an entire train way to be built. 6:He was completely comfortable with the other people being around almost immediately 7:Boomerang is a male, First male we have seen Spirit interact with and there was no tension? 8: Surprised he did not flirt with Chicalinda and Mystery Fun Spirit Fact:On the previous Spirit video before this, that Bay colored horse behind the foals was Alma Fun Disney Fact: The Tramp from Lady and the Tramp was based off of a female dog that one of the movie producers actualpy had at the time
Spirit was my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE movie as a kid!!! I literally watched it religiously!!! Like everyday as a kid!!! And I just recently watched it again as an adult and guess what? STILL LOVE IT!!!
OMG I HAVE THIS *WHOLE* SERIES 😭😭😭 my kindergarten horse-obsessed ass made my poor mom buy them all (AND the soundtrack on CD smh) - the series is called ‘Spirit of the West’, and there are four books, one is an adaptation of the movie and the other three pertain to Spirit’s parents/relatives. I don’t know how you define canon exactly, but at the front of each book it says that the use of these characters is licensed to the publishing company by Dreamworks - does that count?
🐎Cool vid Alteori! All though I may be late watching this video, the good thing is "Here I Am". U should do a Spirit Stallion of the cimarron POV for Rain.😀
I have some of the book series. They were advertised and sold here along side all the official merch for Spirit. I'd have to find the book again, but as I understand it the books were made after the movie. The movie was an original story and after it took off, the books were commissioned to help expand that story and the universe of the franchise. I do believe the books even have a synopsis or something written in them explaining that they were based off of the movie and they did have dream works copyright if I recall. So as far as I am remembering, they were very much official.
Spirit was literally one of my faves as a kid! The movie was so emotional I actually remembered crying during the scene where spirit is captured and rode on.
Always be happy. To be honest, I didn't know there's book about Spirit, that's interesting and cool. Great "Alteori theory", of what to Spirit's father. Anyway, another great video, Alteori, I like it, see you in the next one.
Ahoyhoy There, Fellow RU-vidrino! Why not get the book? The movie was made in 2002 so if the book was before that then that's solid evidence about Strider.also , I know every song including the end credit songs to Stallion of the Cimmaron. I even have the Breyer REALISTIC Kiger Mustang Spirit Model, a large Spirit Plush, and one of the early Slip-Cover VHS releases of the film
"Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron" was and will always be not only one of my All-Time Favorite Animated Films but also One of the Most Important Films in my childhood: -First film I ever saw at the LA Cinerama Dome -I think this was the first animated film I had ever seen where the protagonist didn't speak (not including the narration) -It introduced me to Matt Damon. Yes. I knew about him from this film BEFORE "The Bourne Identity" -It was my introduction to Hans Zimmer (who remains one of my favorite composers) & Bryan Adams -It was one of the first films that really showed me how important music can be to telling a story in movies (since Spirit doesn't speak and the music does a lot of the talking for him) -And the soundtrack was one of the first CDs I ever got
