The technology is Star Wars the Old Republic is ridiculous. For an ancient precursor to the Republic and Empire we know in the films, it seems way to advanced, so what happened? That is the question I answer in this video.

The Romans back in the old age, after their collapse, forgot how to make concrete. Literally, forgot the formula. This is just a real life history example of what you talked about, science and technology being lost and devolving due to conflict, war and eventual collapse of a civilization.
@notgonnapay

Yeah this is a really good explanation on why technology regressed in the Star Wars Universe. Imagine living in or near Rome in the Dark Ages though...living near the Colosseum and knowing that there was this great civilization which came before your society, but was far more advanced than you were at the time. It must've been quite a sobering time to live in.

Not to mention the gigantic knock back to science and arts when the library of Alexandria burned down. For example the scientists of Alexandria built steam engines almost 2000 years before people started using them again, for that whole period the tech was just forgotten.

Another example of technological regression would be ancient Egypt. After reaching their pinnacle of pyramid building with the Great Pyramids (around 2700 BC), there was a gradual decline in both the size and quality of pyramids thereafter. Many factors could account for this (civil war, outside invasion, famine, shifting values, etc).
@thedemonhater7748
@thedemonhater7748 4 года назад
Jason L the practicality of pyramids was actual the main culprit behind it. Hiring thousands of men, housing them and feeding them, gathering materials and paying the laborers was super expensive.

But in SWTOR the tech is bulky, well more-so than the prequel era. And designs are more complex. That means in the prequel era had more simple and compact designs, which points to better technology.

(Necropost alert lmao) Bear in mind, in both KOTOR games (not sure about SWTOR, never played it) people had readily available personal shield modules which could resist a few dedicated hits from a lightsaber, a volley of blaster fire or even regular kinetic damage from a melee weapon. There was also personal cloaking/stealth tech, cheap enough that a rudimentary model was found in a mining station. That kind of gear is nowhere to be found in the movie era, outside of some super-advanced and secretive weapons projects of the Galactic Empire.

@@nyxortheultimate9364 SWTOR has a galactic scale AI-controlled fleet directly answerable to a planet in the Unknown Region, a canon that obliterates entire sections of the aforementioned fleet with a single shot that somehow emanates a energy for chain reactions, personal medical packs that could sustain an individual in combating multiple Force-users with only a rifle and without Force powers, superweapons that could supercharge a planet's upper armosphere into what is essentially an ion canon; vibrate and ultimately shatter planets; SD-sized miniature DS superlasers etc.

They lost a lot of tech because of the constant war. Over a 1000 years of war. A lot of tech got lost in the bloody fighting. Star Wars also had a thing with technological stagnation as well. Technology stopped during the warfare, and regresses backward, and many things are lost, such as that cluster of planets that left the republic. All in all because of that galactic war infrastructure collapsed as well as stagnation during the dark era is why so many planets were lost and technology also regressed as the Republic began to fall inward if not completely collapse. Basically what happened to the Rakata.

technology didn't stop progressing. infrastructure couldn't be maintained, so their was a shift in technological development. less large projects and more small project type stuff. you didn't have aqueducts and public baths with running water, but you had better central heating and wells. you didn't have a trade network that could bring perishable food from across the world before it spoiled, but you did have better plows to cultivate more land. textiles technology was better, better glassmaking, and better exploration tools. military technology also advance a fair amount as well. the dark ages were dark for the people at the top and the bottom, but for the people in the middle things were better than before with more social mobility, and a higher standard of living. the closest we came to truly moving backwards technologically was the spread of the mongol empire. they eliminated several civilizations enough to set back the technology and culture of that culture, though they did adopt what they felt was worthwhile and created a create fusion of technology which lead to some impressive growth, and the stability they brought resulted in significant progress in a short amount of time. some of the older civilizations may have moved backwards when an entire region was controlled by a highly corrupt regime and there wasn't enough contact with outsiders to ensure cross cultural exchange. for this to hold true for star wars it would need a period of time in which everything was controlled by a single totalitarian regime, and that regime wiped out those that tried to leave it, and it would have to have control for an extended period of time.

to be fair the russan reformation pretty much De militarized the republic, there was really no need to improve current weaponry if there was new threat, if a turbolaser does its job good then why change it? Smaller security forces and old drednoughts did the job just fine, no need for more advanced tech or a larger military force.

Very fascinating. I was of the mind that the star wars universe had simply reached the apex of technology by SWTOR amd aside from ships becoming more powerful, there wasn't much change design wise. For instance, the massive warships the sith empire use in SWTOR use dozens of heavy laser canons as their main source weapons. But by the clone war, heavy laser cannons are merely support guns for close range ship to ship combat and turbolasers are the main source of weapons instead. Another example would be the republics hammerhead cruiser in SWTOR. It's armorment is 2 turbolasers and 8 heavy laser canons and some point defence guns. But in the clone war, the banking clan frigates, the weakest ships in the separatist armada, little more than heavy support craft, have over 20 turbo lasers and 2 massive heavy turbolasers. I never thought of it being technological regression instead of technology stagnating

The Senate is a large ruling body, but it's more the Force itself that causes Jedi to zealously throw themselves at Sith - balance in the Force, at least by the view of the Prophecy of the Chosen One, is the extermination of ALL Sith, no exceptions. The only way a Sith can escape this is by fully submitting and being redeemed as a Jedi, though that option should be presented more often. Kreia was correct, at the end of the day. Just think about how many people - Jedi, Sith or anyone else - died to make sure Bane and his philosophy died; Sidious alone took so many sacrifices...

One of my biggest issues with TOR is how similar it looks to the movies, in regards to the weapons, the armor and uniforms, and the ship design. I wish they took their inspiration from KOTOR instead. Republic armor and ships, Sith uniforms and ships, they all liked unique within the SW universe and looked awesome. Now I understand that the Sith Empire in TOR is different than the Sith Empire in KOTOR, but they could've at least evolved the design of the Republic from KOTOR for TOR.

I don't remember where, but it's mentioned that the Kaminoans designed the equipment of the Clone Troopers based on, at least visually, equipment used by the old military the Republic used to have, well before TOR was even announced. So the Trooper designs actually make sense.

Shen Wei ~ I hear you. I've read that technology had not truly advanced far for well over a thousand years before the prequels. Its like their culture technologically plateaued. For instance there hadn't been any major advancement in infantry weapons since they ditched back pack power supplies. This would be rather like someone still using AK-47's 1,000 years from now. Its a good weapon, but, you'd think the technology would have moved on. Usually when weapons advance, armor advances as well, then weapons have to advance to overcome the armor. And so on. When TOR has armor and weapons that haven't really changed in 1,000 years...something is wrong. And when the successors (the Empire and Rebel Alliance) are still using that same technology a thousand years after that.... Further evidence of technological regression was that they used to be able to field planet killer weapons on a Star Destroyer class vessel. Now they need something the size of a moon to do the same job. Things are definitely going downhill long ago in a galaxy far far away...
@Grizabeebles
@Grizabeebles 7 лет назад
Part of me always put it down to the Republic being a post-singularity society. If there are no new technologies to discover, all that would happen would be and endless design war of optimization and counter-optimization. Take the blaster as a standard infantry weapon. The thing packs the punch of an anti-tank rifle, has a medium rate of fire and runs on standardized tool batteries and a canister of compressed gas. Yet an M-16 is a _much_ better infantry combat weapon because its supersonic projectile gives it dozens of times more effective range. Blasters would be at a severe disadvantage to earthly armies. However, the blaster is more effective on inorganic targets than earthly bullets and the ready access to air support and transport available to a space-faring civilization means troops can avoid engaging from extreme range using combined-arms tactics. Within the greater galaxy the blaster is a pretty reliable main armament for dealing with most threats. One can also look at the Imperial efforts to create TIE variants that match the capabilities of various Rebel fighters. The issue is never really whether or not it can be done but _how much building it will cost._ And when one is equipping tens of millions of soldiers, cost is already the biggest issue.

Drastic loss of pop happens only after longer periods (or when you are losing) => 30 years war and Germany during WW2. Ok to easily explain the whole valkorian situation it goes along the lines of this: During his reign of the sith empire ( before they re emerged in the galaxy) vitiate/valkorian/tenebrae realized that the south empire was an inefficient system and such that wasn't going to work with this knowledge, servants, and his immense power in the force he and his servants performed a ritual in which they conjured the emperor a second physical body so that no one could realize it was him now with his servants he acquired a ship that allowed him to explore the unknown regions of the galaxy there he discovered the eternal fleet and zakuul he then spent most of his time conquering and then ruling zakuul making it great ( again) so great that he named it " The Eternal Empire" for he himself was immortal which explains why as it is stated multiple times in the game swtor the emperor has been all but silent for centuries even during the sith empire's war with the republic though still hungry for power he wished to wipe the galaxy of the republic and empire by preforming a ritual that would actually make him so powerful and immortal he could snap his fingers together and anyone would be dead this would also allow him to expand the eternal empire across multiple galaxies but unfortunately for him the Jedi knight as it is known not only stopped him but also injured him significantly by destroying one of his physical bodies he then spent weeks trying to heal which explains why as Senya states that valkorian suddenly became distant with his family but the process of healing was sped up significantly when revan reborn started doing a ritual that would have given the emperor a physical body and although revan failed in doing the ritual the mass amounts of death and such that occurred during the ritual gave the emperor some of his strength back he then decided to perform the same ritual he once used the originally made him immortal and strong in the first place but what was different back then was that the emperor was weaker back then but during Ziost he was strong enough to perform the ritual by himself and as we know he succeeded that time but instead of just trying to do the same thing as before ( as in just doing mass amounts of rituals again) he decided to use his eternal empire to try and conquer the galaxy he first used his forces to do proxy battles against the republic and empire which would weaken them for example their invasion of Korriban and well the rest can be figured out by y'all also if you're wondering why he still decided to use his with empire to invade the republic its mainly because he was still angered by the republic for the desolation or whatever of the previous sith empire he also promised the people of the sith empire that they would have their revenge against the republic.

(The words in ALL CAPITALS are to emphasize my point ) You are looking at military technology, both the Old Republic and the Sith Empire were in a constant state of battle or preparing for one that pushed their technology forward. On the other hand when we get to the prequels we have seen a THOUSAND years of peace. Basically there was no need for advances to be made to military technology because there has been no GALACTIC SCALE war. Obi-Wan himself in the A New Hope the for over a thousand generations the Jedi kept the peace. Look for Tarsus Valorum who enacts the Ruusan Reformations which turns the Jedi into the Order we know today, as Mace Windu puts it "We are keepers of the peace, not soldiers". This is because of the Ruusan Reformations which causes the following things to happen 1) The military of the Republic including all Naval, Ground and Fighter forces are disbanded. 2) To help prevent a Sith Resurgence the training of all Jedi is centered on Coruscant and Jedi are trained from birth (hence why Anakin is considered too old) 3) The Jedi will remove all militaristic things from the Order such as their battle armor, renounced their miltairy ranks, removed the Minister of Defence position and placed themselves under the supervision of the Chancellor and Judicial department. With something like the Ruusan Reformations it is not good for military development or research so do not expect to see a lot of advancement in military technology or surprised is you see a bit of a back slide. (After all peace with no visible enemies is never good for Military RnD)

The answer is quite simple, in a galaxy where lightspeed is more then 25000 years in usage, most technologies are already made into its final forms and used and reused and reused non stop. So nothing really bigger or better, just different. They've already reached their pinacles of technology.

Maybe not the pinnacle but i could imagine that technology advancement get slower and slower the more advanced it becomes. This also means that investing in science is less and less profitable from an economic standpoint because at some point it might take a whole generation or more to improve something by jet another 1% (or less likely invent something new). EDIT: Plus at some Point you will just face the physical limits you can go with a technology. Take our own transistor technology for example. We reaching the Point of maximum Processing power because building even smaller Transistors is impossible because of quantum tunneling.

This is very very accurate and organized analysis. We can always see this happening. After the fall of Roman Republic and Han Empire, they lost a lot of their technologies. Same thing goes for Galactic Republic.

To be fair, in regards to the Paecian Empire's short lifespan, the North Sea Empire (also known as the Anglo-Scandinavian Empire) ruled from England and stretched to Norway, Denmark, and parts of Sweden and collapsed almost immediately after its first and only ruler, King Cnut the Great, died seven years after its founding!

The reason why the Old republic era’s technology and the Clone Wars/prequel’s technology looks way more advanced compared to the originals is because the original films were made back in the 70s and 80s so people back then had different concept designs on advanced technology. It’s just the way how people view advance technology or any sci fi design was different back then.

Once more the Sith will rule the galaxy and we shall have peace... Spoilers: Sith Empire wins, but well... A House divided cannot stand :P Sith built temples on Coruscant (New Canon apparently) probably evidence of victory? My Head canon: Empire and Republic start hammering eachother with Super weapons and whatever else they can get their hands on. Superweapon Examples: Darth Marrs Isotope 5 weapons. Darth Malgus' Stealth Armada. Darth Jadus scavenged eradicators (Imperial Agent forced him into exile). Darth Nox (Imperious / Occulus / etc) prototypes. Darth Acinas' whatever the hell she is planning. Jace Malcom is dead lol Republic is on the run after losing Coruscant and many of their champions. As a result they probably begin making suicide runs on key Sith Imperial worlds, destroying vital infrastructure, which forces the Empire to return to a defensive stance. Resulting in another stalemate... The two factions try finding allies as worlds continuously change hands or go neutral. The Republic becomes something identical to the Rebel Alliance for a period of time but still retains a decent power base because "Sith are assholes". Empire consolidates itself but suffers attacks from occupied citizens. Fortunately for them there are Aliens filling their ranks to replace lost manpower. The Throne changes hands numerous times. Empire totally collapses at some point...

Agree. Explains why the prequel 'Republic' goes around speaking in Imperial accents, having solders (and I'm talking real soldiers like the Senate Guards, not clones) that look badass and flying in ships (even pre-Clone War, it's even more blatant after) straight out of the Dromund Kass Shipyard. I'd say the Empire doesn't truly collapse but infighting decentralizes it. As the Army of Light whittles down the Sith numbers, Imperial citizens with military support revolt (Darth Bane strikes at this point). Chancellor Valorum (the original) then gathers the Jedi, Core Worlds and Imperial leadership together and get everyone to help pick up the pieces. Republic ideals winout on the government side of things but it's the former Empire that holds most of the military, economic and cultural power in the galaxy.
@raw6668
@raw6668 7 лет назад
I think another reason was the long area of peace after the dissolving of the Republic Military and Navy. The thinking is that is no longer afforable to have the latest military technology available. Since only the Galactic Government would be able to afford to buy the latest warship, and weapons in mass enough number to cover cost and earn a profit. That when they are no longer buying we start to see a degradation due to having to make less advance technology to make a profit. It also explain the sudden update of technology by the Star Wars movie era for they never truly lost the technology, it just left in archives as they no longer are needed and was dusted off as the Seperatist, Republic, Empire, New Republic, First Order and est. needed a large powerful fleets again. It also why common technology like cloaking technology, personal sheilds, and est. are still missing or rate technology for the companies collapse during the wars describe and no one felt a need to go back to that technology until the wars started for they were just too expensive to make.

This has been very enlightening video as i had always thought war and events would caused the technology being lost and stagnated. Alot of people say Clone war and Galactic Civil War era technology and weapons are at its apex, but i do not believe that since we see in kotor/swtor games, comics, and novels that the republic during revan and vitaites time were far more advanced. Then you have that eternal empire. Would love to see comparison video of technology and weapons between kotor/swtoro era and clone war and galactic civil war era.

You might have mentioned that in order for the Sith Emperor to become Valkorion after being replenished on Yavin 4 by Revan unknowingly the emperor's essence begins a hunt for a planet to consume and all life on it to allow him to possess another form aka Valkorion you must of overlooked what happened to Ziost.
@BeukendaalMason
@BeukendaalMason 7 лет назад
Actually I disagree with that. Vitiate had been Valkorian for a long time. It is why he had little influence on the Sith Empire for so long, he was spending his time in Zakuul as Valkorian and only occasionally returning to the Sith Empire. I believe the reason why Vitiate/Valkorian destroyed Ziost was probably to replenish his strength, reassert his power, and get revenge on the Sith who had "betrayed" him.

Finally someone seems to get it. He has always been using multiple bodies and doing so means that for whichever empire he was at the time the other would've have to be left without much of his presence. We know that he only appear as the voice to issue decrees at times leaving the hand to do the rest and the dark council to do their own thing since the last time revan tried to kill him with the exile but senya also said after awhile when arcan and thexan was growing up he would retreat into seclusion ignoring them all. This was the timeline of the cold war and thus the game. He most likely were in a coma like state as valkorian before his return after Yavin IV and Ziost. Well that's what I got from playing the game and reading the stories.

@BeukendaalMason 7 лет назад
Thank you. I was wondering if at some point in KOTFE or KOTET Vitiate/Valkorian would reveal his original body but I have a feeling that it perished over the time. I would love to see a story continuation with the Emperor's Children getting "revenge" on the Empire, Republic, and the Alliance with the specter of the Emperor returning (used as a ruse to lure everyone into a trap).

I knew a senior in my freshman year of highschool who decided to fill my head with Star Wars lore one day as we rode the bus home. Where he got his information from I have no idea. But this was a few years before the release of episode I. He told me how Anakin died in a volcano. Sounds a lot like Mustafar. He told me told me about a droid rebellion. But I thought he mentioned R2D2. He told me how Yoda knew so much about the dark side was because he studied it. He told me about Luke going to the dark side to trick the cloned Palpatine but Luke actually went too far and became so powerful he could destroy a planet or a star I'm not sure which. That Han had to come and save Luke and that Han used Luke's lightsaber to cut through some doors. I'm probably forgetting to mention some other things he told me. But I still have no idea where he learned what he was telling me then. But much of what he told me seems to actually have happened even if it is a slight variation or others things are speculated to have happened. I began reading the books at the start of the Vong wars and just went forward from there. Anything that took place before than that wasn't in the movies I've only heard tell of. Except the Bane book. I read those and really hated them. The read too similar to World of Warcraft books at the time and I didn't like the idea of the force being so similar to magic. I did however love the books from the Vong on up. I think I didn't get around to reading the last book or couple of books before it all got erased from canon. I never got into any of the games or comics for Star Wars either so Knights of the Old Republic I only know of from videos online.

Let's say everything is canon, Then what (might)happend to Zakuul or Iokath, Eternal Empire,... of SWTOR, they can't just vanish in a black hole or something or the Yuuzhong Vong defeating them in a secret-isolated war. I would understand that the outlander would want nothing to do anymore in the Core Wolds. But what happend to those super-powers. It looks like in the movie too that the Republic was pretty poor After all those wars. They couldn't have and maintain a personal Military and Fleet and had to rely on a Cheap-alternative like the Cloners on Kamino. And suddenly palpatine transforms into Sidious and they have the biggest military force ever, second to the Eternal Empire. They retired the clones and replaced them with actual people, Recolorizing, Re-armoring, Re-shape their warships, Build totally new Weaponry, Vehicles,... Where did all that credits come from. When i looked into it, it is like the galaxy map in "Attack of the clones" is verry limited. Wild Space ain't on it, The Seat of the Empire regions is like devided into sections i think. Like the History is totally forbidden knowledge and must be locked away. The outlander's (including my character and many others) actions have no results. All it did was save the galaxy so the Republic and Empire could continue fighting their territorial dispute and disagreeing defirences.

it's actually a lot like the BattleTech universe. the Star League 300 years previous to the time most of the various games in that universe happen had some crazy technology, but due to a coup and the subsequent quashing of said coup, infighting between the various factions for those three centuries utterly screwed up available tech to the point that some 31st Century tech was actually worse than 20th century, just due to the amount of factories, labs, and such that'd been blown away by wars.

The Book of Sith implies that it was during Vitiate's reign, when the Sith literally ruled half the galaxy and forced the Republic to vassalage. It says Palpatine admired Vitiate and modeled his empire after his, which makes sense given the similarities we see. I guess there really was never a time when the Sith ruled ALL of the galaxy, but that makes sense because a) Obi-Wan says the Republic survived 25,000 years and b) it makes Sidious' achievement unique.

I remember reading that technology had become stagnant for well over a millenium due to politics etc in the republic, which is why the empire (not visually) saw massive leaps, due to imperial control and palpatine's desire to explore the unknown regions, massive leaps happened. Whether this is still canon or not I have no idea. Either way this would make sense why technology looks so similar to prequel era.

Bioware made only Kotor 3,000 years in the past so they could have free reign over the story since nobody at lucasarts really cared about what happened back then. It's also possible that some of the advanced technology would become obsolete. For example, the personal shields you use in KOTOR went out of use because of improved blaster technology. Thus they had to build better ones, which were too expensive to build. They also caused radiation and magnetic fields that harmed sentient beings, which was why the CIS put them on droids.

The whole galactic situation technology wise bears a great resemblance to the Battle Tech(mechwarrior) universe, where decades to centuries of war reduced the overall technology level of the galaxy to levels well below what had been the previous standard (Star League Era). The cause of this is that nuclear weapons were thrown around like confetti during the succession wars.
