I faced the same issue with my arowana. Actually the tail splits and cuts due to the arowana biting the tail itself. And then secondary bacterial infection will occur. I cured it quite easily by treating with paracidol for 2 days and bactonil for the next 3 days.
Always keep a hospital tank for fish treatment. Hospital tank is usually smaller then your main tank. And it is quite easy to treat fish as you can control all the parameters easily in that tank plus it would require much less medicine as compared to main tank. In the mean time you can treat your main tank with PP to get rid of all unwanted bacteria. And change the tank water completely after treating the main tank. I hope this helps. Which kind of bacterial infection can be treated with melafix as its not mentioned anywhere and it is not applicable for broad range of bacterial infection.. actually I have also faced fin rot issue in my fancy goldfish but its almost 1 month over, its not cured till now...pls suggest something??
Your arowana was already giving symptoms of tail biting, look at the video when it was at the owners place , after he fed the arowana, it started turning around itself to bite its tail
Whenever you buy some fish just remember to always quarantine them first with General aid and that blue medicine for about 14 days then you should add it in your main aquarium then these sort of problems will not occur and your fish will remain healthy. Just remember quarantine for 14 days atleast and use medicines
